GentleMist, if this doll is a 1962 creation it is almost an antique, I would only clean it and if the hair is no good you could wig it or thake pieces of mohair, the length you require and glue ends together to fit in th holes and push them in through.  When something turns 50 yrs it is considered to be antique, and may be worth while keeping as is. Check to see if it is rare and what it would be worth as is. I personally would not do anything to it. Some old dolls can be sold for upwards of $10000 aus dollars.
