Hi All. Well, I do believe that that I have got my confidence back up to start my BB Josie kit. I have give her a bath and opened her nose. I am not over joyed with the shape of her nose. It look a little square at the nostral opening, but I rounded them a bit. I was scared to go to far!!! Did not want another disaster! I have noticed on many ebay listing that some artist do not open the noses. Is this a personal choice or does it have to do with the mold? I would think that open noses would look more true to life, but I have never seen a baby with a closed nose. I did win a beautiful indian baby on ebay whose nose is closed. So I guess that I will be able to see how it looks first hand. From her pics you can not tell a difference. Wish me luck. I think that I have got the whole shine thing licked for the time being! I have practiced pouncing the shine remover on until my wrist feels like it is broken. Hope to get a pretty baby from what I learned from all of you. Thanks to you all. Alicia.

How exciting that you are ready to start making your doll! With all the study, you are going to do great.
About the nose drilling... I usually do not drill the noses because I feel I can give the illusion using paint without doing the actual drilling. I think the practice of drilling out the nostrils began when the nostrils were not sculpted deep enough. Nowadays, I think it's rare to find nostrils that are too shallow.
I don't like to drill the nostrils as a result of what I found when trying to restore an old doll. The inside of the doll's head and limbs had somehow gotten gotten wet. After a few years, discoloration developed on the vinyl from mold / mildew. I worry that open nostrils are one more door that could allow the inside of the doll to get wet.
I think it's personal preference. If you like to see the nostrils open, go for it!
Regarding the purple wash... I don't know if BB kits are made of translucent vinyl. If the vinyl isn't translucent, I would skip the purple wash because it won't really show.
If it is translucent, poor a few drips of the purple wash in the limbs. Hold a napkin / paper towel over the limb opening and shake. When you think you've gotten the purple evenly distributed, turn the limb over on a paper towel / napkin to drain the purple wash out before baking. You might need to wipe out the inside to make sure you don't have purple wash hiding on the rim.
I hope that makes sense. If not, please be sure to holler and I'll try to find some other words to describe.

Hey Linda. thanks for the info. I never thought of it that way before. but now that you brought it up I can see your point! Since I am new to reborning and collecting reborns (I only have 3 babies and 1 on the way) I have not had the chance to see one with the closed nose. I did open the nose on Josie, but I did not put the wash in yet. You shaved me a step!!! This is my second kit. I had a bad experience with a jar of shine remover about a week ago. But some good did come from it. I did conquer the shine remover and met some great peaple in the process!! It was not a total loss. Talk to you soon.
The only kits I ever use the internal purple wash in are the Secrist (as they are made especially translucent like a babies skin, so do need the wash) or some of the DD kits from Germany (it depends on how translucent the vinyl is). I never use the wash on the BB kits (as they don't need it) nor do I drill the nostrils as the kits are usually vinyl/silicone mix and are not as stable as some of the other kits. If your vinyl (or vinyl mix) kits are too thin or too squishy, it would definately compromise the strength and integrity of the vinyl to drill them (IMHO).
all i have done are bb kits love all the babys they have i have not opened the nose i just make the inside a little darker but i have been putting the interal wash in them didnot know i did not need to do that, no wonder why it did not look any diferant i think it gets better the more you do you get hooked. im on my second baby and i took my time on rooting the hair and it is coming out buetiful the first one you dont want to know but keep it up thats what im doing. good luck
Heather, each doll will be better and better. I'm looking foward to seeing how your second baby turns out.
