My first attempt at reborning
Permalink

hi, this is my first, he is a berenguer  whom I bought reborn and didn't like as he went shiney and was full of dark wet sand so I thought I would have a go at improving him, I stripped him back to basics and after lots of advice and experimenting this is how he turned out, not perfect by any means but I'm pleased with my first attempt.

thanks Ivy, I thought I would start reborning this way as it is quite an expensive hobby and kits in the uk also seem quite expensive, I didn't want to spend too much incase I was hopeless at it . I have now bought a secrist Fern kit to try. I'm glad you think he's ok.

Well Adel,   You have made this into a very beautiful baby boy.  You must be very, very talented.  I doubt I could do that.  Hey...I have a big box of shame full of icky babies.  Maybe I should put them up for sale and you can buy them and fiix them and sell them and become rich and famous!!!!!!!!!!!!  LOL...joking of course...but this baby boy is just awesome!!!  You really should see my first 20 attempt..lol

unfortunately I didn't take a before photo and wish I had I also did not have a very good camera and had to borrow one to take these pics, My hubby and I treated ourselves after Christmas to a nice camera so if I manage to get a good result on my next reborn I will post more pics.So far I'm not having much luck,I started a Fern kit which was the older firmer vinyl but my dog chewed the limbs,Ihave purchased some more limbs but they are the newer softer ones and slightly more pink, just hoping I can do a mint wash on them to match them up. Adel x

Internal washes are a bit longer in the oven. 10 minutes I think. I don't use the internal washes.

Yes, internal wash is at the same temp but Tina is right... 10 minutes as we found out at Secrist that 8 was still not set. So we do 10 on the internal and 8 on the others.
We think what happens is that inside the parts there is not enough room for the air to circulate so this makes for a longer time.

Do you think baking for longer than 8 minutes contributes to more shine?  I've been trying something different with the internal wash in an attempt to cut down on the length of time the parts are in the oven.  I discovered by accident (forgot to set the timer and think it was in the oven like maybe 12 minutes?) that the vinyl becomes shinier if the parts are in the oven for too long.  Maybe 10 minutes isn't enough to make a difference, but I haven't wanted to take a chance.

I decided to limit all baking sessions to 8 minutes, and make a special attempt to remember to set the timer.  If the interior wash is not cured the first time, I allow it to cool in preparation for the next layer of paint.  If the interior is still so wet that I cannot paint the next layer, I just put it back in the oven for 8 minutes.  I continue this until the interior is dry enough to handle without worrying about purple spreading to a place where I don't want it.
