Hi!! Thank you both for the suggestions, they'll be well used! I am attaching a picture of the baby's face (full front). I have had some problems trying to include attachments, so I'll just post the picture below. Thanks again for the pointers!! Cherie :0)
Oh my, what a disaster this weekend - my baby's head melted!
I've used my oven in the past with premie heads & limbs with no problems but this is the first time I've tried a larger head (the Acorn sculpt). Maybe I should have baked limbs first and then the head so I could have centered in the oven more. There seemed to be plenty of room for all of it...
Also, I had read that you should bake the internal purple wash for 10 minutes instead of the 8 - was this correct? I also had my oven thermometer that said I was at the correct temp. Any ideas?
Has anyone else done this? Seems a very costly mistake but I will be ordering more supplies from Secrist & give Acorn another chance.
Hi All!! I like my first baby more than the one you are all helping me with. I don't know if it's the sculpt that seemed to make her easier to paint but I seemed to get a better result w/her. She is below... Going back to the baby that needs more work, she has been partially rooted. The quality of the mohair is about as good as it's possible to get. Is it safe to bake her one more time with the mohair attached? I'm assuming you'd just wrap a kitchen towel around the top of her head. Am I right? :0 / Cherie
Hi, Yes I`ve put a few baby heads in the oven with hair on them ..just wrap a damp towl around the head, you shouldn`t have any problems...I like your babies .they are very cute
I've baked mohair as well, I just spray some leave on conditioner on the mohair before I rebake. Turned out fine. I think you babies are adorable as well. Good luck!
I would make her lips darker. I suggest trying Secrist's premixed "lip" paint. Infact I don't think I'd use anything but Secrist Premixed Reborn Paints. They make the process so much easier. I've only finished two dolls myself and to be honest, if I didn't have the premixed set of paints I don't know if I would have gotten the same results.
Joan, Yes your right, the internal wash should be baked longer. I think we've all melted a baby at some point don't give up on her you can alway purchase another head if you like or just finish her with a boo boo. In any case good luck with her and let us know how you make out. Love to see the finished babe!
May I suggest finding a different image place to keep your pics? I clicked on Paddy's pic (it was the one in the 7th post and I clicked on the pic) and when it opened in imageshack, there was some pornography on the page too (not yours, I think someone elses) with a nude young man and all his glory hanging out!!! I reported that photo as porn. There were some other peoples pics there too but it just shocked the you know what out of me to see your baby's pic on the same page as pornography! Just giving you an FYI. When I clicked on the other baby's pic it actually went to a photo album page, but not the Paddy one.

hehehe ya! He wasn't my idea of somebody's dolly! Yup, got the surprise of my life, you betcha. I'm sure Cherie wasn't aware of that one when she put her pic on there. I agree, it's gotten so bad all over! But what I can't figure out is why 1 pic does that and not the others. :o
My 3rd baby. Any comments/critiques are more than welcome!! I'm also having problems toning down pink (bountigul baby) vinyl. They're vinyl isn't very forgiving, seems like once the paint hits the vinyl it's there for life. right now I'm using the basic (Secrist Reborn) pre-mixed paint set so my options are a bit limited. I'm thinking maybe I should buy the flesh tone set. Any thoughts or suggestions would be awesome!!
Oh my God!!!!! I don't have any porn on my computer! That's scary! Ok, I'm not going to use photoshack to store my pictures anymore! Please send me the link (to my email address cmiller415@gmail.com) that led you to the picture so I can research where it came from. It really is scary because I am the only one who uses this computer and I've never een been to a porn site. I guess this is a goodd "beware!!" to everyone. I am so sorry! Cherie
Don't worry the porn is not on your computer! It is on the net, it creeps through all the cracks and spoils loveley sites. You Sam are beautiful and I really don't think he is too pink. (IMHO) Congrats! I would love to see a pic of your rooting.
Ronel is right hun, it's not on YOUR computer, it just showed up when I clicked on that one pic I listed above in this thread topic. Go back and re read my earlier post to see which one it was. It was only one of your pics so that's why I couldn't understand why only that one. It's weird. The other ones are all ok, no probs. I'll go click it again and see if it does it. I did turn that weirdo in for putting a porn pic on that site! So hopefully they fined him or something, how rude and inconsiderate he was (and very naked!) :o
OK hun, I just went and checked to see if it was still there and it's not, thank goodness! I don't see any of what I saw before. I'm betting that it was their mistake at imageshack that the weirdo's pic was in with yours and they removed it. Also there were other peoples pics in there (not icky ones like that guys) and those are also gone. I think someone got their wires crossed and put some other peoples pics in with yours by mistake. They could only have done that if something got mixed up in the IT department. Don't worry hun, it's all over. WHEW! It probably will never happen again!
Teddy is my next project still in the finishing stages but looking good as a little red head now named HANNAH more pictures coming soon just took a quik ones tonight so they are dark and not real good but im so excited at what a darling shes becoming and just had to share!

use the light eyebrow pencil hold the head upside down or sideways if your a lefty and swipe stroke them short at first then add longer ones in between if your not sure get out a hard boiled egg cold of course and practice on it every day the curvey eggs shape makes you curve your brow strokes...! once you have the strokes down they have great tutorials on how to make them look 3d and more on here go there too good luck
ps egg salad and pickled eggs are a great summer lunch after they serve to teach they can be served to eat LOL

Thank you the rooting is not my favorite it takes forever but im getting pretty good at it and im a perfectionist so i go over it several times to be sure i didnt miss spots and that will make you nuts if you dont section it off well im working on 2 more so i hope to have them done soon I have many going just slow to get them done

I dont know im no expert but she pretty darn cute! i bet if you pose her in a cuddly way with lots of soft blankies and plush with tiny hair bows she would be a darling photogenic little girl I like her you did a great job making her her hair is really fine too
Hi Jean! Thanks for your reply!! I have the same problem when I root, I hate bald spots but no matter what I do, I still end up with them. It seems almost impossible to get a plug in every spot. seems like rooting in a circular pattern should prevent bald spots but it doesn't (at least not for me... yet). She is only the 2nd baby I've rooted, I'm sure I'll eventually figure it out. Cherie
Baby Sam is adorable. Great job on him. I always had the other problem with rooting when I started. All my babies had a full head of hair no matter what I did. Well done on the wispy look!
Just as Tina said, I had trouble accomplishing the wispy look on my earlier dolls. They always ended up with a thick head of hair, and I thought I would never be finished with the hair. To have grasped the art of creating the sparse, baby-fine-hair appearance after your first couple rooting attempts, is remarkable.

Hi, I am new here. I am working on my first doll. She is Rosie and came with Secrist Kit #3, but looks and feels like a baby boy. I had a mishap with my oven and he melted and now has a tilted head. I am going to complete him anyway as he is a learning experience, the first of many I'm sure. :) I have followed the video in my kit and did an internal purple wash, blushing, and blushing detail. I am unhappy with the arms and leg and am going to strip them and start over. I did veins (without the benefit of the technique sheets, which I have now ordered). I also did some blue shading around the eyes and nose, which was not in the instructions on the video but I had seen in pictures of other "babies". The veins and blue shading may be too dark. He appears pale around the eyebrow area, around the nose and mouth. I have some thoughts on what needs to be done to improve him. I think I need to add some flesh paint, perhaps warmed up with a little yellow ochre ? I think he also needs a light coat of lip color. Of course eyebrows, some moisture on the eyelids and the lips when I reach that point, and eventually hair. Although the kit seems to be a good way to start, I feel I need some tools and paint not included in my kit. I have ordered some Genesis paint which I can mix and thin rather than the premix. Is it ok to put these paints over the baked on premix? Is it ok to put a flesh coat over the blushing detail? And if I paint the eyebrows while waiting for the new paint to arrive, is it ok to put the flesh paint over the eyebrows or do I need to paint the eyebows last? I would appreciate any constructive criticism and knowledge any of you would be willing to share. You will not hurt my feelings. I think your input would be very helpful. The pictures attached were taken outside in natural light though it is a very cloudy, rainy day here. Thanks, Lyn
Lyn, your baby is very well done so far. i'm sure you will make him look very cute! i really like how the head got alittle tilted, it will make your baby look like he is slowly drifting to sleep. very nice coloring and shading. can't wait to see him when he is all done!
I think you are doing a great job on your doll. I agree the little tilt to the head can work in your favor, and maybe make her/him look more lifelike.
I'm going to try to answer your questions. If I accidentally leave one out, please let me know.
Yes... you can apply Genesis paint over the pre-mixed Authentic Reborn paint and vice versa.
One of the beauties of the heat set paints like Genesis and Authentic Reborn brands is the ability to apply multiple layers of paint to achieve a lifelike appearance...one thin layer at a time. Another major advantage is the freedom to remove most of the color in a new layer before it is set or baked.
You can apply any color over another color. Just make sure you set each layer if you don't want it to mingle with another color. On the other hand, you might decide you want to apply two or more different colors in one layer. You might want put two different flesh colors on the same sponge to begin creating a more mottled look. The rule of thumb is to bake when you want to make the layer permanent.
I personally would wait to add the eyebrows. If you paint the eyebrows and later decide to add another skin layer, you run the risk that your eyebrows will end up changing to the color(s) that were applied on top. I usually save the eyebrow painting for the last step.
Let me know if I've forgotten to address anything.
Linda

Linda, Thank you so much for the response and information. Do you think I'm right that he needs skin tone layers? Do you have any other suggestions on how to make him look more lifelike? Thanks, Lyn
Thanks June. Your Rosies are beautiful! I have not decided on hair color yet. I really would like to do it in a light brown. Blonde and Black mohair came in the kit and I would need to order brown. Since I have practically "broke the bank" with the doll kit and supply orders since ordering my first kit a couple of weeks ago, I am hesitant to order more just now but would not want to place an order only for mohair. I want to be happy with the final results, especially since it appears rooting will take many, many hours. So, I will probably go ahead an order a light brown mohair.
Lyn, I think his coloring is comming along nicely. We've all melted a baby or two however like others have mentioned, I too think this one can work for you. Best of Luck!
You can dye Mohair with Permanent Human Hair dye. I Did a Custom order and coundn't buy the right coulour, so I dyed it on his had when I finished rooting it. I used a baby comb, squeezed on the dye and combed it through his hair lifting the hair so it didn't touch the yinyl. I washed it out with his head hanging down. It turned out realy nice. You could dye it first if you where a bit wary. XXXXX June.
