Hand Rooting On Open Eyes?

Hi everyone. I was looking through random topics the other day and came across one about rooting eye lashes in an open eyed doll. The lady who does it did not go into detail on how to do the rooting. She only said that she would never buy lashes again because this looks so much more natural. Has anyone tried this for themselves? And if so how did it turn out for you? I would think that you would have to have a steady hand!smile

Hi Alicia - I just finished my first open eye rooting. The sculpt has deep set eyes. I rooted at a angle from outside corner of eye toward inside. Then take dippity do or a heavy hair gel and put it on the lashes where you want them to lay and smash them down. Spread them out so the hairs don't stick together. I left mine about 2 inches long. Let them dry overnight. Cut them desired length. Now then, it was HARD to do and I'm not completely satisfied. I glued them from the outside. I rooted them because I didn't want glue on the eyeball and I can make a big mess. I also cut them a bit too short. I'm going to add a few more hairs and will post a pict of them. I think it's sure worth a try and I guess like everything else about reborning, it takes practise. Hugs, Sandy p.s. Here's hoping someone else can give us tips.

Hi Sandy, good to know that it can be done. It does sound tricky. But I would like to give it a try. Would you need a smaller gauge needle than usual?hmm I will test it out when I get full control back to my fingers! I have been out of comisssion for a few weeks, because of some dratted nerve damage. I broke my neck a few years back and these attacks loves to flare up right when I am in the middle of something!! LoL. I would love to see pics of the lashes. Do you think it gives a more natural look? The lady that I was speaking of in my post did not show any pics of her work which I thought was a little strange, but to each her own!smile

There are a few brave souls that root open-eyed babies but you really have to be VERY careful so you don't weaken the eyelid or poke through it with the needle. Yes, you need a fine needle to do this as you don't want a plug or large holes left in the vinyl either.

You also don't want to use baby-fine hair as it will just sag after a while. You want to insert the "lash" by the middle of the hair so it will actually look like 2 hairs coming out of the folicle which is actually quite natural looking. And don't cut them all off the same length. Our own lashes are several lengths but it doesn't really show when we look at them. Also, take a look at your own lashes in the mirror.

Some people trying to root them go right on the point of the lid but lashes don't really grow their, they grow under the edge usually. So look closely are your own lashes and determine if you think you can get that effect or not before you start. I do like the idea of putting the gel on the lashes to keep them set.

I have rooted lashes on an open eyed doll for the same reason Sandy stated--glue and me are dangerous to eyeballs.

I used roughly the same technique as Sandy on the first eye lid. On the second eye lid, the vinyl must have been weak behind the eye socket because it tore on the inside, and the eye fell out. Rooting without the eye ball seemed much easier, but I didn't like having to use glue to make sure the eyeball would stay in.

I used a very fine needle and human hair. The angle is important because it needs to be a little different than the one you can use on a closed-eye doll. You don't want the lashes to droop downward and cover the eyeball or rest on the cheekd. The angle must more upward for an open-eye doll.

I have by no means perfected this, and each sculpt is different. The rooted lashes can look so much more realistic than the glue-on ones, but only when they are rooted in the proper direction and at the correct angle with a 42 or 43 g needle that picks up a hair or two at a time on a doll kit with eyelids that expose the the area out of which eye lashes grow.

I gave up on the rooted eyelashes - pulled them all out. I tried 3 times and never got them to look like I wanted. I'll try again on another sculpt. I'm doing Stoete's Noelle and I think the eyes are so deep set that the artificial ones will look better. ARRRG. Sandy

When I root an open eye doll I use the method I learned from another reborner. I root them the same way you do a sleeping baby. Then I use some gel and comb them up until they rest back on the forhead. When it drys gently lift from the vinyl and then trim them to the length you want. If the first gel treatment hasn't curled them up enough for your liking then give it another try and then trim. Worked good for me.
Hope this helps.
Hugs

You know the other day I tried to glue some eyelashes to a doll and it was a disaster! I couldn't do it. Ended up rooting the eyelashes. It was easier. lol Oh yeah forgot to mention I hold my head upside down to root so I can see better.

I can't glue them on either, no matter what I do. I'm going to give my next opened eyed baby a try at rooting them

I think it is so much easier. Also if you root upside down you can see better! Good luck with your next one!

Try holding the head upside down and put the glue on the under side of the eyelid instead of the lash. Then with a toothpick, press the lash onto the under side of the eyelid and go from there. Sometimes the glue makes the lash strip wiggley and it gets a mind of it's own. lol

I use E6000 for my lashes. It stays flexible and rubs off the eyeball if I get any on it. But it's gotta be really freshly opened or it tends to get thick.

Pat, I've been looking for E6000, but can't find it anywhere! It's in the Secrist catalog, but I can't seem to find it on the website. Am I looking in the wrong place? I am using Alene's to glue lashes on. For me, putting the glue on the eyelid first instead of the lashes seems to work best. I use a toothpick to put the glue on and then a toothpick dipped in olive oil to press it on. Dipping the toothpick in the oil keeps it from sticking to the eyelash so it doesn't pull it off. I need lots of light and magnifers to see what I'm doing, though. I've thought about trying to root lashes, but when I do, I sprout feathers and start to cluck. Maybe someday!
Hugs, Melinda

Hello Melinda,
You can find E6000 in any local craft store or hardware store. Places like Walmart even sell it.

Hey Melinda,

Like Tina said, most craft and hobby stores have it, like even Michaels, yep walmart, probably Hobby Lobby (we don't have one of them in my state). Or try an art supply store in your area. Maybe google up E6000 craft glue and see. If it takes you to the site for the glue manufacturers it should say something like find a store. :)

Thank Pat and Tina! I have checked Hobby Lobby, but they don't carry it. I also looked for it at Ace Hardware and Home Depot, and again no luck. But I never thought of looking at Walmart. Gonna give them a try on Saturday! Hugs, Melinda

I've seen E-6000 in Michael's, Wal-mart, and I'm pretty sure I've seen in at the office supply store.  Hope you find it!

Nice idea. I know some also use the baby tears from Secrist (Aleenes paper glaze) to do the same thing.
