My very first bub - reborn from a old berenguer that i got from a garage sale, she was completed on the 2nd Dec 2007

I only have her certificate pictures as i lost all her other pics when my old computer crashed. cry

and can you believe... i didn't keep my very first baby... i sold her weirdface ... i'm still not sure if i regret this... or what i really think, crazy... who sells their first attempt??

The earliest baby that i made that is still in my possession is baby #6 - who incidently i gave my mother for christmas... so between the 2nd of dec and christmas i'd managaed to already do 6 babies. I didn't even know wha a reborn was untill the very end of November when i found them on ebay by accident. I'd never heard of them or seen anything like them. But i was taken at first glance.

I was in awe, and would have loved to by one for my mother for christmas - but didn't have that kind of money... i then stopped and actually read one of the listings i was looking at and thats when i realised these were hand crafted, not factory produced collector dolls but works of art... I was even more taken with them.

I went and googled, read up about the hows and the supplies. and within days i had supplies - a $5 doll from a garage sale down the street, a small sample tray of genesis paints and a secrest "the art of newborning" DVD. I got a set of eyes and mohair from a local "doll doctor" who mostly restors vintage dolls.

I watched the DVD once (dare i say... not even all the way through the second disk... oops yet another guilty confession cry seriously i really do value secrist products though... the DVD's are excellent and i always recommend them to others... i'm just one of those odd ppl who learns quickly and can follow a general idea - play around and figuer it out for myself), and set to work.

about a week later this little girl was "born" -- and a serious addiction and obsession was already formed LOL ... i've not stopped since

~*~

So how did you find reborning and get strated??? would love to hear how others addiction to these babys developed biggrin

That one is really cute. You did a nice job on her.

I Started 18 years ago with the Apple Valley Dolls by Pat Secrist (I'm still a dealer!) and then about 5-6 years ago I was at a doll show and saw some people using people makeup and inks on dolls. So I talked to them, came home an googled and then I was hooked!

My first doll I newborned was a 22" Guppy from Apple Valley. We could get them in blank vinyl so I did. I still have her (just couldn't bear to give up my first (new)born! So she sits in judgment of all the ones I have done since (because she is the eldest) lol. Back then all the "reborns" were done with the "peaches n cream" skin.

Then when Pat started his Secrist Dolls sister company, I just jumped right in! My first Secrist doll was a Corey with 3/4 limbs as he was the first face in the line (I think, it's been so long) and that is what he was offered with.

I didn't know about rooting though till about 4 years ago so all mine had cute wigs up until then!

I have a history of all the dolls I've reborned and the sculpts I've newborned in another post on this forum. I do have a few to add, though that I just finished.

How I got started:

I have loved dolls since I can remember. When I was about 12 my mom decided I was too old for them so that was the end of getting them. When I was in my twenties I started collecting the dolls that were put out by Mattel etc. that went with the children's animated movies. I had a bunch of those but they sat in a box for a long time. Then, I discovered a pattern for Betsy McCall (14") in the McCall pattern book. I bought the pattern and then bought the doll! So I started collecting dolls again. I have Betsy, Dru, Jane, & Barbara. I made clothes for them. The only thing was that since I don't actually play with them it didn't hold my attention for a terribly long time. In the meanwhile I sold all my movie dolls (that had been in boxes for several years) on ebay. I went on to buy Tyler Wentworth and Marley Wentworth and made clothes for them. Then I bought baby Ellery by Kish. I haven't made her anything. I also bought the 4 Season Dolls by Kish. I also purchased patterns (from ebay) and made clothes for them. During this time in my ebay surfing I discovered reborning and eventually newborning. Better than to make my dolls clothes was to make my dolls! I "studied" for about 18 months and then took the plunge. I've been painting for less than a year. I think I painted my first with GHSP back in September of '07. In August or earlier in September I reborned in the old-fashioned way. And now, here I am!

weirdfaceMy first love of dolls started when I was about 4. She was a sawdust and glue type, my Mum knitted her a full pink outfit in feather and fan pattern. I didn,t have her very long because I was playing in the front yard, with my new dolly and tin pram, went inside to get some thing to eat, when i came back she,d been stolen. My next and only doll was a Pedigree. I still have her. My youngest daughter wanted a doll collection, so I bought her a couple, while shopping in a new centre ,I saw tis doll in the window and went to check her out ,It was Sugar Britches, and at $300 back then ,I couldn,t afford her. The shop owner came over to help and said she was hand crafted and that they did lessons, 1987 I started with a Tiny Babe and a Bye Lo, I wasn,t found of old fashioned dolls and wanted to do more modern and realistic babies and children. So thats when I started. I started making Shay Donna Ru Berts and made her for a raffle for Ronald Mc Donald House, thats a place you can stay when you have very sick children in hospital. She was such a hit ,They made $1200. Like everyone here on the forum ,I just stumbled over the reborns. But again couldn,t afford to buy one.weirdfaceJune M from Oz
