SO sad. I melted Sera :(
Permalink

cryI am so up-set! I purchased an oven grill over the weekend so that I oculd heat set my dolls paint in a place away from my family. Those fumes are shocking!! I placed a Sera head in the oven for about 8 minutes on 120 degrees c and when I came back to get her out she had melted!! She was going to be a present for my daughter who's b'day is in a months time :(

Is it possible to buy just a head from somewhere? The dolls arms and legs are fine I just need a head and don't want to pay another 95 bucks for another kit if I can avoid it.

Not happy, Jan!!furious

You can buy just a head from Secrist... you may find that your oven was too hot... I believe the temp. should have been 165 degrees f., not celcius... Shy Whistler

You might try Ebay. Sometimes people sell just the head.

Oh no... check with Bountiful Baby, they do sell the heads and limbs seperatly ... I'm assumeing you mean Sera by marissa may? BB are the distributor of this sculpt. So don't worry, you can just get a replacement head from her.

I use a little benchtop convection oven... the reason your head melted, from the sounds of things is that you had the top elements on. these radiate far too much heat without enough clearance between these and your head... your limbs were ok as they had more clearance between them and the elements above.

You CAN successfully and safely use a portable/benchtop/toaster oven, but you need one that allows you to chose different heat options. One where you can select to only use the lower/bottom heating ellements and not use the top ones at all.

I use a Pronto Convection oven that has a 22L copasity which give enough room for even the bigger sculpt heads on the market. It also has different cook settings such as: bake, grill etc - i use the bake setting which turns off the above elements and heats only from below. http://www.breville.com.au/products_detail.asp?prod=356

I use the middle rack so that my tray etc doesn't over heat from being too close to the bottom element - if the tray heats to a temp hotter than the actual oven temp it could cause melting also. I use an alliminuim tray, on which i've then put the grilling tray (the tray with the second one that sits above with the little holes in it... meant to allow the fat in meat to drain away while cooking... i use this to allow for air to circulate under my sculpt). i then use fabric - an old pillow case or simalar, folded to double or tripple thickness - this protects your vinyl pieces from the metal tray. I cook at 120(C) for 10mins. And its fantastic.

I only used the kitchen oven for my 1st 2 babies.

I've used my Pronto ever since... and while the secrist kits are non-toxic, other brands are silicone/vinyl mix and can actually release some awful fumes when cooking. My pronto has ever only been used for my baby cooking, and you'd be amazing by the greezy/oily film that does build up on the glass door. I'd hate to think what would or could be going into food if i were using my families oven.

--------

Sorry to hear you had such an unfortunate go with your Sera .... how badly effected was she??? Its a kit that has silicone in it so i can imagine it could have melted terribly. But like i said BB do have an option where you can order just her head instead of a whole other kit and i think they're around the $20 mark or there abouts.
