biggrin         since i started this topic i should get us started-let me start by saying the doll i went out with came from a little auction house and they gave her to me cause they were going toss her in the rubbish bin.she is a j turner 1984 real baby-she was filthy and smelled(cat). well months later i had to take her to town to try on crocs-she has hard to fit feet- we tryed on and picked out 2 pair ,then went on to baby clothes.we were finally in line when i hear from behind me-omg i thought that was a real baby-the next thing i knew i had 5 women and a husband holding her and asking questions-i felt quite silly at first but they seemed to adore her,we ended up exchangeing #s                yours sage     aww

Hahaha that is so funny. I think it's great to take baby out.

I took one of my babies to college with me to show her off (Vivian by Wasnjuk). While waiting for the elevator, a dark skinned woman came up to me and wanted to see my baby. When she finally saw it was a doll and I said I make them, she asked me "do you make brown babies?"
It's always an adventure :)

Great stories ladies. I hope to soon make a baby well enough that I'd venture out with her/him. I've only spoken to neighbors who thought I was taking pictures of a real baby (my avatar baby). They loved her showed her around, and recently one asked if I was going to do more. I bout two kits so far, a vintage scale, and now plan to buy some Genesis paints. Keep up the great news!aww

I love reading these stories!

Liselle, I don't have guts to take mine out alone either.  I need for all of you to move to my town so we can have baby doll outings together!

I even have trouble wearing my Red Hat garb on my way to outings with my Red Hat group.  No one ever sees me wearing that red hat in the car if I'm driving by myself, but I get really brave when I'm around lots of other "Hats."

   Hi Everyone ,

Reading down though the forum . I also reading the different things on their that's how you learn. WELL I was so excited to come across this topic ! I've aways want to take my baby out but thought I was the only crazy! So glad to see I'm not the only one. I've take Joey to the bank to show the girls because they know I make dolls. But now I'm going to take him shopping and put him in a shopping cart just like a real baby and see what kind of reaction I get. What do you guys think? I will have to do it on a trip by myself Dan wouldn't want to be seen with me with a doll like that . HA! HA! I wish too we lived closer so we could get together and maybe go out for coffee or something. People could really see  all us ladies  together and think we are off our rockers! HA! HA! biggrin

Oh yes I do think they areaww Also, you know the clothes will lastbiggrin he he
Your avatar baby is so cute! If my baby looked like your little one, I'd then go out with baby. You have eight kits? My, you will be busy. I have two at present but I still need to buy paints and some whispy eyelashes from Secrist. As for clothes, I was browsing ebay last night and saw so many cute dresses and things. It's just too bad that there aren't many things for boys. I plan to make a baby boy or two so it would have been nice to find something there. Anyhoo, I look forward to seeing your babies in their cute outfits.

8 kits?? Where did you get them all, and wasn't that terribly expensive? (Excuse me asking, if that's too rude, it's just that money is a HUGE issue with me right now being unemployed.)

So far, I plan on making MOST of mine boys, but I guess they might say otherwise. For some reason, I am VERY partial to the boys, not sure why. Maybe because the first reborn I fell in love with was a boy.

I keep watching for the Sheila Michael's anatomically correct (AC) half torso to go cheaper than $90, but I'm not holding my breath. There is another sculpt out there with an AC torso, the last name is Gomes with an s or a z, I can't recall, I think.

LOL you ladies are so funnysmile Sage, I must say that is how it is done eh? Finding those deals can be daunting but it pays off when you find good ones. w00t.gifI didn't think that Family Dollar would have nice clothes. I've been there for household things but I will definately take a trip there today and check out the baby things. $3.50 for baby crocs, wow. As far as the yard sales go.... here the folks are really big on them in Spring. Every weekend the streets are lined with cars and the poles with signs. However, not many baby clothes that are in good condition. I plan to try a few consignment shops. I haven't been since my little ones were quite small (haven't had any clothes to donate now that they are big). Hopefully they will have something.
Kits?? Are the kits your finding on ebay the non-toxic type? I've bought from LDC and am watching Secrist because the kits are non-toxic and the vinyl is better. Used to buy from BB but when I received the kits from LDC I loved them! Plan to give Secrist a whirl too.

Hello everyone, every time I make a new baby I take them out & usually in a stroller & hand out my cards & people are beginging to know me "Oh, you are the lady that makes the dolls"  Great advertizement & have made one locally for someone that way.  This is the last baby I took out & he is "Blake" Jackquillin Gwinn kit & just love him & keep some babies for me to take out & show at home & don't sell.  Making Li Hua now for me to have to take out & if ever offered enough for the baby would sell when out.  Oh, can't get my picture on here & will see if I can use him as my aviator.  Blessings & hope to visit with some of you girls!
Ok, figured out how to put my pictures now!  LOL  Hugs, Sherri aka' TweetyWoo

smile  hey girls, my kaya kit by eva helland just arrived.is it ever cute-- kind of a sleeping baby about to fuss-- well that's what the photo of the kit looked like. she'll be a 20" baby.i like the big babys -- the berenguer babys are yummy chubby babys, so i have a couple of them to do. when you look for kits on ebay it helps if you can go to secrist or bb and see what they're chargeing for the same size baby /same kit. be careful, sometimes people on ebay are chargeing more then the company. as to them being toxic well-- if it's a teagen you know it's bb --- so before you bid check the name and try and look it up. i guess i need to finish the three babys i'm working on so i can get started on my new kits.                                sage  aww

Sometimes get the secrist a little cheaper on ebay, but always afraid I will get one of the older oily ones that secrist replaced one for me & they had a bad batch for awhile & have changed the vynil now.  I did a Hayden & have a Phebe from an ebay buy, but think it is fine...just be a little leary of that as Secrist will replace it if oily.  They won't hold the paint when they are like that, and usually can see the oil in the bag.  Here is my Hayden & he was sold on ebay.

My favorite rooting needles are at hobby lobby & buy the heavy duty & if get extra hair pull a few out.  I put rice in a sock & put it in microwave & heat it & stick in the head before I root.  My favorite rooting needle holder is a little wooden one with a plug in it & think I got it at Dolls by Sandie.  Think they have about 5 a pack & called Clover brand.  The better hair roots easier too & looks the way you want it.  It is so expensive for a toddler...Ug 80 dollars & part of that was synthetic hair inbetween the good stuff; lost a little mone on that sell. People like hair on them & they like open eyes better when buying one; at least that is my experience. Blessings, Sherri   Here is picture of my first African American Baby a custom sell to a girl...wow they are hard...to get palms of hands & soles of feet blended right & lighter & the darker paints need to be baked twice becouse if you get a smudge with thinner very difficult to fix.  It's seems those 2 darkest are the ones that need longer baking time.

blankstare My nick name is Tweetybird becouse I had a big head & big feet as a baby with 1 little blond sprout on top of my head!  LOL  I have been called that by my family all of my life. That is funny about your Jamacan friend.  I have taken babies out & had African American people ask me if I make the black babies & I tell them yes, but they take longer than the others & charge more for them now.

What a wonderful picture! You all look so lovely togetheraww 19 babies sold? That's good, hope I can sell when I'm finished. That is so great that your husband doesn't mind going out with you. I've heard some say their spouses don't mind them making the babies, but I haven't heard of any besides yourself that actually have their husband go out with baby. Good for you!

Well, when all of them sold, he was pretty convienced that we could make a home business out of it & he enjoys looking at them too.  He picks out clothes all of the time & I have boxes of clothes, but the really expensive kits usually get a high dollar outfit & a less expensive one & all get a white t-shirt & diaper.  Its great fun, but can spend all day doing it without getting ready for the day if you don't watch out!  LOL

blankstare  I know, I should start out with a shower, dress & then walk & then start on dolls just like a regular job & kind of time myself as I can over do it & wind up dressing & bathing for bed.  LOL  Putting a lttle doll together that was reborned badly on ebay & repaired her & getting ready to put her back on ebay.  Don't think I will get more than we paid for her though as husband paid 50.00 little city toy Asian and she is the harder vynil.  He bought her for me & I was like why did you buy her?  LOL   Men are so funny.  Good practice for me though.  Have a great morning!  Hugs, Sherri

lol it is very easy to lose track of time. When I did my last baby, I had to make dinner for several nights because I would forget to stop and start dinnerhmm My kids would just look at me and I'd say "Uh no no....there is dinner, heat it upbiggrin" They would laugh and then watch me while they ate.
Your Indian baby is so cute! It's good that you put him in buckskin. That is different that not many reborners do. You do not look old, it's how you feel and enjoy what your doing. Beautiful outfit on baby, you are truly blessed!

Yes, I just keep it put up & he wears everyday clothes, but if I ever had a show or something would have the fashion statement. I will be 57 this month...ug...my husband is 1 year older than me, but he is Asian & does'nt show his age as much as an old blonde...LOL Yes, I feel blessed to get to do this as 30 years in Nursing & working 12 hour shifts & nice to get to do something I enjoy so much. Hugs, and have a nice day. Sherri

Ok, ya'll I have a question for you concerning taking the babies out. I had Taylor (Zoe) with me today, since I went over to my sister's house. Well, first let me say she thought s/he was beautiful, and that I did a good job on it.

On the way home, I had to stop at the store, and was VERY tempted to take Taylor in. But I didn't. I thought, what if I see someone I know! I guess I just don't know what I would say if someone asked if it was real, and I feel really weird taking a DOLL in a store. I really don't want someone to think I'm crazy for carrying a doll around. Does that make sense??

How do you all deal with that?

I always use a magenta thin wash on Asian babies & I have a reciepe that I use like a 5, 6 7 mix pin size #2 red & I always use Baby skin on all my babies somewhere in first layers.  Oh, and I put  a little more than a pin size of the yellow ochre in that mix.  Forgot to answer you on this & this is what I do with mine & trying the strawberry undertones from secrest on them too, and mx my own last blushes with dk red, lt ret pin smuge of green & burnt umber.  The green gives it a lovely color tones the red down.  & do with lip & just experiment & get my own style.  Some of this learned from instructional CD's  Hugs, Sherri  This is Taneaka & sold her a long time ago, but have another I want to make for me!  LOL

I have that boy "Sandy" by Sheila Micheals & working on him now, but my husband buys them for me about one a month, or every other month.  When my dolls sell too then if I make a little profit then I buy one.  I sold all of mine at first & just have 2 for myself to make a little income first...Hugs, Sherri

I feel that way too, I am not brave enough to take my babies out, my mom already thinks I crazy but I don't care I love this art form, I carry a little photo album in my purse with my babies in it I show it to everyone. I was at walmart one day and there was this little girl about 10 years old she had a doll with her I told her that I liked her doll I told her that I liked dolls too I asked her mom could I should her my babies she said yes, I showed them the pixs they could'nt believe they were dolls they asked if I sold them I said yes when they found out the price the conversation was over, thats the problem no one wants to pay you for what they are worth, I will keep them before I 'd sale them for cheap.

This is true that people don't want to pay you for all of the hours you have put into that doll & think as your reputation grows you can increase the price & I sold mine in the begining for less as my experience was'nt as good as some of the other dolls I saw...All of them sold & I made a little on all of them & customeres were happy, but some babies just are'nt as likable as others & people really always want the open eye babies when they order & I am doing less sleeping babies, but do have some of those kits too, but will have to put on ebay.  I felt that way too at first, but have to get them out there to get the business going.  Mine is better now, but & have about 3 regular customers.  Hugs, Sherri
