I have done a few babies now but have never used the baby fat for weighting/stuffing, I have been a bit wary of it as I have heard it can damage the vinyl if it comes into contact with it. Before I started reborning I had never seen a reborn before and bought one off of ebay to get an idea of how they were made. Since I am now a lot more confident I decided to strip the baby down and re-reborn her as she isn't to my personal taste. She is a Brylee by Tamie Yarie. When I took her apart today she had baby fat in her. The baby fat was just sort of tossed in with a bag of glass beads and the fibre fill so it was all over the place and I had to sort it all out. My question is, Is this the correct way to use the baby fat pellets or should they be put into a little pouch of some sort like you do with the glass beads? If anybody who uses the baby fat pellets could advise me I would be very grateful. Thanks
Like Pat B said inone Post, she wouldn't use them as they may damage the vynal, I would toss them and use plastic pellets and glass beads with poly fill. I usually make a sack or use a stocking toput the pellets in and put the poly fill arround it so it cant be easyfelt. Hope this helps. XXXX June.
Thanks for thr reply. I do usually only use the glass beads in a little stocking and polyfill around it but I just wondered if the way in which it was sort of thrown in was how people do use it. After I had taken her apart there were a few things that I think were a bit slap happy about the way she was made. I think now that the person who made this doll is out to make some quick money, even though she looked nice on the outside, there seemed to be a few corners cut.
I've never used the baby fat myself but I have of people using it, they put the baby fat in a separate leak proof containment. I researched it a bit and found this was the suggested way of doing it to help prevent contact with the vinyl. I personally wouldn't use it.
Indeed my dear... IF one is to use the baby fat, it should not be thrown or sprinkled about in a haphazzard way. As the others said, it should be contained in some type of bag. It also should not come into contact whatsoever with any vinyl, vinyl/silicone mix, or silicone in general. I have seen the results of such, very ugly and nasty clean up and repair if it can even be done.
What reborners call baby fat was never intended by the manufacturer inside dolls, let alone inside their vinyl limbs. But should you decide to give them a whirl, be sure to put them in a bag and keep as far away from the vinyl parts as possible. Now, one thing that is not known to me is: what happens to the baby fat when it is enclosed in a bag with it's own kind? Maybe it has a reaction with itself. You know, like when you put a bunch of bananas in a bag and they work off the gasses of their own to ripen (or get rotten if you leave them together in there too long). Get my meaning?
But no, in answer to your initial question, they are not supposed to be just tossed in the body with other things and not contained.
Thank you all for your help. And yes Pat, I did wonder something similar about the baby fat reacting with itself because it is so sort of squishy. I think I will bin it and just use the pellets and poly fill when I get round to doing her again. She is a lovely kit though and I am really looking forward to reborning her to see how I can do with her. Thanks again ladies.
