This is what I've done on my little $5 walmart doll. She's gonna be my fairy doll, so she's got the pink hair. (Bought on Ebay from seller mohairwig, I included the pic of it that was on the site)
The hair on the doll might not show up well, I don't have the best camera.
Feel free to comment or question.
I'm not done, I want it to be thicker. I will probably leave it wild looking somewhat. I still haven't sealed it, cos I need to get the sealer.
I will probably use the air dry paints on her.

Uhm.....hehehe....I'm not even using a sock. I just hit it with the heat gun every now and then. No pattern to it, just random line punching basically.
the hair's a little hard to see, like you said camera problems. take about a cup of rice(uncooked) in a sock put it and cup water in microwave for about 3 minutes. put sock in head. this will keep head warm /soft for a good amount of time. you'll get a lot more rooting done with it. sage

I agree with Sage, also if when you are finished and the colour of the hair doesn't hide the grooves you can dye it with human hair dye. I love the white hair , you can also use mouse and give it curl, she would look great as a human fairy. I love Citytoy Babies, I'made two and have a dark one and another white one to do. XXXXX June.
The transformation is simply AMAZING!! I can't believe it's the same baby. You did an excellent job of taking a clearly caucausian baby and making it ethnic.
i'm so glad you two like her, there's realy no secert-- you just take 1cap pink,2 caps tan and 1 or 2 caps wine liqued ritz dye. easy on the wine cause if you leave baby in to long it'll be mite redder then you want. i used the ethnic color for aa's found on secrists special techniques dvd to paint her. she's fun cause she can be an aa ,hispanic or native american . if you haven't dyed a baby before, use one thats not important and don't get in a rush.but i will say the hotter the dye bath the sooner the vinyl will take the color.it'll still take awhile, to check color pull a limb out and dry it to see color. as vinyl drys it'll darken a little so go a little lighter then the color you want. let me know if you do a baby this way i'd love to see it. again thanks for likeing her sage

I love your baby, when I first started to reborn I used dye too I practiced on cheap dolls then made 3 18 in berenguer dolls, I like painting them better.
Worked a little more on my fairy baby today. I'm supposed to be reading my materials for class tomorrow. Shhhh!! LOL
I used the air-dry paints, a little more sparingly this time, so tell me what you think? I may just use regular acrylic paints to give her a bit more "pizazz" or something a bit brighter. I haven't decided yet.
I will be using sculpey to make ears, I just haven't done that yet either.
I think, even with the crappy photos, that you can tell the hair is thicker now. I'm almost wishing now I'd gotten a darker color, or brighter even, but this is coming along nicely, I think.
Ok, hit a snag. I realized that I can't put the ears on, because they have to be molded to her own ears. I don't think I can bake it with the hair on, and Sculpey HAS to be baked to harden. What do I do?? Do I have to take all her hair out? And if so, I will, but how do I do that? Just yank it out??
1 oz of light Bordeaux varagated mohair curls for your doll, felting or spinning project This batch has had permanent moth proofing applied during dyeing , it is not a pesticide and does not wash off. color is lanaset Bordeaux dyed to a pastel shade and over dyed with darker bits as shown bulk dyed Mohair the lot you will receive is from the lot shown about 1 oz used for the picture
This has good length (mostly 3-5" locks) ready for you to craft with, turn it into hair for your favorite fantasy doll. needle felt or spin , as it is shown as it will arrive dyed as far as vegetable matter goes there is a little . Great for when you need small amounts for accent colors.
Bulk dyed mohair , Bulk mohair means it is in a pile as it was dyed and dried and is not lined up or sorted
Well, I opted to yank out the hair and leave a bit of fuzz. I'm gonna reroot it anyway. Here's a couple of crappy pix (LOL) to show what I've done. All in all, I'm actually pretty impressed with her ears, for the very first try.
So here's a question for you. I did NOT color match the sculpey, and there is an obvious color difference. How do I go about blending that color better? I was going to paint her blue, but I didn't like the effect, so I stripped her back to natural. I'm not sure how to color a whole baby. LOL
You did great so far.... I don't know how you would do the whole fairy baby... unless you paint like you would if it wasn't a fairy baby... I don't know I never done one before...

Looking good, I am working on BBs Aisha I am rooting with a 40 gauge one barb needle I get bored with rooting because you only get 1 or 2 hairs at a time but I like the finished product, I have broke all but 1 needle, I ordered them from BnB but they are not taking any orders right now because one of the owners had surgery they were suppose to start orders again july 7th but have'nt yet I hope she is ok, I'll have to shop around for needles, when I get bored I put it down it could be days before I pick it up again so I know what you mean.
Since I have started reborning... lol don't get upset...hehehe but I broke like 1 needle and have what I bought with rooting kit.. lol I guess I am too careful...

I found that with brand new needles I need to root a few hairs s l o w l y at first then I'm ok. If I root as quickly as normal right after I put a new needle in they break ARGH! I think she's comming along great though! I too get a little bored seomtimes....it depends on how well the hair is grabbing and sometime it goes slow to get the results I want and I get frustrated. No two head root alike no matter what you do. Some just take a longer time.
Secrist now carries the 43 guage no barb forked German needles.
Now, in some of the pics, I can see you have larger gaps than others. Try to get your hairs fairly evenly spaced. And it looks like you're at the right angle with the needle to the head. Are you holding your needle kinda parallel to the head or are you at a steeper angle or straight up and down? It's kinda hard to tell.
ok needle: l head surface __ = not good
Needle: ___ head : ____ except for a little more tipped down on the front
Needle: ___ head : ____ except for a little more tipped down on the front
needle/head:
What? I don't get what you're trying to convey here, Pat. I'm dense I know. LOL
When I originally rooted her, I was going straight up and down. Now I do try to go in at an angle in the direction of the hair. You might get a better idea on the video.
OMGoodness Liselle she is looking awesome! I love the design and can't wait for her to be finished.
Sage you did a wonderful job on your baby! I couldn't think of dyeing a doll. I definately wouldn't do it right. The difference is amazing! She looks so comfy and cuddly I just want to hug her
I keep seeing the rice sock thingy...hummm think I'll try that next time. My hands are beginning to bother me (as I've done crafts and hair for years) so I'm looking for a way to ease the rooting process. I'm also looking to learn how to paint the hair.
Oh! BTW Liselle I love the color hair you've chosen! Again, can't wait to see her finished.

Um......lol. I need to work on her some more. Now that I KNOW how to paint and root some.....I've taken all her hair out and she's simply sitting here bald.
I'll post more pix soon as I start back to work on her.
hehehehe yeah I saw that you had rooted but didn't paint yet. I was thinking hummmm okayyyy but then I read on and saw the rest. I know she'll be great!
Well, I'm not sure I can, Em. She was my very first rooting attempt and she is $5 Walmart doll. I ripped the hair out before I realized I really shouldn't. We'll see how it goes.
