I was wondering if you have any advice about eyelashes for me. I have finished my first doll, a secrist Zoe (as pictured as my avatar or profile pic) .
I am moving onto my second doll a Lillian by AJ. She has a nice face and cheeky smile, also reminds me alot of my youngest sister when she was a baby.
When it comes to doing the eyelashes on an open eyed baby, is it better to use the fake eyelashes that you can buy? or root.
I managed to root my Zoe's eyelashes and they look ok and more natural. I guess its mainly personal preferance, and i quite like the rooted effect.
If the eyelashes are rooted on an open eyed doll, placed along the top of the eyes, is there a technique or method to curl them more upward to look more real? Is there a line on the eyelids to follow or does it differ from sculpt to sculpt?
Eyebrows
I have seen and read in various places about the rooting of eyebrows. Has anyone tried this and how did it turn out? I quite fancy giving it ago on a test head and wondered what others had learnt in ways of techniques to make it more realistic.
I failed on my Zoe to get nice eyebrows so I left them off. The new doll I have has the look of a 2-3month old in my opinion and they tend to have slightly more prominant eyebrows.
Its funny how when you are looking for info and can't find it. You start another topic, and then you find them. I see there have been quite a few posts on eyelashes which are of use!
A few involve brows. It's not usually done and you have to make sure to study many many babies eyebrows close-up IMHO. I have done them twice and find that while they look just ok, I rather like the painted ones better. Besides, they do tend to break off and then you're left with bare spots.
If you read all the eyelash posts (using search is the best way to get most of them) and still need some comments, please feel free to come back and post another question. Also you might want to get the rooting dvd. It's very good, especially for beginners. :)
So far, no one has made a line on the lids to indicate where the lashes go, I don't presume they will as most people still do the glue on ones. And it would make a noticable line on the lid. And as you guessed, all dolls and lids are different so it's as individual as people.
June (sara zata) posted about how to curl rooted lashes on an open-eyed baby just a week or so ago I believe.

Thanks, I'll carry on reading and see about getting a D.V.D. It's a very interesting thing reborning, there are so many techniques and artistry skills that go in to making these lovely dolls. It's interesting to see what others do!
Yes, it's amazing to see just how many ways and techniques there are to reborning. And with the Secrist method, it's another technique that is good for everyone to start out with and then as you get better (with more practice) you too can go on to develop your own method hehehe
You should like the rooting dvd. Steph is very good!
