Today while I was in town picking up my granddaughter from day care, a lady came to the door, my husband showed him on of my Fairies, picked her up and thought she was wet, when he told me I checked her and it is one of the ones that was manufactured with extra release agent, so I would have painted her at the end of 2007 early 2008 and she is just starting to seep now, why has it taken so long. I have sold a couple arround that time and I am hoping they are not doing the same thing.  I still have Starlight who I have not finished because of this and the suppler that Secrists told me to contact said that because I didn't purchase from her, she couldn't help and I still Pheobe to do.  I have probably three to strip back and repaint. ONE DAY.   XXXXX     June.

Found this on another forum....

It is part of a reply by secrist

"

I'll let you know a way you can "save" the oily reborned parts in the mean time. Get 100% Denatured Alcohol (available at most large hardware stores) and use that to remove the oil from the parts. Once the part is dry, paint every exterior surface with your regular skin foundation to your satisfaction and set the paint. The paint, when used as directed, will "seal" the vinyl and keep oil from seeping out."

I do not have any other solution for you - sorry

I have tried the procedure with the denatured alchohol and skin foundation paint.  It seems to work for a period of time and then becomes oily again.  Secrist says their sealer will work to seal in the oiliness and prevent it from seeping.

However... I do not understand how to seal the interior of the doll to prevent the oiliness from spreading to the suffing materiols. And I have concerns that the sealer can be used effectively on a doll that already has a rooted head.  Does anyone know how to apply the sealer to an already-rooted head without harming the rooted hair?

I think you might have to use a fan brush and put it on the inside. But then again, if you've already sealed it on the inside you'd just be putting it on the glue. Hmmm, I think I'm going to send an e-mail to the office on this one, and also state that it only works for a period of time. I'll keep you posted... :o

I read on another forum (DF) to run it thru the whole cycle in your dishwasher and that this works perfectly. Another idea for you to think about. If you try it and it works, please post. The denatured alcohol is from Secrist. Good luck. Sandy McGee

Thanks Pat, I have had no problems with the other brand of kits, not that I have done many. But have one partly done, Starlight, which I know I dont want to finish, the two fairies, Lollipop and Missy, and Pheobie that I have still to do. The old cheap Peterkins, or Buerenguar seem to have no problems. XXXXX June.

Follow-up on putting oily dolls in dishwasher. I ran my practice parts thru the whole wash, sanitize and dry cycle to see what would happen. Nothing at all happened. I have 6 kits to prep and that would be an easy way for the prep bath, but I'm chicken. Sandy

I put Pheobe through the dish washer, the outside of her came out lovely, but inside is still on the oily side, I was wondering if putting some acetone in and shaking it up and down would wash out any other release agent? Thanks for your help. XXXXX June.

I wouldn't do acetone cause it might take off all your hair glue but maybe the denatured alcohol instead.

Does anyone have experience with acetone on mohair?  I think you are right that most glues would probably not stand up to acetone.  If the glue doesn't come off, I'm thinking it could at least become brittle.  Does acetone take the dye out of mohair?  Just wondering...

I stripped a doll with acetone - skin color too red. The mohair was by Susan Nagel. Hair and eyelashes are ok. - The hair looks kinda pinkish to me, but I think it is the underlying skin color, because I didn't want to get as much acetone in the hair. But texture, silkiness are great. It's also been cooked in oven at 265 a bunch of times. Boy howdy, that's good mohair. Sandy

Well, you could always try the acetone on some of your hair to see if it makes it brittle or anything. Although I use human hair dye on my mohair so it's different than a lot of mohair people cause I've been told they use an acid type color bath for their hair.
You can also root some hair on a test part and try that.

As far as the acetone inside the head it probably would either soften or eat away the glue. Don't want either one of those things happening. YIKES!
Susan Nagle's mohair seems pretty quality then. :) I've heard good things about it.

Interesting that Susan Nagel's mohair can stand up to acetone.  Do you know what dye she uses?  I wonder if all mohair can handle acetone without changing the color or texture.

I don't know what kind of dye she uses.
I know a lot of mohair people use an acid dye bath so I don't think that would work with the acetone thing. Might come out with some weird fairie colors or something lol. ;) I wonder if she'd tell anyone?

Here is a reply from the Secrist office:

The question to ask them is what was used to seal the vinyl? Did they use Genesis or AR? Those are the only two paints that will seal vinyl. If they applied the sealer to cover the entire skin surface then no oil should be coming through. Many people apply sealer in an inconsistent patchy manner. Wherever there is an unsealed area the oil could come through.

Also once they seal the outside properly the oil inside will not leak out and it shouldnt cause a problem. There really is no functional reason to seal the inside of the vinyl parts. It wont affect the outside of the vinyl surface.

As for the lady who wants to use alcohol insead the head, I wouldnt try to clean the inside of the parts. It wont affect the outside. Once you seal the outside any oil in the vinyl is trapped inside and cant get out anymore. If they want to clean the inside they could use Dawn dish soap. It will cut the oil and remove it without damaging the paint job.

You know Pat, Coke seems to clean mirrors and stains, it may be a cheap way of cleaning the oil from the inside before putting it in the dish washer So does vinegar and Bicarb SODA

I soaked mine in Dawn dishwashing soap for several days, rinsing and repeating several times. Make sure you get the inside, that is where the oil seems to be coming from. That was several months ago and it seems to have done the trick, but I am not selling those pieces until I wait a while to see if they are going to start seeping again.

That is sad June :( I know I would hate to take apart my babies :o
Although I have 4 that have had no issues whatsoever but the bare vinyl... :( I'm going to do a large hot bath for them in Dawn once the weather comes warmer. Not that they'll get a chilll you know hehehe

I am going to thoroughly let them dry for 2 days, then I'll coat with Genesis matte sealer. I'll have my oven going for days!!! YIKES!! I'm just trying to figure out why some teaching aid heads I painted over 3 years ago are seeping. It's like its contageous or something.

As far as the Coke, I know that it will strip paint off a car right down to the bare metal, and tenderize a roast!!! You all may not want to try that one. And what if there are still residual stickies? I've heard of someone having "ants in their pants" (an old saying in Indiana and Minnesota, probably now called ADHD) but ants in their dolls? hehehe
I think I'm still gonna try the Dawn and hot water!

I've done the disher with Pheobe, outside is OK. I'm going to try the coke and then the dishwasher again. As for Ants in my Pants, I have them all the time, fun aren't they. Especially when you can't sit still and do nothing. I have been sorting out my molds since Sat. I has been raining non stop and I am still not finished , so have had to cancel the ladies from coming untill I sort them all and pour them, drying in this rain is going to be a bother as we dont have power points in the shed yet . Will have to depend on power cables for awhile. Hopefully by the weekend I will be set to go. XXXXXX June.

Ewwwww... ants & coke mixed with vinyl would have to go in the dishwasher, wouldn't it?

My problem with the entire matte sealer solution remains.  How do you prevent the oozing from affecting the stuffing material on the inside of the doll?  The matte sealer from Genesis and AR is not liquid enough to put inside a limb, for instance, and swish around to coat the inside.

I have asked this question but have never received any answer other than to use the matte sealer.  It's like no one is really reading the question.  Or maybe it's me!  Is there an answer, and I'm somehow missing it?

When the stuffing material inside the vinyl gets damp, it causes problems including discoloration of the vinyl.  I've seen this and tried to repair problems like this on vintage dolls.

I haven't had an answer either. I would like them replaced, but I put so much into the one I finished and I don't like rooting, so I guess I will strip back and redo. XXXXX June. Ps, my pink fairy, that I layed on Santa's Red velvet suit, has sucked up the colour from his velvet, all over her face and hands. XXXX

OMG!!! That's terrible! I guess I'm not going to have anyone leaning on anyone now! Hmmm.
Ya Linda, I haven't gotten a good answer either. Like you said, maybe someone isn't reading the question right or something. Iknow it's not me :o

I can't put anyone in the dishwasher as I don't have one. Well, I did have a semi-automatic one but she moved out a year ago hehehehe

I'm still going to do the hot water/Dawn bath as soon as it's warmer (it's in the low 40"s all week here, we're having a heat wave hehehe).

Yes, well I have been busy, They want to move their caravan on site, they are so thrilled, Sat, they cleaned 2 dolls each, I fired them Sat night, It has been raining cats and dogs here, but today was sunny, more rain to come. Sat was from 9am to 7.30 pm, For them and till 1.30 am for me before I could go to bed, Tonight will be the same, so I sent heads home with them to clean so they can do the rest of the cleaning tomorrow. They also got 2 morelots of greenware and want some of my little tiny Kathern Mather, sculpts, about 2.5 inchs. There is six of them in a set and they have their own mushroom, setting I would also have to pour plus the Tea Cup Fairies. I think it will be 2.30 am before I get to bed, I also cleand Sweat Dreams, I think she is from Donna Rubert. I am doing her by the 15th, my Birthday, for Macey. She will call her Sweat Dreams Stawberry Shortcake. It's the first porcelain doll I have made since she was born in Oct 2005. You could get the plain to Brisbane and we could pick you up. Brisbane is 2.5 hrs from us. NOW don't shirk off and not come. LOL.... XXXXXX June.

Sorry Linda, didn't get back on this subject untill tonight. Ask Pat, making porcelain dolls is very relaxing, and you dont have to do all that rooting( my pet hate) most porcelain dolls Greenware comes with a body pattern for that percific doll or baby, most teachers or greenware suppliers have cloths patterns to, for each doll if you want to make it as the original artist. I tend to copy mine from bridel or childrens magizines. If you can reborn, you can make a porcelain doll, with the right teacher............................... Still haven't done anything about the oily babies, but will post a pic soon as one of them is also covered in dust. XXXXXX June.

That's okay, June.  I've had a hard time getting on the forum this week.

There's been a lot going on with my family, I'm working on a couple of dolls, and I have to leave for 2 weeks in the morning.  Don't laugh...  I'm going up to Las Vegas and staying with my daughter so I can be nanny for her boss's 2 baby girls while their regular sitter is on maternity leave.  I'll miss my own granddaughter while I'm gone, but the change of pace will probably be good.   My daughter also has a lot of appointments set up for use to check out places to have her wedding next year so that should be fun.

Hugs,
Linda

I didn't know that saying existed in Australia.  Smart people, those Aussies.  It does sort of feel like a holiday.  At least until I go upstairs in a minute to wake the sleeping tots.  Time for more fun with the little girls.

Hahaha that is exactly right Sage. Be like a grandma, spoil them and give them back. hehehe.
Sorry, I have been out too! Stress sent me to the emergency room Sun swearing I was having a heart attack! Didn't get out till 6pm Monday. Then I was exhausted AND I had graduation last night. So now I'm off school and can devote time to answering more questions in forum :)

Linda, making porcelains is pretty cool, like June said... "with the right teacher"! It's like out base coat... its all about preparing the base for what is to come. With porcelains its about cleaning ALL the seams, preparing the eye holes and internal beveling, etc. But I'm sure you would be fine with it. The greenware is very delecate though. You basically sand it with cotton balls!

But glad to be back with a sound heart and from now on its either panic attacks or blood pressure issues. :o lol

Pat, I'm glad you have a strong, healthy heart, and it was only a panic attack.  Panic attacks can be debilitating so I hope you can slow down and rest up after your hectic school schedule.  The good news is that they aren't known to be fatal by themselves, and the bad news is one of them can creep up on you when you are least expecting it.

The little girls I'm babysitting are cute, but the 3-year-old is a handful.  She is ornery, and I'm not sure I want to spoil her any more than she already is.  The baby is  14 months old and cute as a button.  She loves to cuddle and and is a giggler.
She is easy to spoil.  The funny thing is she doesn't want to go to her mommy or her daddy when they get home.   LOL.

Linda
