Thanks for the vote of confidence Dee. I won't give up, I just feel discouraged right now blankstare I'm thinking about trying to get another head from BB, maybe a different face even. If that's possible...I'm going to check it out. There is still soooooo much I don't know about this art, I'm always searching the forum wink

You are very welcome I have been reborning for 4 years and I am constantly searching for new ideas, when I get discouraged I just put it away and do something else I may not come back to it for weeks.

Awww Danielle I know your paincry A similar thing happened to me recently when my cat ate the hair off my baby's head and left holes. I too tried the boiling water and ice thing and it helped although you could still see some holes.no

I wouldn't fret about your baby. The coloring is very good! The hands and legs are very realistic too. You've done a good job matching your baby skintone to your own. Buying another head is a good idea but I would be worried that I couldn't match the head to the limbs?? I don't know have you considered a wig? I haven't used one to be honest but it's just an idea. Maybe ask around here and see if anyone has used one and how it turned out. You did such a wonderful job it would be nice to keep the head you have.

We all have those days so don't feel so bad. Like honeyloves said take a day off to breathe and think about it.

Ladies thanks for the compliments on my babies aww  I have had the worst time with the Kyle kit. The color correction is so tedious but I kept it up and he's almost finished painting. The Kate kit is finished, and tomorrow I hope to go into "labor" smile and give birth. I tried to make Kyle an AA baby but just can't seem to get him dark enough. You'll see when I take some pics of him. I had to stop for tonight because I was getting so annoyed that he wasn't dark enough I think I messed up his eyebrows. Oh well, he has them now. They're set.hmm

Kate, I took a couple pics of and am posting them here. I have two of her head and one of her hand and foot completed. I bought new needles and hate that I can see her holes. I also bought mohair from BB because I didn't want to wait forever from SL and well.....whatever. I just wanted her to look nice since I made her as a gift for a friend.

Let me know what you think....

Danielle, I say we pour ourselves a glass of wine and relax eh? Anyone want to join?? smile

Thank you so much I appreciate that smile  her lips are pretty shiny. I didn't want them that shiny but looking at them in the pic that are okay. Thanks Dee your comment made me take a second lookaww

As for her hair from the Mohair Rooting tech. thread, here is a pic of her hair dry and then wet. What would you suggest I use??

As you will see she is pretty plugged uphmm  I was disappointed in my rooting this time out I would think that with the easier time I had with the rice sock that I would have done a better job.

Emily, thank you so much for your lovely comments aww I have been taking a "time out" from reborning right now. With that being said, my mind does keep going back to it and what I could have done differently.....I also did order another doll head, new needles, and hair in a lighter shade. One of the problems I have been reading about when rooting with darker hair colors can be plugs, so I decided that maybe for a newbie rooter like me a lighter shade might be a better way to go. For the head this time I went with another BB sculpt, Lily. I decided this after a lot of thought because I have never been overly thrilled with Paisley's features. It should be okay for matching colors because the vinyl is the same color, and she is sculpted by Denise Pratt again. I did the limbs a bit later than the head on Paisley, and it was okay as far as matching colors.

I do appreciate your advice about a wig, but I just can't stand the idea of one wink I also just really want to get the hang of rooting so bad! I think I will use Paisley's head for practice techniques now. That way I won't ruin another finished painted head hopefully.

I've gotta say that I think your rooting job looks great to me. I have looked around at a lot of brown haired reborn dolls, and most of them have some plugged look. I myself have very dark brown hair, and you can see where the hair follicle goes into my head too. Dark colors are just going to look less real I think unless you root them more full. Some may disagree with me on this, but it's my opinion. My oldest son was born with a mob of dark brown hair on his head! The only baby in our family to ever have had that. Of course most of it fell out and came in lighter later.....

Well, at any rate we need to know that this is all a work in progress. No need to beat ourselves up over our mistakes.

Oh and Emily Kate is adorable in the little green hat. So very sweet. Happy laboring wink

lol Thanks ladies so much, I put the hat on her so she wouldn't look like a "floating" head. Yes we are works in progress and get better as we go along. I know what you mean about the dark hair looking plugged no matter what.  I have finished painting Kyle and have black curly hair for him but for some reason I just can't pull myself to root it. I think it is too stark a contrast. I did a few and then took them out.....confuse

His is going to be an AA baby so I wanted black curly hair....but...... the middle pic he looks like a guy with a bad hair piece lol

I love the black hair. Makes him look like one of Will Smith's kids, and I think that man and his family are beautiful! :) (and just for the record, I'm white!)

Here's my latest WIP -- an Esme by Didy Jacobsen:

The rooting has gone really well, though I still need practice with hairlines. I can't decide if the eyelashes are a teensy bit too long...

Thank you! It's suri alpaca fiber from Suri Hill -- great stuff. I just ordered another 2 ounces. (I'll post or PM the link if you're interested. I'm new here and I don't remember the link policies at the moment.)

Hoping to have Esme assembled today...

Emily, Kyle is so cute. For the record I do think he will look really sweet with dark hair, it's the way to go wink I love dark hair on babies, and do plan to make one with dark hair in the future when my rooting gets better.

Ashley, good luck with your latest find. I hope you get some paint soon.smile

Sarahelizabethii, your rooting is gorgeous. I hope I can learn to be that good. My little 5 year old daughter commented on what a cute baby your Esme is, she just loved her wink

Thank you Danielle. I expected to hate rooting, but I'm surprised by how much I enjoy it. I'm thinking about offering rates to do custom rooting. I'm not as artful as Lisa at Precious Newborns, but my work seems to be capable and consistent.

Here's Esme all finished. The lighting is crummy tonight, but I don't want to wait to share:

She's turned into the cutest little peanut. I didn't realize how petite she was going to be, but I love how she just curves into the crook of your arm. Elsie goes on etsy.com tomorrow -- PM me for a coupon code to save $25.

Ashley -- I like the tripod/drying rack idea!

edited to add:
Just realized I probably should have posted this in the completed babies thread -- sorry, I'm new here!

I just figured out I PUT THE WRONG LEGS ON MY ESMEE.

She came jumbled together with a Rolanda Heimer Lilly-May and I mismatched the limbs.  The finished Esmee photos on LDC don't show her legs at all. NUTS.

Hello, well I've decided to go with the black hair. I've just finished rooting and did the eyelashes. I can't comment on him right now because he looks like a mess. His seal is drying as I type. Liselle love the Will Smith comment!!!! LOL so funny! I like him and his daughter, not the wife or son. I've always disliked the wife and the son is too obnoxious for me. Great and talented little actor but the attitude is too much I think.

Thank you ladies for the advice it helped me decide to take a chance and go dark.

My my the pretty babies! sarahelizabethii your Esmee came out so cute!! she is well done and the rooting is awesome! I love the mottling you did on her cheeks, looks so real.

Honeyloves the baby is a nice one, can't wait to see you get started on her aww

Sage thanks for the heads up, I just picked up some 46g's from HB because DD is giving me a hard time. This is the second time I tried to order from them and it won't accept the order. I order from everyone else and have no problem. This weekend I placed orders with three different places and no prob. DD said I was locked out of my account, then denied the payment. I emailed her and she said there was no lockout but for whatever reason I can't place an order with them. Oh well, they missed out on a good one this time. You know BB is having great deals on the kits. Last I checked they were $20 amd $39.99 for some cuties. I hated the last batch (color of the vinyl) so I'm trying someone new this time.

I wish I had the guts to do an open mouth baby. Not yet cry

I have my Kyle soon to be Myles's hair rooted. Man, he was a matted mess when I was done. I rooted the hair long because I'm hoping it'll curl but the hair stuck together. Here are a couple pics of his hair when I combed it out. Before and After I trimmed his hair.

Thanks Emily. After a year of practice I feel like I'm just now getting to a point where:
A) the mottling actually shows up, and
B) I can generally predict what the next layer of paint is going to look like

You do a killer hairline -- hairlines are my weakness.

Looking good, can't wait to see him finished, I use a hair net on the part that I have rooted that keeps it from geting tangled.

I use a couple cosmetic sponges that I've picked holes in with tweezers. One has big holes, and the other has smaller ones. For Sofie's mottling I think I used a combo of pyrrole red, burnt umber, and raw sienna. It was too intense at first, so there were a lot of flesh layers to tone it down. Also a lot of raw sienna washes to warm up the vinyl.

Tempted to add just a little more blushing to her nose and cheeks before I tackle the eyebrows. Opinions?

I too am working on another baby....this sculpt is Kelzie. I tried something different with this one but can't seem to warm up the tone confuse  I'm thinking a thin layer of yellow orche maybe?? What do you think? I feel if I use anything with red or pink it'll be too much.

Thanks Emily.

As for your Kelzie, I've lately turned into a big believer in the warm wash. I used 2-3 layers of raw sienna on Lilly-May. (Can't remember if raw sienna is lighter or darker than yellow ochre.)

Hey Emily, sometimes those green washes will just help so much to add realism that it's amazing to me. I think if you just sort of play with it and mix it with some flesh it can work wonders that way too.

Your baby is looking great, and I look forward to seeing the finishing touches not to mention the finished baby. Happy finishing aww
