Question about ovens to use
Permalink

I'm looking to buy a small countertop oven to use for reborning.  I found a couple of digital control toaster ovens, but most seem to be convection.  Can you use convection ovens?  Is the baking time less?  Also, I have a connection through my daytime business for lab ovens, but I thought I read here somewhere that I shouldn't use them.  Thanks for any help!

CONVECTION QUESTION
Permalink

Oh, I'm so glad you asked that, because I was going to ask it.  I've heard that the convection is the way to go.  BB uses a Haier (Ithink that is what it's called) and Stephanie Sullivan said on her site that she recomended the convection.  I guess you have to make sure there is enough room for the head and also to pad it with fiberfil or whatever you use.  I don't know about the timing etc.  SOMEONE PLEASE HELP HERE???

We have many posts about the countertop ovens...

My first choice was a Black & Decker but when I went back to get one they were all gone. So I have a Hamilton Beach and it's wonderful. It has convection but I tried using that and the vinyl got too hot too fast. So I just use bake (and make sure it's at the right temp!).

Look under the painting topic or elsewhere in misc chatter for more. :)

How did that work for you? I am spoiled by mine. I just did 3 babies last week. I like that I can fit one whole baby in at a time, so while 1 is baking I'm working on the next one. Mine shuts itself off when the timer dings! Nice safety feature.

They say it is best if you dont, but I have, some of the vinyl gives out toxic fumes so it needs to be well ventilated. Silicone is the worst. XXXXX June.

Rebekah, for more information on baking you dolls and ovens, please use our search feature at the top of the page. Just type in baking, or ovens, or anything like that. All the posts that have that info in them should come up so you can get some good answers.
And welcome to our family forum!

When you want to ask a question Squeekymouse, you have to start a new topic if you can't find it in search, then they will be underlined as on left side where yours aren't. The message on that side is only seen if someone else is on the computer at the same time. XXXXX June PS, make sure it is in correct section or it will be deleted or moved.

Hello Tina and welcome to our little family forum.

In answer to your oven question: sorry to say the answer is no hun. Microwaves do not cure the heat set paints. But you can use a Hamilton Beach countertop oven. Convection is also not supposed to be used, just the bake part. It makes the vinyl way too hot and it needs to be baked for the time & temp stated.

If you use the "search" feature at the top of the page, in the red bar, you can find out more on many oven discussions. Just put in your word (ex: oven, or baking, etc) and click on submit. It will give you all the threads with oven or whatever word you put in. Then you just search through them.

Tina, you would heat your oven to the proper temp before putting you doll parts in. Be absolutely sure you get an oven thermometer before you bake any babies. Even new ovens can be off in temp.
As far as glass beads, have you checked the Secrist website? They do offer them. You also have to be sure of the type of glass beads you use as some are not suitable because they contain some kind of powder for glass bead blasting. You can read all about that too if you search for the links. I personally use the poly pellets, especially when starting out.

You are very welcome Tina. I use the polypellets in the hands, feet, head, and the lower part of the body (tummy & tushy area) to weight my babies. I don't fill the limbs as I want them to feel natural. The rest of the limb is full of polyfill.
You can use any kind of hair you want on your reborn, it doesn't have to be mohair hun. I know someone who uses the hair from the salon after haircuts, and also the Sally Beauty Supply extensions and the like. One thing with human hair... it's usually pretty course for babies, and the rooting needles but you are certainly welcome to give it a go! Some also use llama hair, I have angora goat hair right on the hydes.
