   Hi Everyone !!!!

Sorry took a while to get back. Been running back and forth to Doc.'s and the hospital, getting ready for surgery. (May 4th). YES Joey and I went shopping!! It was fun . I sat him up in the front sit of the shopping cart just like a baby, I had to take things back to the service disk. The lady looked at first didn't say anything. Then I introduced joey and she had to hold him she couldn't believe it wasn't real and I made him. I walked down though the store and some people would look . One older lady had to see him I let her hold him and couldn't believe I made him. Went to the material department and the two workers keep watching to see if he was going to move. One finally got close enough to really see him and  to see it was a doll. Couldn't believe it. I had a man go by take a look did a double take and had to come back and touch him to see it wasn't real.I saw this older women in the store again and she had a freind with her she had to see Joey and had to hold him too! Boy Joey didn't know what to do with all the attention!!! He was such a good boy I had to buy him a new outfit and we came home after the cashier held him !Then we can home. So ladies get brave and take your babies out!!! I can't wait to do it again!!!

blankstare  That sounds exactly like my experience in Walmart, but have had a couple of people try to run off with them!  LOL  It is fun & like to put mine in a stroller.  Need one of those little newborn carriers that you can attach to the basket & will get one of those as people think you are a very cruel mother & will jump on you if see them laying on something hard...or in a position you would'nt normally lay a baby.  Sometimes I carry a pillow in with me  & put in basket front.  It is fun to take them out to eat.  If you are going to sell them don't take them in outfit you are going to sell them as I have had to redress too many doing this as everybody wants to hold them.  I have a box of baby clothes I use just for taking them out.  Have a great day everyone.  I am 57 today  Ug....my husband said you are 34 today & I said I hope I looked better at 34 than this...LOL  Blessings...

biggrin  Oh, thankyou so much Linda & I get my rooting needles all different places & like Hobbie Lobbie regular felting needles in the heavy guadge, but get the 42 for rooting lashes & fine stuff.  Just hold your hair real thinned out & flat against the head & then poke at angle you want the hair to lay so it won't be sticking straight out & then if you catch too many hairs pull a few out & start in crown making a winding to a circle &the thing I did at first was root too thick & try to root with hair evenly apart about  1/8 of an inch & then you can go back & see if you want to add more here, or there.  Bloomers & Bows has some strong needles & love the little wooden needle holder German on Dolls by sandie & it has a little wooden plug you push in there with the needle on it...turn the head as you root the crown in a little spiral circle & I always paint or draw my hair line so don't get uneven look.  Hope this helps...  Those are Clover Brand felting needles at Hobby Lobby & get heavy gd. as don't break as easy.  I am still working on perfecting mine too & can always use a razor to thin it if too thick & learning to style better now.  The bang areas show the most & always careful there that just 2-3 hairs per plug. Hope that helps...Hugs, Sherri

disbelief  Oh yes there are people like that & I did''nt know it either & kind of makes you feel funny the first time it happens..listion there are some very aggressive people who think it is funny to do something like that & I don't offer to let anybody hold them that is giving me a wierd feeling now.  You know I guess they think if you called security, or something they would think you were nuts having a doll with you & not understand what you are talking about.  LOL Well, you know there are people that steal cars & break into houses & any time you go public with something & all you might run into someone occasionally that is a nut!  I have learned my lesson & I know now.  Had trouble with like an 18 year old girl & she just started saying she was taking my doll & taunting me, but finally just had to take her away from her; you know trying to make a fool of me to get the doll...just warning you about this as was so mad.  You know if I had been embarrased to grab the doll she would have walked with it.

Loved reading about Joey's adventures on his day out with you, Linda.  It sounds like it was fun.  When you finish Josie, maybe you should try it again?

I'm hoping your surgery goes smoothly and you recuperate fast with little or no pain.  If that sounds like a miracle, I guess that's what I'm praying for you to have.   We'll be thinking of you.

Hugs,
Linda

Emily, it would be a fabulous day for a play date!  Sun is shining and temps are just perfect.

I'm trying to work on a toddler doll today, but got sidetracked here in the forum.

Hugs,
Linda

Hi Linda! In deed it is a beautiful for a play date! We're sunny and 75 here perhaps some tea on the patio? aww Finally receiving my supplies. They are trickling in little by little. Yesterday I received my Haily kit and Alina by Adrie Stoete. My goodness is she HUGE!shocked.gif I didn't quite know what to make of her at first lol Then I picked up her legs and arms and thought how beautiful the potential is for this kit. I hope I do a good job on her. She is just so huge! I'm also waiting on Slumber for my mohair. Have you or anyone used this company? Is the mohair as good and it looks in the pics? My paints came in too so now I'm so anxious to begin but want to wait until after finals. Beautiful days like this just inspire me to be creative. Puts ya in a good mood ya knowaww How is it to work on larger kits? I suppose it is easier, I wonder if I will be able to keep consistant with all the parts.

blankstare  Well, that is the only person I have ever met that was that bad, but you know they are apparently out there & just usually a really good time with baby day out, but occasionally any time doing something new & in public can run into something wierd...just makes me be a little causious...same girl gave us a discount on our cleaning where she was working latter; so maybe she felt bad about her behavior.

I get leary about some people holding my babies. I've had to scold many people about picking them up by the arm off the display table at shows. I say "do you pick your baby up by it's arm too?" and they say "well of course not". So I'm back at them saying that they shouldn't pick mine up like that either, as they are art not just a kids doll. They either think I"m the weirdo or they realize for that price they better be nice lol.

no  Now you know they know better than to pick that doll up by the arm...that is the kind of thing that irritates me too!    I would put up a sign that says "Please do not pick up dolls without assistance as are Art dolls & Fragile like a real baby"   I would'nt pick one up without asking anyway...

The really funny thing is that if they want to see one I'm holding, I gently put my hand under the head and one under the back and hand it nicely to them. They just get giddy and go "oooooo, she's handling it just like a real baby. And look... the head even moves like it's real!" Then they're a lot more careful with them. Those that are not, I don't adopt my babies out to!

Hello ladies, I took 3 of my babies to my church meeting, it was about 10 ladies and the Pastor everyone loved them they could'nt  believe that I made them they were saying he has veins, look at her nails they all said that I was talented they were passing them around, they asked me how many I have I told them 8 they want me to bring more next time, one lady has a daugther in texas that wants one so we will see how that goes, if I sale one or not does'nt matter because I don't think they will pay me what they are worth, I will keep them before I sell them for little or nothing, But I enjoyed all the comments they made me feel good, my sister in-law took some of my pics  so that she can show them at her work.

Aren't you glad you took the babies to church, Dee?  I think compliments from people who see the babies in person are so valuable because they are seeing the real thing rather than a photo.  Just try not to sell too cheap because then you might have trouble selling for what your doll is worth in the future.  I hope you get some business!

Oh Dee that is soooo great!!!!! I'm so glad that everything went well at your church. It is also a sticky one with how much to sell them for when it comes to church folks you know....I mean I wouldn't know what to price them at. Family members have expressed interest (EXPRESSED INTEREST) in my babies saying they want one. However, I'm sure that when they find out how much I'll ask for them they will look at me as if I'm crazy. I think they will expect me to practically give them away. The first two, well not so great so I wouldn't ask for much if I were to sell them. But as I get better and they look better, I think it'll be tough with people I see often. But wow, you took three with you? How did you handle them all? aww

Yes Linda I'm glad I took them to church, it really felt good to see the reaction of the ladies even my pastor was amazed, hopefully someone will buy one, I won't sell it if I can't get what I feel it's worth.

I know, people that you are close to want you to practically give them away, lots of interest but no buyers. I have these large canvas bags that I sat them in, my pastor thought that his wife had a real baby in a bag it was so funny.

Well thats great that you took some of them to see the church ladies. I can just hear the wheels turning in their heads... "hmmm, how can I save up enough money to get one of those babies?" they were prob thinking.

Linda is right though. Sell them right, but not too cheap. Family gets deals from me but... there is a limit. And like you said, they do expect a great discount cause they are family. I know.

The large canvas bags are great for babies! People are so surprised when you take baby out of the bag!! hehehe

I made two almost identical reborn babies and decided to take photos of them outside in the natural light. A friend came over with her boyfriend. She asked me if she could hold the baby when she was holding it she came to the realization that the baby she is holding is not breathing and asked me why she wasn't breathing (avatar) I told her I make reborn babies and this is one I had already made. She cracked up laughing( I think she felt a little silly) well as the conversation progressed she asked me to make her one.... I told her how much and she told me that I could make it for free. All the time and money you put into one of these cute little babies is alot of work. So I ended up not making her one because she wanted me to do a freebie.. lol nonope. that's my true story..

That is so true. I gues they just don't realize the time and money that we spend making these little bundles. I try to give family a break as well but I did have a sister in law (ex now)that wanted me to make one for her 9 year old daughter for christmas one year. I was like 2 weeks left before Christmas when she asked. Then when I told her what I'd charge her (which was extremely reasonable) she said it didn't look all that hard and asked where she could get the materials to make it herself.

They really don't... they expect that you going to magically make it finished in less than 2 weeks or so. I want to do a good job and take the time to make sure I am doing it right.. I have yet to sell the baby jacob that I completed back around New years.

disbelief  I don't know if you get this, or not, but I have people who I tell you have to send half of the price of the doll for me to start it & the rest at completion, and some will say they have sent the check & I never get it, and latter say "Oh will have to wait to send til such & such" then they will ask about the progress of the doll, and expect me to make it after I have told them the conditions of the transaction!  They will email me with all kinds of instructions of how they want the doll & all & it is really amusing...well girls I sell them, but about to sell on ebay only & with no deals...LOL  guess we can't be in this for the money!

Usually relatives and friends do not make good customers. They're more like "tire kickers" I'd say. We long-timers in the biz say that: they like the car but they just want to kick the tires, not buy it.
Ya, they think our babies are nice, realistic, and all, and they will hold them forever, but THEY wouldn't pay that much for one, and feel that we should all be giving them away.

Since I became a jeweler, I want to ask my relatives: "if I created a diamond ring, would you want me to give it to you for free cause we're related?" Well, I don't do that with my babies either. You want a discount, fine, you want a freebie, go elsewhere please.

I too take several weeks to make my babies. I never rush them. I have done very few "in a hurry". I just don't work that way. And rooting alone can take me over a week depending on how much hair the baby is to have.

And Tina, I would have told your ex-s.i.l. to go ahead and make one if she thought it was that simple! I have done that with crafters before. My GF walks around the shows with me and says "you could do that!" and I always have to shush her.

So, I don't try to be rude or anything, just let them know how it is. If they don't like it, they can walk...

lol Oh my goodness Sage that is awesome that you took Dakota out! So happy for you. When I finished Margaret, my son asked if, no, my son said "Your gonna sell her right?" I told him I planned to but that I wanted to take her out first. Taking her out was the test, if people think she is real then she is ready for adoption. However, I want to get a car seat first. Because your right, when they look so real and they're not in car seats you can be pulled over. Also, there is alot of construction going on here (recovery projects) so there are policemen/women everywhere. I always drive right by them so they are within a few feet of me seeing into the van easily. Besides, it would suck to do all this hard work and you hit the brakes and, oops there goes baby. She/he'll get dirty, damaged, possibly even cause more problems becoming a projectile as you said. Ooo and imagine if someone witnessed the whole thing, heaven forbid!
Anyhoo, that must have been so cool to take baby out. Maybe next time tell bf you'll get him a beer (or whatever he likes) when you return if he's a good boy. lol

Heck you should not have any problems with this, first of all it's an art form requiring many talents.second of all can they do any better, third is this art can make one some money if done right, fourth this art form is being engulfed, embraced, enjoined around the world, fifth I am a dedicated artist of this unique art-form,etc etc

I am a male artist(reborning baby doll kits) and I carry my babies throughout my neighbor, have shown them to man, woman and child...I can never change what they think about me and the dolls I paint(reborn),I challenge them to try doing one themselves....I've shown them to policemen in my neighborhood whom thought they were amazing creations and that I should not stop creating them.

Okay Ladies I finally took a baby out yesterday. We were invited to a bbq and I thought it the perfect time to take a baby. When my oldest son heard me say I was taking one of them I thought he was going to die! LOL His face turned pale and he was whining saying "Ahhhh ma?  why do you have to bring them?" I told him "why not? How will I know if they are realistic looking if I don't take them out? How will anyone else know what I do if I don't put my work out there?" He just signed and walked away.

So when it was time to go, I put both of them in a cute summer outfit and asked my son (the same who complainedsmile)  which one he thought should go? He chose Thomas! So I got the car seat ready, put his bobo in and off we went. When we got to the house my youngest asked me what was I going to say? I told him I'd tell them I was babysitting my neighbors son. He smiled and nodded his head. I looked and could see the anticipation on all my children's faces wondering what will happen. So...we walked up the porch steps and rang the doorbell. We stood and looked at one another as my sister-in-law answered the door. She welcomed us in, told us everyone was out back, and headed inside. Then she noticed the car seat I was holding and ooooed and ahhhhed and asked who it was. I told her I was sitting my neighbor's baby boy and turned it for her to see. She melted saying how cute he was and oh how he has blonde hair and that he is such a darling. I smiled and said he is cute isn't he. Then she said "oh and he's such a good baby!" I said "yes he is, I can't complain." My sons are standing grinning ear to ear trying not to burst in laughter. Then she stops and says "Wait. Is he one of your dolls?" I laughed and said yes he is! She laughed and laughed and said she remembered seeing the pictures on my fb and couldn't believe how real he looked! Then she said "okay shhhh Daniel (my teen nephew) is coming."

So we turned to head toward the back door but he me us halfway. He asked who the baby was and I told him and he ooooed and ahhhed. Then he touched and wiggled Thomas' little foot and said how cute. (At this point I thought for sure he knew Thom wasn't real but he went on some more!) He was saying awww how tiny he is and then went to touch Thomas' finger. Then with Thomas' finger in his he stops and says "He's plastic isn't he?" OMG!!!!!! We all laughed sooooo hard and said yes he is! It was so fun! Then I told him what I did that I'm a reborn artist and such. So he says "okay shhhh let's take him outside."

We start out the back door and I can see my brother's face wondering who's baby do I have with me. Well let me tell you the whole cycle started again! It was so much fun! I let them hold him and they just could not believe Thomas wasn't real. Even an hour later I could hear the whispers "He looks so real." I just kept him next to my chair as I would a real baby. As more guests arrived they would look and smile. My sons would rock the car seat and oogle over him, adding to the realism. When it was time to go some guests still didn't know he wasn't real because they left before me.

Now the icing on the cake? My eldest brother shows up late (as usual) but I'm heading to my van to leave. He yells "Who's baby is that!?" I tell him the same story and he pulls over to explain why he's late. Because we're standing partially in the street he says "O let me park the car so you can get the baby out of the street." I put Thomas in and strap car seat in. While my brother is parking, my younger brother says "Should we tell him?" I said, "Nahh" We both laugh and turn around. We say our pajair's and head home.

Boy I'll tell you, I never thought it would be soo much fun! I am definately looking forward to finishing my next one to take her out. Sorry this was so long but I had to tell it all in order for you to get the full comedy of it!
