Hi I need more help. I have the deluxe kit and have watched the video's, but my problem is they are not using the premixed paints. They are mixing there own, which brings me to where I need some answers please.
Second time today on here, that's bad !
I was sent the tutorial by Pat Secrist explaining how to use these paints with the video, ok that's fine, but they say not to use any odorless thinner except for the purple wash. Flesh 08 and flesh 07 are quite thick I thought it had to be really runny, even the veining colour is thicker than what they use in the video. I have check the other paints and they also are thick. Am I missing something??????
I don't want to start on my dolls until I find out these thing and I will probably be back here with more questions to come Glenda from New Zealand
I had the same experience and yes, you do need to use thinner for everything except the eyebrow paint, lip color and wrinkle and crease paint. Also, I have found that as a beginner, if I paint the first complexion coat on first and bake it, then if I make a mistake on the veining I can clean it off with the odorless paint thinner and do it over. If you paint the veins on the raw vinyl it is almost impossible to get off. Also, I mixed up a small amount of vein paint in a small jar so I don't have to mix it every time, just like the purple wash. Good luck and have fun! Sandy
Hello Glenda, I believe as Sandy sid you need to use some thinner, however there is a new paint set out now that Pat B was telling us about that does not require thinner only for the purple wash. I'm not sure which one you have, the ols premixed or the Authentic paints by Secrist. There is a sticky post about it. I have not tried it myself (can't wait to though) but if the sticky dosen't help, Pat B the moderator for the forum should be on sometime soon to help you out. You'll have to let us know how you make out.
You are right that the paint needs to be fairly runny. I do use thinner on all the paints except the brow, crease and wrinkle, and lip paints, just like Sandy. You do not need as much thinner as with regular Genesis paint, but you do need thinner, regardless of what Secrist says. I don't know what the new authentic paints are like, but the old ones definitely need thinner. If a paint really did not need thinner, I would not buy it. This would mean that it's already been thinned, and so you don't actually get as much paint as you think you would. A small bottle of regular Genesis, that is really concentrated, is more than a large jar of thinned paint. It may be easier for beginners to use the thinned paint, but there's not much to thinning paint. :) Good luck and let us know how it goes.

There may still be a little confusion going on about the paints. The original Genesis made for Secrist still need thinner. The new Authentic Reborn paints Secrist is now handling do not need thinner. You have to make sure of which ones you have so you know whether or not to use thinner. This is also where the test parts come in. When in doubt always use a test limb. Secrist sells them for $2 each I believe. I'd rather spend $2 on a test limb than to ruin a doll kit. Just test the paints with and without thinner and see which way you like them best. Also as Tina W said, look at the sticky of the paint tutorials in forum for more help :)
Hi Pat, I have a copy of that Tutorial, it was sent to me with the kit, but like I said the tiny pots of paint are quite thick. Probably the consistancy of Marmite or vegemite spreads. Far to thick not to be thinned down. On the lids of each little pots it says AUTHENTIC REBORN then what that is for then it says GENTLE TOUCH .... Flesh 08 and flesh 07 are too thick, definatly wouldn't go on doll properly. What would you suggest I do. thanks. Glenda
Thanks everyone for your suggestions.......... Glenda
PAT. I have re- read the tutorial and it definatly says add no thinner.. Then I went back to the videos and watched the CD that came with the beginner classroom DVD , not the one showing Pat Secrist but the one which I can print, I didn't read it all the way through because I thought it was excactly what the dvd was, only in written format.. But it was about using the premixed paints with the DVD. And going by that you do mix the petite premixed paints with odorless thinner. I have admit I'm getting quite confused, which one is right............... Glenda
According to Mr Secrist you would go with whatever it says on the printed sheet you got with your paints on using them with the dvd. If you are still having problems let me know and I will send a message to the office and see what they tell me. Sorry you are having difficulties.
Hi Pat, thanks for that, haven't been in here for a couple of weeks. Its all sorted now thanks. I nearly gave up there for awhile as I was getting so frustrated but in the end it all worked out. Just waiting for The "Hanna" kit to arrive and I will be busy again. Still have little "honey" kit to do but didn't want to work on her till things got sorted. Going into hospital next week so I will be able to rest up and do them both then. Thanks again. Glenda
Sorry to hear you are hospital bound (unless it's to fix something). Be very sure to stir your paints (any of them) before using. It will make a huge difference when you use them!
I see this was started several months ago, but I got my first flesh 08 gentle touch paint and I too, feel it is too thick. I tried to do exactly as instructed, but it is so sticky it looks like I painted my baby white. I really think it needs thinner or the jar is bad.. anyone else??? I mixed some darker flesh tone with it but still seemed to need thinner.. It dosent have the same consitancy as the blush and crease paints do...
I've had the same problem with some of the paints. It seems that the thinner sometimes leaks out during shipping. First, I make sure I really mix the paint well and if it is still too thick, I add just a DROP of thinner. That usually does the trick. Hope this helps! Melinda
Yes, I know sometimes there is clear leakage from the little containers. It would work just fine to do it like Melinda says. Just enough to get it back to normal. I had this too and had to do that and it worked fine for me too.
I can't begin to stress enough what Pat said about stirring. The more you stir, the more liquid the paints will become.

Genesis calls their paints "thixatropic" which they said means they are solid in the containers like oils but when stirred properly, they become very creamy and fluid like acrylics and easier to use. I ALWAYS stir my paints and it really makes a difference, not only in the use of them but also in the amount you need. I find I use less paint when stirred correctly :)
Oooohhhh Will do the stirring. I couldn't figure out why they would say it needs no thinner and then I'd have to buy thinner. When I receive it I will stir and see what happens. I see the majority of you say to stir so I'll try that first. Thank you all. How are you all? I hope the weather is kind to you Happy Tuesday! xxoo
No hun, it doesn't. Some use Loewl Cornell (sp?). Otherwise you CAN use the Genesis thinner. It comes in a jar just like the paints. Whatever thinner you use, make sure not to use more than 40% with your paints or it may not turn out right. That is straight from Genesis! :D
