I have read about dolls that can help people with late stage Alzheimer and other dementia related diseases....
And since I´m the daughter of a young woman that got Alzheimer at the age of 57 (is 67 today) I´m very interested in knowing some more about this!!!
I think that a doll would give my mother some pleasure... she has been very active with her grandchildren (she has 12 of them and I´m responsable for 6 of them!!) My youngest babydaughter, doesn´t know her grandmother... and this breaks my heart!!! She will never know how wonderful she was and how much she would have loved her if she was here in both mind and body... I can still see how her eyes light up when she looks at a baby... but it is not safe anymore to let her hold them.... we had some accidents when the situation got outof hand when she felt threthened when we tried to take the baby back... this is a normal reaktion to protect the baby ofcource! And she does it just fine! ;0) To my mother who nolonger knows us all the time nor have her speach... could this babydoll give her some joy???
this might be one of the reasons that I want to learn how to sculpt and paint babies.... My other reason is that I have 6 children and will not have any more... and I think this is a way to moarn the fact that I will never be holding an own newborn baby in my arms again... this chapter of my life is written and read.... So I find it peaceful and soothing to create... hmmm ok I´m a newbie so they come out as alians and other strange creatures..... but i hope to someday be able to sculpt a baby that looks like a baby and not a monster ;0) like to see my first attempt??? an elf or something.... hmmm Gollum???? with a lizards back!!! But I think I can get there someday or what do you think??? So if you know where I can read or get to know more about the theraputic gains of the dolls for Dementia patients I would be very happy....
(your picture has been deleted per the terms of the use of forum. You may post links only (except for the Artist Showcase)) Thanks,
Welcome to the forum! I think your little elf sculpt is very cute, but I should probably tell you that we are only allowed to post photos in the Artist Showcase section of the forum, so be sure to post the rest of your pics there.
I am not sure where you can read more about the benefits of therapy dolls, but I can personally attest to how comforting the dolls can be after the loss of a child. If you want to buy a reborn for your mother, you can purchase one from me or probably any of the other artists on here. If you want to make one for your mother, we will all be happy to give you any advice that you need.
I've just started a very new venture where i'm using 10% of all my baby sales to make donation babies for dementia care units and childrens oncology units.
www.preciouslullabies.com - see the "donation babies" link.
My first donation therapy baby is going to Davis House (a dementia care unit) here in Perth western australia. I'm going to be delivering her there this coming friday (15th aug) - the staff have invited me to morning tea to meet them and some of their clients. They're all over the moon to be receiving my very first little blessing.

I think you've done well with your first sculpt... esp when you have photographed it in the garden. Looks really like a little garden gollum.
welcome to the forum and all the best with developing your sculpting skills. There arn't a great many sculptors here, mostly reborn artists who bring other peoples sculpted kits to life with painting them and hand rooting the hair ect. You might be interested in looking into this side of the creation process too.
Hi Misha i belive alzheimer's desease and reborn babies is still being studied I do know that they have found people with alzheimer's had a better concerntration span when looking at baby photos they also seemed less confused and more focused, I belive babies bring a little of the past back to them and in turn helps relax them more, some studies have shown that when they are holding a reborn baby they are very calm and also very happy you could try to do a search i havent found much information available on the internet what i know i have been told by the carers at the old age homes here I donate my babies to, as far as im concerned any little thing we can do to help these lovely people is worth doing and even if its only a small differnce it makes when they are holding a reborn its worth every min of my time when making one for them :) hope this helps (((hugs)))

Hello Mischa, Welcome to the forum, I,m not up on Alzheimers, but know from my sisters mother-in-laws, mum that baby dolls no matter what kind were welcomed to give to the elderly, as it did bring back some of their nurturing and sooth them. You could do what my sister and I used to do, is make one for a raffle and then in turn , they could buy a number of soft babies for a few instead of sharing. June M from Oz.
By the way, I love your sculpture, Doll making in itself is a therapy, while you are creating you are forgeting all the other problems life has to throw at us.June M from Oz.
I found the same when I worked at a Parkinson's daycare center for my internship for college a few years ago. We even had men, who were basically unresponsive, but when shown or handed a reborn, they just lit up and were very gentle and caring. It was an awesome site. I did have one guy that wasn't sure about giving her back to me though. But they do really change when little ones are involved. You may want to google to find a national alzheimers foundation and get some info there.
Best of luck and bless you (and all of you) for helping people in need :)
