i was recently invited to show one of my babys at the fair, they know me from 16yrs of 4h.but i would have had to leave her there and i didn't see how they'd keep her safe so i opted out i'm sure someone else has run into this,i'd be interested in hearing how you handled it. sage
At our state fair we have things that are behind glass in display cases. I have only left 2 dolls in the 20+ I have been doing them. Since they were behind glass, I wasn't really worried about their safety, but it was very hard to leave them for 11 days. I have to confess I went to the fair 4 times that year (mostly just to check on my babies) lol.
They were porcelain. I believe I have posted pics of Shay in artist showcase some time ago. It took me 6 months to create her and dress/wig her. I still have her.
I decided not to ever enter another doll though, after the experience I had. The people judging at our fair had no training as judges but only chose what they liked and it didn't even have to be well done. The doll that one top awards was an American Indian doll but... it had a combination of 3 different outfits on. It had Crow hair, a Sioux outfit, and Chippewa moccasins. And the coloring was not even quality and still had seams on the hands and head!
I got (and this is no case of sour grapes at all) 3rd place on the baby and nothing but insults on my 28" Shay doll (the 6 months one). They said her cheeks were too red (she is a strawberry blonde and they were very light) and then they said I used decals on her eyebrows because they were... get this... "too perfect and no one can do them that well" so basically they were saying I cheated! So, needless to say, I NEVER entered another doll.
I did however, enter her in a "Ceramic and Doll show" where I took a 1st place blue ribbon on her. The competition was soooo close, they also took off her dress and her wig to see how/if I finished her!!! So how about that eh? All those judges do is go to judge school and then get paid to judge dolls all over the country! :)
It's all about how you feel about leaving your baby there hun, I know if there was no protection from... everyone, I wouldn't leave my babies. Perhaps you can ask them about protection for your baby. Couldn't hurt to ask, then make your final decision. :)

thanks pat, they had the perserves in a glass case but all the art and stuff was on tables 3ft (if that) behind pvc 4ft(maybe) high fence.i was concerned because a couple yrs before we had a blown egg contest ,they were locked in a chicken cage and thru the bars some jerk broke some of them . i know over protective but i couldn't see what would stop someone from walking off with her.who would notice they'd think it was real baby. sage

I know what you mean. Guess it's up to you to decide hun!
I had some AV dolls in a consignment shop some years back. There was a crafter who would get next to some of the other crafters and see if they had something she could get hold of and sell too, and she would undercut them on price. She did that to me with the AV dolls. So I got them in this shop, she followed me and got hers in too. Well come time for me to leave and 2 of my dolls were missing! One sales woman said maybe they got broke and are in the back. nope! They're vinyl and don't break.
Found out what happened to them... this creepy crafter woman took 1 of them and put it in her booth with her tag on it (I know my own babies!) and then 2 more someone said she took home. They didn't know the diff, they thought they were hers. So ya, it can happen and like you said... who would be the wiser?
I think they should put the jelly out and the dolls in the locked cabinet! :l
