Thanks all! Maybe one of these days I'll get brave enough to take Taylor out. :)

I love the Sandie kit! Isn't that the anatomically correct one?

Yes, they do like them, but every once in awhile they scare someone that is supersticious & that is so funny!  A few people have fear of dolls...I don't get it!

Sherri you and your husband age very well! You both look very happy and young! I say that because many where I live tend to look and act older than they really are. Don't know why that is but they do. My neighbor and her husband I thought were about 5-6 years older than me just because they have many wrinkles and don't really care to keep up their appearance (clothes and hair). Turns out they are 5 years YOUNGER than me. Keep doing what you do because it looks good on both of you!aww

As for the conversation on taking out baby.....I haven't yet. Only because they don't look the way I want. I've only made two so far and the mistakes are very obvious to me. I do plan to take them out as I get better at it. I am going to use this summer to improve and hopefully by my next couple I will bring them out. I don't care what people think anymore. I was leary about it when I made my first but when I saw how excited my neighbors were to see she was a doll, it boosted my confidence to want to take them out when I got better. I would just like to trip out watching them as they try to figure it all outconfuse lol As it was said, I'll bring some business cards with me and hand them out. I like doing it more than trying to turn a profit. However, if you look at it as a business, you have to get your product out there or no one will know it's there.

Sorry to post twice, forgot to sign in the first timehmm

(Emily, I think I fixed your post where your message was copied three times and appeared in an html table..  I also deleted the one that you posted before you signed in since it was also a duplication.  Hope this helps!  Linda, Forum Moderator)

I have a young woman in my class at college who is scared to death of dolls! Even the little 6" mini triplets. Something happened to her when she was little I guess and she never got over it. :o

As far a taking out the babies, I ALWAYS have my biz cards with me. I love to take my little ones out. I get looks but then when they either ask to see the baby or find out it's a doll and I make and teach doll painting, most think it's pretty cool. But they don't really think I'm a crazy. I took 2 of them to Michigan with me and even put them through the xray machine! OH! the talk from all the PSA people! but I gave out lots of biz cards and everyone wanted to hold them.
And most of the people you see anyway, you probably won't ever see again, so what's the loss? "If you don't put yourself out there, no one will ever know you exist"!

Well ladies I've been reading these stories. I'm going to do it. I'm taking Joey out Tue. I have to take some bottles and cans back to Wal- Mart and he's going with me. The rooting on him isn't the the greatest but I love him, having an awful time rooting! Just seems like I can't do it right. I'm doing my second one Kinsey by BB. Just not happy on the way the hair is turning out.I would like to do  mic-rooting. I guess it comes with pratice. As far as my husband goes I asked him if he would like to go with me and he looked at me as if I was crazy well maybe I am. He's not to crazy about my dolls. I also do porcelain dolls. I kinda have them all over the house. He's says everywhere he looks something looking at him. So I told him no problem  I made one for the bathroom so he's not safe in their any more either. I don't think that helped! HA! HA! Oh well! no Joey and I will be going alone. I want to see if I can find him some baby crocs I don't think I've ever seen them before. Should be fun!   I love these day out with baby stories. I hope they become a regular section on here.          Linda

Linda...LOL...I love it! I would have done the same thing with the baby in the bathroom. Sooo funny! lol I wish you the best on your trip Tuesday. I know everything will be just fine. Just be yourself, don't look suspicious or anything. When folks ask questions show them baby. I look forward to hearing how it went.

Well, I usually go to Tuesday morning store & buy my layette things & I always keep white baby t-shirts so covers little tops of arms if find a cute short sleeve.  Walmart also has some cute things & occasionally family dollar....If it's an expensive kit to go on ebay though, and I realize people with the money to buy those want a really fancy outfit I will order on line or make something special...bought some asian prints to make some stuff for these high dollar Asian babies I bought.

Well... it's almost Tuesday.  Can't wait to find out how Linda's trip to the store with Joey turned out!

Just thinking...  I don't really have fancy bracelets or clothing for my dolls.  My excuse has always been that I was trying to achieve realism--real babies don't wear bracelets, and their mommies only dress them in fancy clothes for special occasions.  At times I confess to wishing for those special occasion clothes.  I kind of have a hard time justifying the expenditure when the economy is so bad.  Haven't you seen beautiful babies wearing beautiful clothing on eBay that do not sell or sell at a miserably low price?

biggrin  Most people are really very curious & like them so much & many will say you will be hearing from me as I want one & then you don't hear from them, but my grown nephew who is an electrician literally runs from them & I chase him & it is so funny.  He climbs huge towers & poles & messes with electricity, but is scared of my dolls.  Soooo funny.  We get a laugh at this at family get togethers....Hugs,  Sherri

cry  yes in these times it would silly to spend mad money on outfits,so i yard sale and look for deals. trust me when i say if i don't save money i ain't buying. some people think if it didn't cost alot it's trash but for instance the baby bunny slippers bought for 2.00 were very sweet and cute. i do love to dress the babys up.                                sage  aww

You know, when my children were just on the papoose board we dressed them well everyday, not just for special occasions. My daughter even had her full regalia as a little one (and those can be quite costly). She always wore pretty girly girl dresses and my son all name brand clothing. It was what we wanted to do.....However, we did know how to look for a bargain. When my ex-husband became ill and we had to use up our savings, we learned to visit consignment shops, good will, and be frugal. My parents thought they were above that and would try to make us feel bad by buying boutique clothing and other more expensive things. We found that there were really nice clothes (in excellent condition!) for a cheaper price at these other places. Now, these are the first places I check! My boys go through clothing like there is no tomorrow so spending alot of money now on a single income is just crazy. With the economy the way it is, I can still dress them in name brands now and then though because I save so much when buying everyday clothing.
Just a mention, all our babies wore jewelry. Native American jewelry mostly. We made our own and would sometimes buy wampum from friends who knew how to work with it.  We didn't have the tools and space to make it ourselves.
I plan to dress my babies in clothing that is appropriate for the kit or whatever I think their personality matches. Like Sage said, "if i don't save money i ain't buying." I say the same. I've been saving all winter, buying only when I see an awesome deal on ebay. Now I'm about to buy the rest of my supplies. Then I'm heading to the Family Dollar to  see what they have!
The clothing my avatar baby has on was really cheap....Kohl's set on clearance for $5.00! Get alot of good stuff off their clearance racks! I like Sherri's way too.....cheap kit-cheap clothes, high end kit-higher end clothes. It makes sense to me I guess.
BTW, I wonder how Linda made out today?confuse

smile   i tend to dress my babys like i was dressed as a child ,as the only grandbaby with a ton of great aunts and uncles on my mothers side i was dressed as if i was a doll. in fact being a premmie i did in fact wear doll clothes for awhile. when at gammys(my dads mother) she tryed to make up for the kids teaseing me about being half white and my mothers forgetting where she left me. so i always had the softest ,cleanest most decorated traditional clothes gammy could make. when my children came along i hand made them baby mocassins and clothes and i tend to do the same for dolls.which explains why all the babys have real silver bracelets ,ankle bracelets, bone type chokers and pierced ears.                            sage  aww

You are so funnyaww sorry about your mom forgetting where she left you. You know we mom's often get scatter-brain after having children. I once went crazy in my locked home thinking someone stole my daughter while I cleaned my house. When I came into the living room, I sat down and cried on the sofa. Then I heard a little grunt, DUHHHHH, she was fast asleep in her cradlehmm Boy did I feel stupid! LOL
On another note, I'm so glad that you make your own clothes too! There is just something special about handmade clothing and jewelry. It just holds so much more value, whether it be for yourself or you babies.
Now.....Linda? I don't know. I hope she didn't chicken outbiggrin lol Maybe we'll hear something soon. I've been waiting to see how it went. I hope it went well if she did go out with baby.confuse

Just love it.  I took mine out today as well.  I took her to Hobby Lobby, that's where I get my kits at.  Some ppl thought she/he was real.  I took her to show the manager and 2 workers there.  The guy was off..:( He'll be in later today so we're going back and gonna to tell them to page him to the front 'cos his baby wants to see him...LOL  Then we ventured to Walmart and I had a ball.  Especially since my preemie is white and I'm AA.  I love it.  But she/he is just beautiful.

I am correcting some of my early ones & selling now & when you do that you see how much better you are getting with eyes & hair & all & I don' t take any out except ones that I know look like a real baby & they can draw a crowd  especially at Hobby lobby; people just love therm & of course everybody wants to hold them.  It's great advertising & most of the time I just break even on them...LOL  but if you can make a little on the ones that sell well; then can afford more babies.  I feel old after I exercise for about 2 days.  It is easy to get in a rut over 50 & just have to force yourself to do things if sore & hurting here & there.  LOL, tried palates & could'nt do all of it, but what I did hurt for 2 days & still stiff today.  LOL  Blessings & have a great day.

Yes, Linda I saw a pretty baby on ebay that sold for 375.00 & I know lady had 175.00 in clothing on doll & doll was probably 100.00 sculpt so she made 100 dollars, or less with eyes & hair.  Thing is always start bid where you will make a profit; she should have started at 425.00  doll had some clothes I have seen for sell & like 3 expensive outfits, and was reborned beautifully.  You just don't get paid for the long hours you put into it; thats for sure.

Sounds like everyone is having fun with their babies. I'm taking my little Vivien to a doll show today. I spoke with one of the doll judges a few days ago. She had no idea what a "reborn" was so said to bring it up. Maybe I'll get them to have a new catagory? The have polymer clay dolls, cloth dolls, etc but no reborns. I'm bringing 4 with me so we'll see what happens.

Think maybe Linda and little Joey got lost? Or maybe everyone loved him so much she's still out with him? lol

As far as clothing for my babies, I go to Kohl's, JC Penny, and Herberger's for their clothing if I'm looking for fancy or special. However... I only usually go to the clearance racks! I found a beautiful red/white fancy dress for little Vivien for only $10 and of course the patent leather shoes for cheap! So she's dressed to the 9's for about $18-$20! And since I'm a new jeweler, I make all their silver jewelry myself :)
I am also working on a traditional American Indian outfit for one of my babies (including hand beadwork) with mocs as my family is American Indian. It takes a long time though if you do it all by hand. I am doing all the silver work myself too.

Thank you, Noantum. It is great advertising. I'm ordering my 1st full term in acouple of wks and can't wait. Also, got them scuplting video for 6" babies, so I'm going get started on that later today, I can't wait. This is one of most relaxing hobbies I have started and I love it. Because you can see your work in progress. I do porcelain dolls as well, but this new craft gives me more pleasure, I can carry them w/ me w/out having to worry about breaking them... PPL have asked me if my baby was for sale, said "no, he's my 1st and he's staying w/ me"...lol I got his first outfit at Walmart, but will make the rest. Everyone take care.

Every once in awhile I find a brand new newborn outfit at Catholic charities & found a disney land pajama white with tag brand new & lovely soft material.  Find articles also that accentuate bought things like fancy little shoes that are never worn before & very interesting to shop some of the better thrift stores. Also if making bracelets for babies lots of beeded necklaces that you can wash in dish soap & take apart & they are usually 10 cents a necklace & like new.  Love the thrift shops.  Find a toy sometimes like a stuffed dragan plan on putting with a fairy some where along the line.  Always on look out for Panda bears to go with my Asian babies as pretty expensive on line.  It seems to take a long time to find all the competeted things for an outfit.  Found a paci today at CVS pharmacy with a panda head on it...

biggrin  Well, I guess I am less worried about people than I use to be & confident in my old age that I'm no crazier than the next person!  Well you think about people who drink & drive & they are'nt one bit ashamed of what they do & people that do all kinds of crazy things in public & so I walk my babies when Ishop sometimes & I walk my huge lab & terrier & I'm just finding in my old age more important to be having fun than worrying about what others think & they usually have a little child in them too.  LOL, however you will meet a supersitious one that you scare to death with your visious doll now & then & think that is so funny.  I have a nephew that I can chase with the doll & he is 32...LOL  at family get togethers...

Yes, it comes in a boy, or a girl & I have the boy, and the kit is huge & very large pretty baby.  Amazing kit & have started it, but have so many going now.  Working on Li Hua, Kayoko, Lotus & Sandy * Wibke & others...I vein & do inner wash on all & then focus in on about 5 of them.  Doing little Jiao & he is an infant & think he is going to be so cute.  Try to do all my Asian babies at once as can blush all with a little of base paint mixed in blush & once get that Asian blend mixed up dont waste paint so much.  Have a great day, doing coffee here in Odessa, TX & it's raining until Wednesday they say.  Sherri

Too bad Odessa and Phoenix aren't closer.  I think it's gonna take a day out with Sherri and her babies to make me and Dee courageous enough to venture out with the babies.

In the meantime, I have a repair job from someone who lives in the area.  She found my website so maybe I'm doing something right?  She said she spent more money than she ever planned to on a reborn doll.  After she received the doll, her dog destroyed the eyes, and she's had it put away for more than a year.  She said she was embarrased.  I couldn't determine if she was embarrassed because she spent all that money on a doll, or because her dog is so badly behaved, or because her dog destroyed something she paid a lot of money for.

I found both the eyes and the eye lashes inside the doll's head.  The eyes were way too large so it's no wonder they came out.  There is also some weird green squishy material inside a sock in the doll's head.  I threw it out without further investigation (I don't even want to know what it is!) and will replace it with polyfill, beads/pellets.  I am working on hand rooting the eyelashes, and will replace the eyes with some that fit.  Too bad I can't fix the rest of the doll, but that wasn't part of the deal.

However... the gal wanted to know if I have any reborns to sell so I need to hustle to finish up some that have been sitting here in a partially-rooted state.

Anyway... it has done me a lot of good to work on the doll because I see that my dolls are actually way more realistic looking.  Her doll looks like it is wearing lipstick, has a skin rash, and the poor baby has no hair whorl so she needs a re-root or a bonnet.  Maybe I'm gaining a little bit of confidence to take my dolls out after working on this poor repair baby.

Anyone hear how the other Linda's day out with baby went?

Linda

biggrin  Yes, that would be fun!  Know what you mean about repairing a doll & they just want a certain thing done & leave the rest, but it is a compliment to you.  We could hit walmart & hobby lobby & that is best place to show babies around here; they also have a fit at the Grandmothers' shop where they sell adora dolls & beautiful clothes there.  Ruffeled panties & just a beautiful litle shop with some high dollar clothes, but got a bunch of cute shoes on sale for 2 dollars the other day.  Hugs, Sherri   Oh & also some bows...thrilled me to death...Here are my twins that I sold to a college girl & she was so cute with them as she is hispanic & they are albino twins (Joey & Josie)

blankstare  Thankyou, I made him quite awhile back & have another set of those that I could make twins of & think they are so cute.   Have all these others that I have never made before though.  My husband bought this baby on ebay that was older & reborned really badly & think nail tips were glue - elmers & oh she was awful...finally sold her & this is a picture of her face.  Her rooting was so bad I had to put a clear partial wig on top of head & root around it.  She is going to Friendswood, TX & second doll I have sold to this girl & one repair.  Really hard to get the shine off of her after stripping her paint & painting & baking again. She has been Matt Varnished 4 times....LOL

Thankou Naontum, but I am sure having a hard time getting my Li Hua the right color; wow lots of layers to get this gir the right color & not as dark as my creases, but she is going to be mine so will just keep working until I get her right.  Some vinyl are so receptive to the paint & others are more difficult & don't know why as she is an expensive kit.  Painted her hair & going to root over it 7 like the look of that, but really thinking about another flesh layer too now that I've done details.  Ug....Have a great night...blankstare

no  Be careful leaving your babies as had a girl try to run off with one of mine in Walmart...LOL & had to say "No, you can't take her off, they cost to much to make"  Hope she is there when you go back!  People really like them, and you do have to be careful when you go out as some will say "Oh want to take her in the back & show other employee, or I have somone across the store I want to show her & can I bring her back. Funny, but they can be kidnapped so easily.  I just always say "Well, no I will go over there with you"

That's how it is Sherri, just a little at a time with the layers. This time I'm going very very thin and light and build from there. My problem on my second baby was that the first layer was too light. Then I kept on her to try and even it out, unfortunately the light layer just kept shining through.hmm Man was I annoyed. I know you've been doing it longer than me and will have better success. I hope all turns out well.

You also have a point on being careful with letting people keep the babies. I don't know though, I guess if I know the people well I'm okay with it. However, if it's someone I don't know well (as in whom I've just met) then for-get-a-bout-it! She's not going anywhere!aww It was Sage's dentist so she must know them quite well. I don't know.....I have a fairly new dentist (3 years) so I probably would ask my mother about them. She and my dad have been with them 15yrs. Just depends I guess. Walmart? noway would I let them go. Smile, good call on that one.

blankstare  Well, they probably leave it in office when they go home & do have janitors in there I'm sure, but if it was gone as busy as a doctors office is might not notice for awhile & I'm telling you I have had people just flat try to take them away from me & so wierd, but there are some crazy folks out there.  Just a little warning for day out with the baby.  Yes, I am just continuing with layers until completely happy with her & you know; it is hard to be patient, but that is exactly what it takes & they just don't get that real skin tone & look without lots of layers & pretty thin ones.  I blush, crease lips & nails on one & then flesh the next over & over  & just so thrilling when it finally looks like a baby.  I don't save those creases & lips & all for last & just use thnner on lips to clean off on flesh layers.  She is coming along, but so many needed on this vinyl & some of the vinyls that way I notice....takes more time & others really pick up pigment better.  Sold this little girl & her mommy should get her today.  Hugs, Sherri

Sherri, you are really tempting me with this talk about Li-Hua.  I am a dealer for Real Effect Kits, but I didn't want to reborn the stock or I won't be in business long.  Still, I think that kit is so cute.  And, maybe I need to experience the way that vinyl takes the paint.  Yes, no, yes, no, yes, no....?  First I need the time and discipline to finish rooting at least one head before I start another project.
Hugs,
Linda

blankstare  Well it takes alot more layers than most, but she is looking good & smooth, but reminds me of Mikey vinyl that I did & was really hard to get the color I wanted on him; like every layer just looked the same you know.  I can't remember sculpter, but here is the doll & he sold & looked good, but remember many many layers to get look I wanted & he has a scratch on his eye  & a milk bump on nose & don't know if you can see it, but know that was a simular vinyl only a little worse, but this is good vynil, but just funny how it takes so much more effort.  Here is that Mikey, or Micky sculpt bought on ebay..  Would have to look back to tell you sculpter.
