A program called 'My Fake Baby' was on the TV over here (UK) recently and the women buying the babies, although treated fairly and with sensitivity, were shown as being rather 'extreme'.
One of them had a heart wrenching story and was obviously very upset and had a husband who although shared her sadness thought the baby looked like something off of a morticians slab.... I was so sad for her it made me cry..!!
The other lady had 4 or 5 babies and each had it's own designer buggy and clothes, she was flying to America to collect her latest baby and she went to Harrods to buy an outfit to bring her home in.... it cost nearly £200. The baby wasn't actually that good and when she had 'bonded' with it (her words) for 2 days she found the back of the head had been smashed, so returned it and flew home with her mother empty handed. She too was obviously very upset.
The main bug bear for me was that it hardly showed the long hours and artistic skill that went into making the babies which was very disappointing. When they do other programs on the arts and hobbies they portray the subject matter during its creation and not the life stories of the people buying it. I know it helps to understand the reasoning behind why someone would want to own one of our babies but I think it was still slightly unfair. *climbs off of soap box*
Has anyone else seen this program or one like it? Has anyone seen a program that concentrates more on the Artist that the buyer?
Yes we have had those sort of TV programs over here in Oz also, potrying woman as nut jobs because we collect Reborns as well as Dolls, My husband and I used to talk to my Porcelain ones, Like, Hey how have you lot been today, I don't think it weird. Others have a different interpritation of our craft. I sent Pat B, a copy of a magizine artical written over here, I think it was tastefully writte, Showed pictures of some artists and collectors but just wrote a story on me. How I became invoved in Doll Making and then into Reborning. I take most of TV with a grain of salt these days. They only put out what they want to, not the real story. XXXXX JUne.
I talk to my plants... as does his royal highness the Prince of Wales.... that doesn't make us nut jobs.. nothing wrong with talking to inanimate objects either... I regularly swear at my iron and sometimes can be caught chastising my vacuum cleaner too.
It's all part of life's rich pattern and thank God we are all different.... how boring would it be if we were all the same? xx
In the US, we have that as well. I've never personally seen the shows, and I only got into this art about 6 months ago (give or take a few weeks) but now I know I wouldn't judge someone for what they do.
I do think there are some women (and maybe men) that use these dolls as substitutes for whatever reason, but who are we to judge if they're not hurting anyone?
talking to your babies isn't any weirder then my talking to my dogs, i've been known to say ......shamwow didn't i tell you to stay out of that....ya like that works . everyone is weird in their own way, thats why the world is so great. sage

Liselle, While I was teaching Porcelain Doll Making, I had a Lady that's husband had passed, she still had his ashes. I made her a male doll which she dressed in cloths she had made from his clothing, she didn't want to part with his ashes so put them in the doll. So for whatever reason, I think no one should judge. I also lost my son and made a little elf and inscribed on the shoulder plate, In Loving memory of Sean. Also I did Jess as my mums first Great Granddaughter was called Jessica, so she was made in Loving memory of my Mum. I also have one that I did Just after Princess Dianna's passing and Inscibed on her also plus I put a cherub decal on her shoulder. Each to there own, I say. XXXXXX June

Agreed. We never know the reason some people become so attached to an item, whether it's an article of clothing, a household object or a collectible doll. To each their own, and leave them be.
My sister called me a couple of months ago and told me to turn to this program, I was shocked that someone would spend that much money on an outfit and then money to fly to the states to pick up the baby.
I talk to my dogs too, I talk to them as if they were human they understand what I'm saying, people can't believe how I talk to them and how well they mind me, when they don't mind my husband he tells them I'm gonna tell mama, they are our babies since our children are adults, when we go away and come back I say where are my babies then all four of them come running for a kiss.
My son has had two dogs that we are always baby sitting as he hasnt got his own home and is renting , so no dogs, Well Kimba, Use to say Hullo MUUUM, Now we have Budda and he does the same. You know when you haven't fed him he calls in a yoodle, he is so big he looks savage, but is meak and mild. They know who love's them and who they need to protect. XXXXX June.
