how do u know ??

Hi all you lovely ladies,

so i was wondering how do you know when you are a 'good enough' reborn artist to sell your dolls... (sorry babies!) i dont want to sell all my dolls (babies) i create as i love them but as it is an expensive thing for me to do... i have no choice and there's soooooooo many sculpts i would love to try...  so the question here is and i am looking for all kinds of opinions... how do you know when your reborns are good enough to sell ?? (sorry in advance if this is in wrong section)

some people sell their very 1st dolls, so i think it depends on when you're ready. i think if you're satisfied with how your baby looks, then you could be ready to sell. i don't want to sell mine yet. once i make a doll that i would buy, that's when i'll start selling

i sold my first... for i think $157, then i had 3 go for about $250. the earliest baby i still have is my 6th - and really i should say my mum has, as i gave it to her for christmas (but i live with my folks right now so i kind of have her).

i guess if your feeling like your baby might be ready to be sold you list it and see how it goes.

i sold my first ones out of desperation really, christmas was only weeks away and after spending a great deal of the second 1/2 of last year in hospital i was dead broke. My first 7 babies were from the store bought 20" berrengers that i got $250 for a few of them is pretty amazing and i can only attribute that to the christmas demand. Sometimes i really regret that i don't have my first anymore- to be able to compare and see how far i've come.

i agree with what heartme has said, its when you think your ready to take the plunge. Really its about stepping out and taking the risk see what happens.

I will say this, it was some great advise i received from an experiance and regular high seller on ebay Aust. She told me it took her a good 6 months before she was regularly making decend money, it takes time to establish a name and attention. And i have to say it really has been true of myself - it was probably right on 6 ot 7 months before i myself saw any baby go for the $500-$600 - mostly it was in the $200 range with one or two in the 3's, a few fluctuations and then things suddenly took off. I still have bad sales at times though and have had a few go in the $200 range again lately but along side ones that go really well. Its always difficult to know whats going to be the popular baby. Sometimes i think *this* baby will go really well and it dives, while others i think are pretty run of the mill, end up my big sellers. You never really know.

you have to perserver is building a name though and its difficult at times to push though when you're only seeing low sales but you feel your baby is as good as someone's that goes for tripple the cost. And sometimes you even have a listing that gets no bid at all. It can be discouraging... all i know is that i don't want to do anything else, so i've held on and pushed though and its starting to finally pay off and my sales no longer go straight back into supplies. I've been going almost 9mths now, and things are going really well now. So my biggest advise is not to get too down when you have a bad sale week and to hang on through it all, it takes time to build your rep to get the biger spenders.

all the best

Actually, I think it takes a lot of confidence and courage to finally put a baby out there to sell.

The moment you offer something up for the public to buy or bid on, you are putting yourself and your craft out there to be judged. You are creating a permanent record of your work, forever being labeled, for good or for bad, by the artistry, creativity, and quality of the babies you offer for sale.

I have sold only one baby (to a friend for cost), and I've given all the others away as birthday and Christmas gifts. I really wish I had the confidence!  I'm not sure that I'll ever get there.  hmm

Could it be a factor of age? Would I have more spunk if I were younger and had "grown up" with the internet and e-bay?  weirdface

I encourage anyone with drive, hope, and confidence--Go for it! Feel good about yourself and your babies! Be proud of your work!  smile

And let us know how you do!   We're all rooting for you!  aww

perhapse there is a factor of age - being one of the younger ones who is confident with the internet and the digital world.

my babies have been one of the first things i have ever had any confidence about... i'm a very shy, quiet person. when asked in the past to ever list things i'm good at my list would pretty much always remain bare... my list of my weekness', shortcomming and failuers however could have always gone on for pages.

i came across reborning by accident - but instantly i was like "i could do that" and about 2 or 3 weeks later my very first was "born" and i've never looked back.

i've always been artistic and creative, but i never showed any of my work off... it was an intrest and hobby but i never thought much of what i'd produced... it still boggles my mind how i ever decided i could do this and that i've been proud enough of my work to put it out there.

I'm a perfectionist... and in the past nothing has ever been "good enough" -- no matter what family or friends have expressed. its a wonder my babies haven't been relagated to this same judgment and been hidden away by my over critical self.

instead i feel a sense of pride - somewhat a very new experiance for me!!! i do think my work in good, i can hold my work up besides other people and not pick holes in my own, but think "yep, i'm as good as she is".

this being such a new feeling for me, its difficult at times not to feel almost guilty for feeling proud, or to worry that maybe i'm "full of myself". Even though these worry's to creep up at times... or often, i still can believe in my abilities and know deep down that i'm not just "blowing my own horn" but that i really do have something special here.

what can i say... i feel like *this* is my "calling" (if we each have sucha thing)... and though it sounds dorky... i was "born to reborn" ***LOL***

You do have something special, Naomi, and it's not only in your beautiful babies but also in your sensitive, fun, caring personality.

I'm THRILLED that creating these babies has given you a sense of pride, joy, accomplishment, and confidence.  You should feel everyone one of those qualities.  There is no doubt that your babies are beautiful, and you instinctively know how to create them.  Just look at how short a period of time it's been since you began!  That's incredible!

I love following your work and seeing every little baby you create!

Thanks so much for sharing!  aww

thank you for sharing all of your personal feelings on this ... i really dont want to sell reborn babies... as i started this as a hobby for now until i get more 'free time' to do more of a career... it seems way competitive selling babies at times...

BUT reborning is expensive (for me) and only having to sell a couple to keep my hobby going...

so i am only wanting to sell a few in between keeping a few (hope this makes sense) ... then i think well at that rate i wont be building a name at all ... =(

I feel the same as you Naomi that i finally feel i belong somehow to all of this... i have never felt this way about any career, course or well anything in my life !!!

and i love you guys... =) all of the support, reborn spirit, you ladies have kept me reborning ... without all of your help + guidance, i wouldn't still be reborning today and i am forever grateful so dont forget it !!!

** totally emotional today =) **

I appreciate everyone's opinions... i guess you dont know how good your babies are until people bid but I understand what you say Naomi it may just be a certain sculpt or look or financial time that influences bids etc...

thank you for sharing, its very interesting to know what everyone thinks / feels...

And Nai Nai.... i am young and i am still finding it very difficult to learn doing these templates lolol... *Oh Dear* =)

Love to all ~ Kaz ~

reborning is an expensive hobby, something i wouldn't have been able to afford to continue were it not for selling.

its also terribly addictive so selling is often a way simply to "feed the habbit" LOL

Also if it were not for selling my house would be chock-full of babies with about 76 babies now done!!! And i still have about 10 babies around at any given time, and sometimes find it hard finding places for them all. I've only got 6 permanate one's i keep the others rotate and i enjoy each one for a little time before its off to its new home and new forever mummy.

but seriously i can't stop!!! the only time i've ever gone a full day without doing some work is when i've been out of supplies and impatiently waiting on the post delivery.

Step out and give it a shot Kaz, your babies are darling so i'm sure you'll get some sales to keep you going.

Kaz, maybe it has nothing to do with age. Maybe it's just developing the confidence to take a chance and give it a try. I guess with everything that you try in life, there has to be a first time! Sometimes I think that when I was younger, I was more naive and just didn't know enough to worry! Does that sound silly?

But I appreciate your saying that you're young and it's still difficult, because maybe I'm just using my age as an excuse!

So, I'm off to see the Wizard to get me some courage! eyepopping.gif

It can be realy expensive, Especially if you are on a tight budget. Tamatoe Jam sold both her dolls for $100 plus the postage and handling, as I'd bought a lot of them before I found out where to get the Secrists kits and Elly knoops kits from. But she made a small profit and it helped out with a few other bills. So it proves that if you have something to sell and can get it out there, you could have a buyer and then you can replace what you have sold and have a bit left over for the next one.weirdfaceJune M from Oz

Thanks for understanding me + talking me through this =)

i am going to sell one of my creations eventually, when i can finally let go of one of them =)

arrrrrrhhhh i am so terrible arent i ... just BABYCRAZY!!!!

i think when i finally list one i'll be a nervous wreck but you are right you have to be brave + always do a 'first time' =) plus i have to learn to navigate those templates first !!!

does a template make a huge difference in a sale? Also can you put a reserve price on your babies listing or is it best to start lower ?

Rosemarie... somedays i feel tooo old and wise.... lol then i have days where i feel young + silly lolol
Rosemarie... (sorry in other posts calling u nai nai... i didnt see your name - Rosemarie on the bottom of your messages - i know now)

Kaz, I am "nai nai!" smile

My son married a beautiful girl from China, and they have a little boy, my beautiful grandson, who will be 5 years old on Tuesday, August 26th. His name is Gerard Joseph, but we call him Gerry. Since Gerry is Chinese as well as American, I had hoped that he might call me by the Chinese name for "Grandma" which is "nai nai," and he does!

So, it's okay if anyone calls me "nai nai!" I named my nursery because of my beloved, little, precious Gerry, and I'm so honored to answer to that name! I love it! heart.gif

Thank you for making me smile! aww

i didn't use a template on my first babies, i think the thing that makes the biggest difference is your photographic poseing and composition... the more realistic the poses and lovely settings the more attention your baby is going to receive.

I'd suggest you start practising with photographing, study other well know reborn artists photographs and try to emulate a simalar look and feel.

Dont use the ebay upload for the photos as you'll only get a few and they are thoes little ones you have to click on to get a bigger view... also you pay for each of these... intead you'll want to upload to a photobucket and then [img] code them into your listing.

I use templatemate for my template, where i pay $7 per month... however there are others who do templates for less or a one off purchase price... i should really change over this but i'm so attached to the graphics and colours of the one i use now and Templatemate did customise some of the features in the template i use just for me and $7 per months not such a big deal.... but i do know other people sell the rights to use their template for unlimited time and listings for a one off payment of about $10.

I don't know how to use HTML, so this is all done by the template desinger and what you get is really a copy and past template which you can put all your photos and info into and then it will generate the HTML code for your to copy and paste into the ebay listing.

A template doesn't matter as much as the photo quality and composition though and ebay does have a few page themes and boarders you can use instead o still mkae your listing a little pretty. I think one of the main drawcards of the template is to create a consistant look, people open your listing and see the same layout and graphics it jults their memory to other baby's of yours they have viewed in the past. It can be difficult to remember all the names of people they have looked at esp if they view alot of the different listings, the template creates a personalised stationery that provides a visual reminder to the viewer of other babies of yours they have also looked at. So i guess this is more a "shop front" thing that makes more of a difference to those that sell frequently like myself than thoes who only offer up a baby every other month or so.

finally i'm going to stress again... the biggest selling factor will be your photographic composition. SO get a memory card for your camera so you can take lots of pics at a time and practise and practise. Take a few hundrend... upload and look at your shots with a critical eye comparing your look and feel to the successful sellers... clear your camera and shoot again... and again till you feel confident in your photographic abilities. Play around with the different features on your camera that you may not have even looked at before now.

I started selling before my photographic skills were really there, and have learnt as i went along. but if you have the time put in some practise shoots first. It really can have a world of difference in the sale potential of your babies.

tasy id be happy to make up the template graphics for you hun I used to use what they call robshelp.com and photo bucket it took a while to learn but it is easy once you know how best of all its all free, you can use your own graphics etc and if you get really stuck i can go into your account for you and set it up so all you need to do is add your pictures of your baby, i had a freind help me till i learnt the code etc to do it all alone, now i do my own html etc. a template in my opinion makes a big difference it adds to the profesionalism of your auction and can really make your baby photos stand out alot more. As for when is the right time to sell well you simply do what they call the shopping test you take your little bub shopping if people really mistake it for a newborn baby its time to sell, i started that way but only after a year of reborning and i must admit i do this with every single baby i make, if the baby doesnt fool somone i simply strip it back and re do it until it does, photography can make a reborn look real but geting people opinions seeing it in real life for me is a better judgment I know then that it really does look real if that make sense hope this helps ya hun (((hugs)))

PS: you cant add a reserve on your baby on ebay.com.au but you can if yous ell it on ebay.com

Hi I agree that it depends when you feel you are ready to sell your babies. I still dont sell mine and I have done quite a few. I dont sell them as I do not think they are good enough to sell so just keep going really until I am happy and maybe a bit more confident lol. I am a bit of a perfectionist too and want it all perfect, will take me a while though to get it right. Have you got a pic?
