Well finally I managed to get the hang of the german fork needle. I still have to get the swirl in the right place.... more to the back of the head I would say.
that is one head of hair. my first head people said it looks like she had plugs i made to many hole and not enough hair. i treid to swirl the back i couldnt do it. then when i cut i cut to much off. im going to try my second head its going to be golden blond.its angelic touch mohair from authentic reborn its wavy.
To root a head needs alot of practise, and I am still practising . You will improve with each head. Yeh be careful not to cut it to short with the first cut.....
Congratulations - It looks wonderful, just beautiful. And the hairs are so evenly spaced-perfect. I'm still trying, trying, etc. Thanks for the picture. Hugs. Sandy
CONGRATS!!!! I haven't tried mine again since the last failed try but I plan on giving it another go soon. Nice job I think you did a wonderful job on the swirl.
Ronel, that rooting is wonderful. And I think you have placed the swirl exactly right. I've only done one full head with the German needle. Some types of vinyl seem to accept it more readily than others. You have done a great job on this head - don't forget to show us the whole doll when it's completed.
You definitely beat the German forked needles. Very natural-looking hair! I bet your customer is impressed.

Thank you all for your kind words! hehe the one on the left is the life one. Rooting is for sure not the easiest part of dollmaking. I had my trail and errors and I am still trying to perfect it. Hopefully some day I will be as good as the talented ladies on the forum
Oh My Ronel! Your baby is awesome! What a good job of chosing the face, it's so very close. And your coloring has come so very far! The swirl is really good, as is the rooting in general. Swirls are usually toward the right or the left but about where you have it as far as the horozontal area. I wouldn't go any lower down the back of the head.
So nice that you have beat the needle. I still have issues with those darned things. Only the German ones. Congrats and awesome!
Ronel, You have done such a lovely baby, I bet her Mummy will be so proud of your work as with all of us on here. Well done. I agree with all the other comments also. XXXXX June.

Thank you all! She is still on her way to her new mommy and I hope she will be happy with her. I am really not into look-alike dolls, so this was my first attempt and I think it would be the last one. I like to sell babies available, then I know I made it from the heart. Custom babies for me is like a job.. you have to do it a certain way.
Thank Pat, I will try that on my next baby. Tell me do all babies have a swirl on the head? I will have to get photos from the net and study them.
I haven't attempted my first memory baby yet, I've had request but a bit shy to try them yet. Your however is is a perfect match from kit to hair! Her new mommy will fall in love. Congrats once again!!
Have you seen that some places and good artist are saying they will root your baby for you. YOu have to mail it to them and I guess tell them what color and how long and curls or not. I've seen this offer twice in the last 7 days. I only remember the last one's place...only because I ordered 1 1/2 ounces of mohair. I got some of that mohair from Weaving Dixie and she is very nice, but the hair is not combed and I can't do it without it have about a 60% waste if not more. I didn't read on the page that it was uncombed and after I got 2 ounces...I went back to read. She offered me more in a different color, (I also didn't care for the cherry dark brown..ugh..but I didn't realy want anymore so I told her it was my fault, which it was big time. I just rememberd someone saying her name and that they got their mohair from her. I need to start reading past the price mark...lol

Really! that is nice of them to do that, but on the other hand, it is not you own work. I think that rooting a doll should be the "crown" of your labour.
It is my problem too, I just scan the page unitl I see the prize tag. I made that mistake once with mohair and I tell you it was a mess. You can still use the mohair but it is impossible to root from the cut end thus rooting one hair at a time.
I am staying in a mohair paradise. South Africa export 54% of the worlds mohair. I buy them in a raw state and wash and dye them myself. It is time consuming but well worth the efford.

Yes, Ronel, I believe all babies have at least one swirl on their heads. My granddaughter has 5 of them, and they are very close together and go in different directions. As she gets older she'll probably not like them because her hair stands up wildly in a couple places. Also... hair whorl (same thing as "swirl") was a characteristic that people would observe in identical twins. If one member of an identical twin set has a hair whorl that grows in the opposite direction as his/her twin, it might mean they are mirror image.
Anyway... yes, I think all babies have hair whorls.

You can get them right from Secist, they have different types and sizes. Check out their site, browse around, see what they have to offer. Secrist calls them single barb 43 guage needles. One thing though... you have to watch which needles you get depending on what handle you have/buy. The uncut go with the plastic mushroom handle and the cut go with the wooden handle. http://www.secristdolls.com/rooting_needles?b=1
