Think I am trying to hard
Permalink

I would like a few opinions on a few things.
As the title says I think I am trying to hard.
I started on a doll that I intend to put on ebay to see how it goes.
All the dolls that I have made for myself or for friends and family have always looked fine to me but this one (and I think it is because I want to sell it) looked over worked.  I ended up taking off the last layer of paint before I baked it and it looks better.
I have a little trick I try, I get a baby sleepsuit and pop the head in.  I think you can get a better idea of how it will look when finished this way, it may sound silly but it works for me.  He looked fine.
Is it possible I am trying to hard or being to critical because I want to put him on ebay.
Also another thing I have a habit of doing is comparing the babies I am doing to ones I have made previously that are in my display cabinet all put together and posed in various different ways. Should I not do this?  I try to get the colouring exactly the same but should I just work on each baby as an individual just as real babies are?
Ant thoughts would be appreciated.

I think you're being critical of yourself. I'm sure he looks as beautiful as your other dolls. You don't have to make him look exactly like your other dolls, because like you said, they should be individuals like real babies. I'm sure your doll will look amazing once finished :]

I never try to make my babies look like each other. I just get what I get. If they look the same then fine but I don't push it. I think (IMHO) that you should just let it come out of you and flow down your brush (or sponge hehehe) and just make it for the sake of making it.

If I try to make something because I want to sell it, I get sooooo very critical of myself I just want to make it a bin-baby and be done with it. That takes all the fun out of it for me. So I say just relax and have a good time with painting your baby. If you get done and want to sell it on ebay decide then, not while you are creating!

Thank you both for your opinions.
I think you may be right, I think I am being to critical.
I stepped away for the time being and when I went back to him this morning I can see things in a different light, especially after reading your comments, LOL.
I am going to stop comparing my babies to finished ones (my new rule).
Thanks again.

I look at my babies this way, if I like the way they look and I put them on ebay and they don't sell it's another one for my collection. But usually there is someone up there guiding you, even though you may not know it. Sunflower is lovely and if I can sell a Berenguar even though it wasn't a high price, then all you ladies can do the same. He was only my second baby. It has helped me purchase more kits, so give it a go.

I only do this as a hobby but I wouldn't be happy selling them or trying to sell them if I don't feel that it is a baby I would be happy to receive, I think that is why I was being so picky. I have actually finished the painting now, well, all except the final matte varnish layer and I am now very happy with it.
I don't expect to get a fortune for my babies when I try selling them but I am just hoping to get something so that, like you, it helps pay for more kits to keep my hobby going.
It's funny too as when I started painting this baby I was certain it was going to be a girl but now I am finished it is definately a boys face.
I am going to have to stop this pre-planning and just learn to go with the flow, LOL.

Karen,
Every baby I have done looks different. I always wait until they are done to name them because it seems they all have their own personality! If you want to put it on ebay, go ahead. I have had a couple babys I put on ebay several times and they didn't sell and then finally they did (I sold one a year after I made it). Anyway, my point is, is that every baby sells eventually, there is always one person looking for that special baby. Each baby is a personal art project, so don't stress, just enjoy it. janet

Thanks for the advice Janet, I have totally chilled out about the whole thing now after all the comments made by everyone.
I am just going to get him all finished and see how he goes.

I have just encountered a new problem with this baby.
I have finished all the painting and done the matte varnish layer and the colouring and skin looks really good to me now.
I started rooting today and I have just done the swirl of the crown for now.
When I looked inside the head to make sure the hair was going in far enough I have seen a large crack in the vinyl going downwards behind the right ear. It doesn't go right through to the outside but I am worried that if I don't give it a little attention it may split all the way through.
I was wondering if a covering of E6000 would help but I am not sure whether to do this before or after rooting. If I do it before rooting will it make the hair in that area hard to root?
I'm also worried that if I leave it until after that pushing the needle in and out of that area may weaken it more.
I will leave it now until hopefully somebody can answer my questions (and sorry there has been so many about this baby).
Thanks everyone.

I would do the glue now, before any rooting in that area. You are right! If you root any there it may split farther. No, I don't think it will be unusually difficult to root through the E6000 since it is silicone. Might be a little harder to get the needle in but at least your hair will stay put!! :o And you don't want to run the risk of it splitting any farther. Be sure to use a rice sock for rooting that one. It will soften the vinyl to make it more pliable. Make sure the glue cures for at least 24 to 48 hours before you do any rooting.

I glued the cracks with E6000 and I can feel that it has strengthtned the head up nicely in those areas.
