hi, my other half bought me some lovely black alpaca-it is soooo soft but haveing never used any i was hope someone would have some input or advice. thanks sage
Alpaca should be fine as long as it's from a younger animal. It does tend to get more course as the animal ages. I have 3 colors of baby llama hair waiting to be used. I got a large bag of it from a friend of my daughters (I mean a REALLY large bag!) and so I just need to process it. I'll prob do that this summer while I'm off school.
You could always test it on a test limb or something. Just root a patch and see how you like it. Then let us know :)
well haveing started this thread i will now share what i i've learned .1 st-- suri is the type you need--2nd locks not roveing! when it roveing it is to fine . an artist on another forum recently rooted a baby in blond alpaca useing locks,it turned out great! you've got to see it. so i will wrestle my way thru the babys head useing my roveing,my next baby is being done in dk fawn alpaca locks. wish me luck. sage

well i'm back, just glued the inside of my babys head--- i'm not going to brag on my rooting job ---- but i did learn to root roveing alpca, with a 40g needle you get a lovely wispy baby look---i over rooted areas trying to get get a handle on the hair--- one thing about it is that the roveing tends to tangle/knot while you work on other areas but i will try it again. it is worth the hassle for the nice wispyness. yours sage

i'd love to see him,did you use locks or roveing? my next baby is being done in dk fawn alpaca locks-----the roveing is sooo soft and wispy,i untangled it useing my rooting needle then i combed it to reduce breakage. i'm also got some tibetian lambs wool to try. yours sage
I don't know, just cut it off the skin. I'll put him in show case. Under Jefferson Brian. He is only pale, but that is what his original picture was like. XXXXX June.
here's my ugly baby--- i rooted him with roveing alpaca--- as i said it wasn't anything to brag about. sage

June and Sage, do you prefer the alpaca over good mohair? Which would you choose for a newborn?

linda , i like the alpaca locks because for softness you can't beat it and it comes in alot of natual colors(no dye run worries) also lacks alot of the kink/coareness you get with mohair.haveing said that i will follow with the fact that you want suri alpaca hair,it is finer so you may have some breakage .the roveing alpaca hair is even softer, great for that wispy look.......but it tangles.......because it it so fine i worked the tangles out with my rooting needle before combing. another plus is it tends to be less expensive then mohair. hope this helps. sage
