There easier than a vinyl one, I usually use glass oval as in the past the synthetic ones changed colour either to purple or lime green. First you put wax arround the eye this holds it into position, once you have them set correctly you make up some plaster of paris, and spoon it in though the top of the head as there is normally a pouring hole there, once dry you use a vinyl heat pate and glue into position. I made the wig from mohair for the Flora I have already posted but as these are as Dora and Tinker Bell , I'll only be using wigs that suit. XXXXX June.
The hole in the top of the head is kinda towards the back. Like when men wear the yamika's (sp?) when they are Jewish. Sits right about in the same spot. I used a natural fiber weaved "pate" (don't ask me why it's called that) and you center the outer edge around the head hole and then glue it on after you are done cementing the eyes in. You can also get an eye tool that has a stem sticking out so you can put that in the opening (full round eyes), Then it has a small basket like part that cradles the bacl of the eyeball. With your eye wax it is easy to get the eyeball to stick in the position you want it in so you can cement it in place. You make sure you bevel the inside of the eye hole so the eyeball fits flush, no gaps. Press the eyeball up and if there's any excess wax it should squeeze out the front. Then when the cement inside to hold the eyes is dry, you take a tool and remove the wax that is on the outside.
The porcelain greenware (raw before baking in a kiln) is very fragile. If you touch it too hard you will leave fingerprints in it. I used to use cotton balls to clean mine with. And I used silicone eyes (about $35 per pair) or Secrist Real Eyes.
June, is that a front loading kiln? It looks very large. Oh, I soooo wish I could do porcelains again. I miss it so.
