What would you say...?

What would you say to a potential buyer if they asked if you could open up a nose on an already completed doll whose nose was not opened but shaded?  I gently explained the risk of potential damage to the vinyl and paint and explained why I didn't open this ones nose but instead shaded it.  Would any of you attempt to open it after the fact?  I tried once before and scratched the paint under the nose so I am scared to try again.

I wouldn't. There are plenty of dolls and plenty of other people out there that want yours just the way it is.

Well... I guess I wouldn't attempt it either. Especially for a "perspective" buyer. I "might" attempt it for a winning bidder but I would ask "what purpose would be served by doing this?" Then, so if they don't like it when the get it, I would have them sign a paper before I sent the doll or did anything to it, that stated that they are asking me to do this and they are doing so at their own risk. This way you have leverage with evilbay just in case. KWIM?

But, in all honesty, not only would I probably not do it, I wouldn't elaborate to the buyer the details of why I wouldn't, I would just say it is not something that I choose to do and leave it at that. Depending on the person, if I say "...because it might compromise the integrity of certain vinyls, or because I might slip, or the paint might become damaged" then it tends to make me unknowledgeable or unsure of my own work. See where I'm coming from on that one? I don't want to give the customer/potential customer any information like that in case they maybe have buyers remorse and want their money back. Then they can go to evilbay and say look here what they wrote...

So, I didn't mean to put this all in here but it just all spilled out lol
Just some scenarios, food for thought. Mostly what the customer wants to hear is direct... do you or don't you, and the why only has to be because I choose not to. Besides it is a lot of extra work taking apart, fixing it, putting in the felt, re-assembling. I mean it's ultimately up to the artist but I wouldn't. Especially for the price that most reborns are going for nowadays.

I hope I didn't make this too confusing for you all. :o

I would'nt do it, I would just say that the doll is finished and don't want the risk of damaging it.

I wouldn't do that either!! I would be scared as well.... even if you didn't scratch the paint... they might change their mind after the fact and then there is really no fix to it either.. So I would explain it genlty too... Hope I helped too!!!

Well I did tell her that thier were risk's that that I really wasn't comfortable doing it. I haven't heard back so I guess it wasn't what she wanted to hear.
Thank you ladies for all the advice!

I don't open any noses, I prefere to shade them. Then after the fact, here in Australia, you get Silverfish, a little bug that loves to eat woolen garments and felt. So for this reason I don't open any noses even in Porcelain Dolls. I think shading is just as nice, I do open the mouths of some of the porcelain as they have teeth and this is how the sculptor has designed them but then they don't have felt or filling behind them. SO

Oh, I so hate those little silverfish! YUCK! Here in America, they like moist, damp, or book book bindings. Most people that have them, they are in basements unless the privey is damp, then they're in there too. Fast little buggars too!

Ya Tina, that woman probably was just curious. She had probably seen one before and wanted to know about yours since they are shaded.
