I tried a Berenguer baby from Walmart for my first. I tried to give her that newborn "cheesy" look. I haven't rooted the hair yet and I am a little worried about that after some of the posts I have read. She might stay bald if I start breaking needles.
She's an adorable baby! Got any pictures without her passy? As to the rooting: I too started with a Berenguer from Walmart, and rooting is hard, however I only broke 3 needles. I had to put her in the oven every half hour or so on Warm (something less than 200 degrees) for about 6 minutes. Then rooting was okay, though still not great. It does take forever, but the results are impressive. On such a lovely baby, I would say give it a try. If you hate it, there's always wigs. :) Again, gorgeous baby. Enjoy her!

Maybe I can help you with that. You can heat hard heads using a "rice sock". You take an old or cheap sock and fill it with about a cup full of uncooked cheap rice (not the 5 minute kind). Tie the end in a loose knot. Put it in the microwave for about 10 - 17 secs. Or until it is fairly warm but not too hot to handle. You don't want the rice to start burning. stuff it inside the head and it will soften the vinyl. While you work on the warm side the bag can lay on the other warming it. When it no longer warms the vinyl pop it back in the microwave. Through time it will sorch just toss out the old and put in new. Another trick is using a heating pad...again not hot...warm the head.
Depending on the needle size you use for it...work very slowly and at about a 45 degree angle. Don't force it and don't rush. Your needles will last longer and so will your fingers! Hope this helps!
Your baby looks beautifull, as for baeenguars, they are hard to root, but as Judie said, a rice sack in the microwave does help, I think you can use a Wheat sack too, Where I did my first 2, she said to heat them for 3 minutes, so that what i do. I use a wooden spoon handle to push it into the head. That way you dont get your fingers burnt. P.S. With the berenguars if you dont sand their head you need to cover it more with mohair, I think my first took about 6 hrs. I thin.k Mo used a wig for her first baby, thats a possibility.June M from Oz. By the way . welcome to the forum.
She is a cutie! You did a good job. Rooting is one of those things you just have to jump into. My first two were Berenuger dolls and they wear hats now! ALL the time. Their hair is awful. But by the time I got to my third doll (and higher quality mohair) I started making babies that didn't need hats! Although I still do love them!
