All mohair is not created equal as we have all found out. There are lots of variables in goat care, how and where (climate) the goats are raised, what they eat, etc. Also there are sometimes unique looks that we want to create so this is just a generalization.
Generally, the first and second clippings of kid mohair are supposed to be the finest. The more clippings, the more course the hair. I like the baby fine hair for newborns.

I use both depending on alot of what Linda said, what look I want. I use kid hair first clip on younger babies or on older ones I use it through then some yearling as well. But yearling I like first or second clippings anything more is too coarse.
According to surveys and polls...Slumberland Nursery(Ellen) has the best quality mohair available..seems it's 16 times more popular than Dawn Marie's
I just love all shades of blonde hair..but since I have a difficult time not only doing but seeing the crown/spiral take shape...so I jumped for Baby Brown Kid Mohair...it appears to be a very attractive colour
at $25 for a half ounce and is chosen more often than Dawn's which I usually pay $65 for a half ounce..that's a super deal...

I like the kid mohair but not the very first cut as it's too fine and fly-away for me. I also like the cuts that are done in the Fall versus the Spring.
Polls/surveys are only the opinion of the people who take them... Mohair is subjective, meaning some only like certain kinds, certain places to purchase, certain styles/colors. Some have never tried anyone elses hair so don't know if they'd like it better or not than other brands/places purchased. Some think that if it costs a lot that it has to be good... not entirely so.
Since I figured out how to do the crown/swirl I can even do it with light blonde now. Pretty amazing. Now if I can just master the German no barb needle...!
That is a super deal if the hair is really worth it. Just because it costs more doesn't mean the hair is better than the less expensive stuff. I have some I got really inexpensively and it's wonderful (I should share as I have a large box of it, and some larger bags of the other stuff) and most of mine is raw. Have you thought of buying your hair "raw" and processing it yourself? It's much cheaper that way and you get to condition it yourself!
I also have a 3 ft bag of 3 colors of baby llama hair that is supposed to be simply fabulous! I haven't had the time to clean it yet but I did a tiny batch and used it on one baby. It's nice! Even natural colors so no dye to turn greenish or brassy.
