I am having to become medically retired, and my wife, told the other day, that she was interested to making "Reborn Dolls".

She could not believe it, when I said, we could do it together. Our home is filled with dolls. And with all the money people spend, on doll, (not just her), but many, I believe, we could do great, making and selling these dolls.

I like to hear from others, how they are doing, as far as making a profit. Also, other guys who are making these dolls.

Hello and welcome. To answer your queston on profit making, it would depend on where and how yhou intend to sell them. Most people either have websites or sell on ebay. ebay in my opinion isn't a very stable source for selling.

There is a lot of competition on ebay and private websites. There are a lot of good artists out there. IMHO You will find that it may take a while before you make a doll that is worthy of selling.  It takes time to get the skin layers and mottling down. And then getting good at rooting the hair. I have made dolls and learned from each one. There is no one way that you do this. You have to find what works for you. And your best place to start is with a starter kit where they give you the tools and a kit. And go from there. The Secrist DVD, Painting with Genesis. Is where I started. It's step by step instructions. But, you may will vary from there with your own style and different techniques.  Doing local art shows or doll shows where there is probably not as much competition may be the best. Best of luck to you and your wife!

I can't figure out how you have that baby  hanging.   It looks like flowers and you say it's the lolipop sculpt?  That is sooooo cute.  I love it.  Is it hanging from the ceiling or what?

Welcome.  That would be a lot of fun to work as a couple.  I think it would depend to on artistic ability,  who you know and how much you know about showing the babies.  There has to be some photography skills.  You can learn a lot from just looking and watching.  When you have done a doll, take it out and see what kind of reaction you get.  See how many people are fooled by the baby.  When you get a good one, then I would visit some of the craft stores in the area and show your doll.  But, I think it takes a long time to get to the point where people recognize your name because of your works.  Personally I doubt if I ever get back what I have in it, but I love doing it and it's great therapy for sure. Someone told me to just remember it's about having fun.

Well, here is my opinion. Realistically, it takes a lot of money and time to make these babies. You usually have to put in an investment of about $200 for glues, brushes, paints, etc. . . Then each additional baby will cost between $100 and $200 to make in supplies alone (price depends on kit price and where you buy supplies from). This is not counting all the hours that go into each baby. It takes several babies that are unsellable to really get the hang of it and make a baby worth selling (and those first babies are plenty expensive too make, too). And even those first babies that you do sell usually don't go for much. You're doing good if you cover costs. Because of all these reasons, I would not consider reborning a steady income. However, it is a very fun and rewarding hobby. It would be a great project to work on together, just don't expect to make much from it. You will really enjoy it, I'm sure.

P.S. Reborning is addicting, so don't start unless you're sure you want to keep doing it, because you will end up continuing to do it whether you want to or not. :)

I agree it is a fun hobby and should not really be looked at anything but that, especially for newbies. It takes years to perfect your craft and you can invest hundreds if not thousands of dollars and not realize a good profit. Selling on ebay is a learning experience in itself, one in which you will also lose money until you learn to price, when to sell, what to sell and how to navigate such things as scammers and non paying bidders. Ebay alone can make you want to run screaming into the night! I do have a website and much prefer selling there but it has taken me years to get it up high in search engines and develop a following of customers. I get several questions like this a month from people who find my web site and want to know how to make money reborning. My advice is that it is a very competitive, sometimes downright hateful venue and don't get into it unless you have the money to lose for quite a while. I hate to sound like a wet blanket but too many people see the prices that some of the top sellers draw and they look at this as almost a "get rich quick" thing without knowing all the hard work, knowledge, time and expense that goes into it. So that is my two cents worth.
