Here is my first sculpt, Caleb, recently finished, baked, and sanded. Please give me any suggestions or advice you have; I want to improve on my future babies. Don't worry, I won't be offended. :) Thanks.

Please excuse the moonys and the off-color pictures. :)

Andrea, I think the only thing I have noticed, is that on the left arm it should be straight with the hand. Just looking at some I have here. He is lovely. I think once you have had kits made he should do very well. He may need a bit more sanding on the face to smooth out a few little hollows. WELL DONE> XXXXXXX June.

Really very good for a first attempt!! What clay are you using? it looks like Sculpey which is o.k for learning with but that sculpt is too good for it :) I would suggest checking your oven temps and maybe baking for a shorter time to avoid moonies, or change to a different brand of clay, prosculpt is good.:)

The moonies actually comes from overworking your clay. When we do this we actually put air and moisture into the clay and when it's baked it has to go somewhere (like the steam from a tea kettle) and it comes out as steam and leaves a space that shows up as little circles or moons (thus the name moonies).
I have learned to run my clay through the noodle maker only once to get the thinness I need to work with. Although I have cut and removed an entire face and replaced that clay when I overworked the clay so I wouldn't end up with face moonies! lol
I used sculpy at first but now use the baby prosculpt.
OOPS!! I forgot to comment on your sculpt... The head is absolutely marvy! Hard to believe it's your first :o Limbs are harder, even for the seasoned sculptors but with practice you'll get there!

I am sitting here with my mouth open and being speechless which is something I'm not to knowledgeable about, anyway......YOU are just about one of the most talented people that I have EVER had the privaledge of meeting. How in heaven's name were you able to make this and it being your very first? Oh..if only I had half the talent I would be very happy. WOW and WOW again.

Thank you so much, ladies. When I get at break from custom reborn and rooting orders, I plan to try another one, hopefully an awake one. And I want to try looking into getting that one made into a kit. I'm unsure if I should try to do that with this baby, since his limbs are not perfect. Also, in the future I do want to try Prosculpt. I also need to know of a good way to paint my sculpts. I heard that if I use Genesis, it may make the moonies worse, so I'm not sure what to do. If you ladies have any advice, I would love to have it. Thanks again.

Secrist has an article or something on the site about painting your clay sculpts. You may want to look into that hun. To not get so many moonies try not to work your clay so much. For sculpting info you may want to visit a sculpting forum also. I'll pm you the web addy. :)
Maybe we could start one after the first of the year. I sent an email to secrist to see if I order now, can they delay shipping. I don't know if I would want something sitting on the front porch. I have a cart with a begin sculpting kit.

Yes, I would love too give it a go. I might be a tad busy right after the new year with the new baby (my daughter is staying with us awhile after the c-section until she's up on her feet) but after shes settled I'm going to really look into it. I want to research the basic needs to get started so I don't break the bank too much!
The sculpting kits from Secrist are pretty good. I do just LOVE the sculpting forms they have, especially since they have more sizes now. I have tried the medium and large. I just have to get a few of the small to make a smaller sized baby. Now they just need limb forms (which you can get through artdolls.com from Jack Johnston. He also has prosculpt since he created it. But I like Secrist head forms the best.
