I haven't personally created a native American doll yet, but one of the DVDs that Secrist sells appears to include information that you might find helpful. Check out the DVD: Special Reborn Techniques Part 1 at http://www.secristdolls.com/inc/sdetail/34890
It has the following special sections:
Create the proper skin color and texture for dark skin ethnic babies
Create color-correct creases and wrinkles for dark skin ethnic babies
Mix paints to get the perfect color blush for dark skin ethnic babies
Mix paints to get perfect color eyebrows for dark skin ethnic babies
Learn a multi-color technique for life-like lip color on dark skin ethnic babies
There is also information on Asian babies.
Hopefully, someone else will also be able recommend some helpful ideas for you. In the meantime, please let us know how it goes and if you find some good info.
Linda

You can basically choose pretty much any skintone as American Indians skintone varies as much if not more than caucasian's. We have Sioux and Chippewa in our bloodline and get them all together and you have pretty much every tone. Now if you are making a "stereo-typical" American Indian baby then you might benefit from the link Linda has for you above. Pigment would be the same for the bi-racial baby or a little darker.
Google American Indian once and click on images. See how many you get. Then just pick the one that looks good to you and go for it.
I have made a Native baby before and I used Flesh 08 and then just blended in umber (dark brown) until I got the color I wanted. I actually did several layers and got a little darker with each layer.
Hi Kathie, I don't know if you've already started or not but there is no set skin tone as Buffington stated. I am an American Indian (Narragansett/Pequot) and we are generally not dark, at least not until the summer when we become a more reddish/golden brown. My ex-husband is also Indian (Taino) and when our children were born they were not dark. I wouldn't mind posting a picture of a couple of my children but I don't think I can in this post. Go to "Show us your completed babies!" post and they will be there. Or, you can Google "Native American babies". You will get many as our characteristics and colors change from region to region and tribe to tribe. I hope this helped. Thanks Buffington for making the note that "dark" is stereo-typical. I've seen alot of well meaning reborners make them too dark.
No problem Emily. I shudder to think of just how many people think "sterio-typical" all the time, not actually "look" at the differences (ie: features, skintone, eye colors, etc). And with several different American Indians in my family I see it first hand with skin tones especially. I too have seen lots of reborners that do their babies way too dark and sterio-typical. But the people that buy them are also the ones that don't recognize anything other than sterio-typical. Go figure! Thanks for posting pics of your kids in showcase. (ps... you can post "links" in other threads)
BTW... I really like your avatar baby. She has lots of hair just like my daughter and nephew did when they were born. I'm actually working on a baby that looks (as close as I can come without sculpting one myself) like my youngest daughter. I'm going to be using her hair for rooting this one. :)
Really!!!! I'm so excited for you! I know she will be beautiful! Thanks for the compliments too. I wasn't sure how to post links so that is why I didn't but I'll learn. Thanks again about my avatar baby, she really is my favorite. I've only done two so far but when I post my newest one (Iliana) you'll see what I mean. I agree totally with you about stereotypes. Maybe once they see your beautiful one they will then see. Again Oh good for you on the baby your working on! I look forward to seeing her.
