Hi everyone! I just wanted to show you a head I was asked to root by Secrist. It is supposed to go to Hollywood!
I don't know why it doesn't have any paint on the outside of it but it does have the inner wash. It was suppose to be similar to the one on their website of Kaylee. Sparse hair and newbornish look.
I used the Angelic Touch mohair that Secrist carries and it was the light brown color. I carefully washed it with Johnson's baby shampoo as I do all my babies, then used a spray on conditioner and curl activator. Towel dried it, combed carefully (as I did not glue the hair inside), then cut and styled it. To get that "not cut" look I used a razor comb. It makes the ends look like they just grew like that naturally and doesn't have that blunt cut look. I got the razor comb at my local beauty supply.
Normally I would glue the hair inside the head but I didn't know if they were going to paint it or what as I wasn't told.

Oh My Goodness Pat that head is WONDERFUL!!!!! Oh if I only could root half as good as that I would be greatful. Did i read that right you was all your mohair when you get it? Do you wash or before or after you root in on the head? I'm taking it you wash it after you root it because you had to be careful with it because it wasn't glued. Now if it wasn't winter and I would freeze camped out in your back yard HA! HA! I would come and beg for rooting classes . I'll have to go and buy me a razor comb. Agin a wonderful job Pat. Linda
Thanks so much Linda *blush* I usually like to take a week to root but it was a rush job as they needed it back this week. I do know not to wear a sweater when rooting as it tends to remove some of the hairs that I rooted while turning and rooting other areas :( and since I didn't get to glue the inside I had to re-root a few areas more than once (placing the needle tip into the existing holes to redo).
I only wash the hair after rooting otherwise it gets to be a mess. And not until the internal glue is dry. Use coolish to warm (never hot) water to wash hair or it will frizz or felt (matte), no scrubbing, just basically running the shampoo lightly through all the hair. Then pat or squish with a towel, again, not rubbing. With mohair you always have to be careful not to be rough or it will felt. I usually rub the shampoo in my palm first instead of applying it directly to the hair. Combing... always start on the ends and work your way up to the top. Less chance of pulling it out or making fuzz. Unless you are rooting and using a brush like Stephanie shows in the rooting DVD, you should be gentle with the hair, especially if it's wet or damp. I am thinking of making some kind of card on hair care to send with my babies.
So, you think you might freeze in my backyard? It's only frozen tundra hahaha. I got a heater you can plug in hehehe! Ya, those razor combs are great! Got mine at Sally beauty supply but most any one should have them. Mine is silver and looks like one of those old straight razors, it folds in half.
Looks great, someone probably doesn't like rooting and just wants to paint the kit, but wouldn't you think they would send it back after it was finished. XXXXX June.
Ok, so here is another head Secrist had me root. This one isn't painted either, going to the same place, not even the internal wash this time. I did put my biz card inside stating that the head was rooted by me.
This was a larger head than the last one. This is a 22" Petunia. She/he was rooted with the English mohair. I didn't care for it at first, as I have stated in one of the rooting posts, but I figured out how to work with it. I also didn't glue the hair inside because I am presuming that it will be painted at some point. It would be nice if they'd send me a head that was painted so the hair would look better on it than on a blank with eyeballs rofl. :D
The first few pics are of his hair wet (conditioned) and the others are when the hair was mostly dry.
Thanks everyone! It took me since Thurs to root this head. I'm slow but steady. And some areas I had to re-root because when I brush/comb the hair some came back out as I can't glue it. I don't know what they are going to do with it and the glue can't go in the oven. So it's just rooted, that's all.
So now we'll see if Secrist wants me to root any more.
I just had to come on and post about this new news!!! I just got an e-mail from the office from Joanna Secrist.... she said that my baby heads are to be in a scene on a tv soap opera called "The Young and the Restless"!! OMG! Maybe I'll be a famous rooter! She said she thought the heads/babies were going to be in a "sauna" scene! Ok, so first... who would take babies in a sauna? Second... who would use unpainted babies with hair? Totally weird but if it gets me jobs... I don't care! I'm sure I'm rooting the heads for way less than they're paying to have them done. Maybe I should contact them on my own? I'm contemplating that at this very moment. Hmmm
