From oil paint to GHS Paints
Permalink

What I have done is paint a doll with artists' oil paints - I have even rooted the head - I have not sealed the paint with anything. I have now bought some GHS Paints and would like to strip the artists' oil paints (with the exception of under the mohair) and repaint with GHS Paints - using acetate to remove the oil paint first. The question is - will this work? Also, with it be OK to put the head in the oven with the mohair on, without damaging the mohair? Will it also be OK to leave the ordinary oil paint on underneath the mohair - I have already sealed the mohair in. I won't attempt to do this until I receive some advice - please can you help me?

I would not completely redo the doll, if I were you. I would just move on to the next one with the heat set paints.

Yes, you can put the mohair in the oven. Use a damp cloth to cover it. My concern is that with the number of times you will have to put it in the oven you'll end up drying it out.

I didn't think of the mohair drying out - thanks for that - maybe if I heat it just the once - and redo the limbs completely. I far prefer using the Genesis Heat Set Paints - they are a lot easier to use, plus it cuts the drying time to zilch.

If you're going to heat the head, just wet the mohair and then put a well squeezed out washcloth on the head. It should be ok. Some put conditioner in the hair but I'm not so sure about that.

I could never use air dry paints. I'm too impatient when it comes to the heat set paints!
I also make too many mistakes!

I was painting lips today and got the chapped lip look so I just whipped out the thinner, removed the paint (everything else was heat set so I didn't have to worry about undoing anything) and redid them! I also misplaced the eyebrows and since I hadn't set the paint yet, I just removed it and did them correctly. I was so nervous about starting with them (I used the old acrylic and stencil creme on my first two dolls) and now I think they are the best thing ever!

You can put the mohair in the oven and not even wet it. It fairs well, it doesn't dry out any - i've done this numerous times myself. If i'm working with a hard vinyl i'll heat my head in the oven many times over during the rooting process so that the vinyl is really easy to root. I found that trying to heat it with a wheat-bag/sock just didn't soften the vinyl enough. So this is how i first found that the mohair is quite happy being placed in the hot oven over and over.

there has been occasion that i've decided i'm not happy afterall with the baby's features and have then added further detail to the face one i've already done the hair.

Acrylic eyelashed don't appreciate the oven so much - they tend to shrival up!!! Some eyes are fine - glass and polymer eyes. But cheep plastic ones will melt a little and change shape or possibly cloud over.... but then if your repainting you'd want to remove your eyes anyway coz you don't want to get paint on them.

Stripping a baby back that much though is going to be a nightmare!!! seriously you'll use over a liter of acetone -- by the time your half way through the striiping you'll probably be so frustrated that you'll just want to throw it all out!!

the other thing to be aware of is that some vinyls can be damaged by too much acetone exposure. the amount needed to strip your baby right back to start over, you'r likely to go through all the headache of stripping it back only to find after you first cook (heat setting of your first genesis layer) your vinyl if damaged might come out with what look like air bubbles trapped under the vinyl.

This happened to me when i decided to strip a baby back (i think it was my 3 or 4th doll i'd done) b/c i wasn't happy with the look. When i cooked the first layer after all that stripping my baby's head emerged from the oven with air bubbles in under the vinyl about the same diameter of a 10c coin!!! Once this happened there was no saving the kit... in the bin it went. And sadly it happened to be a limited edition kit too!!!

So what i'm saying in the end is. You'er probably best to just leave this baby and start with your genesis with your next. Your kit could be fine after stripping back, but it is very messy and smelly work... and there is a possibility of damage to the vinyl.

Thank everybody for your advice. I'll probably just leave it then, I think - the acetone smell will likely get too much for me. It is not an important doll - just a cheap toy doll - so I can easily give it the flick and move on to something else - perhaps trying out mottling on a Louise kit with vinyl body. Hey, I really LOVE having the whole body to work with - many thanks to Danielle for that - could we have a full-body boy too please? It will be so nice to dress them for the beach - I can't stand those "plates" - creepy somehow.

I'm very grateful for all your advice - I'll just go ahead with another kit.
