Well, I've almost finished my first doll and thought I'd ask for opinions before I put her together!
I've really enjoyed everything, even the rooting which I'm not completely happy with, but I guess that's to be expected first time around.... anyway, here she is...
The rooting...
I used a #40 crown needle, but seemed to get around 4 hairs per hole so ended up with a thicker head of hair than planned, any advice on a better needle would be appreciated!
And the eyelashes - which I'd been dreading doing the most!!
Anything I should have done differently?? My husbands is the only opinion I have at the moment and he's obviously going to be diplomatic but I'd prefer honest opinions!!
Edit: I've used photobucket to upload the photo's, I hope thats ok??
My first doll was a disaster, I almost gave up straight away but I think your baby is really good. It took me a few attempts before I got anything nearly that good. She/he's very cute.
You have a lovely baby. You obviously put your heart into your work. Her coloring is really good, and your rooting is way better than my first attempt. Please show us when she is all together and in her Sunday best. She's going to be a stunner.
She is VERY good for your first. Some just naturally get it the first time. One of my students is on her 3rd doll and the first one was awesome, but the second not quite so good. Her rooting is getting way better.
I think your coloring and blushing is spot on. Might I suggest a very thin additional coat for the lips? Just to bring them up a little. Only other thing I saw was the beginning of the swirl. It's very hard to do and looks like you did a really good job on rooting except for the little spot to the right in the swirl. Unless it's just the way it shows in the pic.
Good job! Can't wait to see her finished.
One note: If you could go to the bottom of the page when you post, there is a box to check to upload pics. That way they aren't so big at first but we can click on them to make them larger. :)
Thanks... I noticed the upload boxes too late which is why I went back to add the bit about photobucket, wasn't sure if I could remove them and add them again but will make sure I use it in future!!
I will add another layer to the lips this afternoon, I've been looking at them myself and toying with the idea but you've given me the push I needed!! ;) - If I put a flannel covering the eyelashes as well will they be ok or should I pull them out and redo them after baking??
There are several things about the hair I'm not happy with, I'm just worried that if I start messing with it I'll make it worse so think I'll just settle for sticking a hat on this little one!!
Oh no! Your rooting looks good, it's just I noticed that one tiny little spot on the swirl because that's one part I have to concentrate on really hard when rooting my little ones. I don't think this head of hair needs a hat :o Personally, if it was me I'd just hit that spot with a few hairs, not do anything with the rest of the hair, it's good.
As far as the lashes, if you have rooted them don't worry about covering them in the oven, they should be just fine. It's just if people have glued on fake ones. Yours are rooted, ok.
I can't thank you all enough, just knowing I have a fall back for advice is worth a thousand dvds!!
I'll get some photo's taken of her once it brightens up a bit here (or I should say IF it brightens up here!)
And Buffington, I know exactly what you mean about the crown... I went back over that bit more times than I care to remember.... I can't believe how a tiny little area can cause so much trouble, but it hasn't put me off, I've already ordered myself a gorgeous Acorn kit and am now waiting impatiently for it to arrive!!
Yes, it can seem like it takes forever to get the hang of great rooting! I'm still perfecting mine! Oh ya, I forgot to tell you I think you did a really great job of rooting her eyelashes!
she is so cute you just want to hug her. I noticed on my first couple babies that after I got the swirl going it seemed as though it made a bald spot with the swirl around it and I had to go back in a fill it in. I'm not sure how I did it but on my 3rd and rest it didn't. I thought maybe it was from making too big a move when turning my head as I went caused it .
