Some noses are just small or hard to open. Some don't open and some do. It's your decision. Some use a dremel tool. And some heat a small round needle file, just heating the end. Using certain kind of wax candle. Some will leave your tool sooty and transfer to the vinyl. I use a small set of drill bits. And graduate from small to bigger. I would would like to try the needle file method. I hear it leaves a nice smooth hole. Most will cover around the mouth and nose where you are working to protect it if you slip etc.. Good luck. I use a heated fine nose awl and gradually open the nose, you can angle it better too. I've tried using a round file but can't get rid of the little messy bits! I refill my ink cartridges for my printer at home as some ink kits have a very fine hand drill tool with them. I've tried one of these (with no ink on!) as they are really small. I prefer to use the nose awl, I've got the best result using that. hope this helps, Joanne

I always paint them with a dark blue paint, and it looks great.

I have always painted all my doll noses, if you use felt and you have silver fish, it eats it away. and beside why drill them out if you have to back them. After they have been painted, you can seal them with a sealer that looks moist. XXXX June.
I used to open the nostrils but usually don't any more. I never backed them with felt but did some shadowing in them before/after drilling. My weighting pellets never showed or came out the nose (lol). Now I just shadow the nostrils and it looks just fine. But as was said previous, it's all really personal preference. I think it's less work and looks more professional if you paint them (IMHO). Good luck with which ever way you decide to do it.
