I have the Ultra Micro-Root needles from BB, size 36. They don't break much, but they leave holes in the head, no matter whether they caught any hair or not. And they catch way to much hair for my taste, even thought they've only 3 barbs. They rarely catch only 3 hairs. Anyone know why this might be? And tell me what needles work best, and why? I've checked the other topics on this, so I know about the crown rooting needles and the German barbless needle. But I thought I had gotten good needles, so I'm dissapointed (and I bought 2 dozen of them, too). Naomi, how do the German barbless needles work if they haven't any barbs? Any tips as to what I might be doing wrong and what needles I should get would be great. Oh, and does anyone know how to fix the holes that I have in the head of my poor little baby?

Hi Andrea, I have read on this forum somewhere?? that to fix holes in the head ...take a pan of Boiling Water and hold head in for 20-30seconds, then plunge into ice cold water straight away.... I haven`t as yet had to try it ..but I would give it a go if I had to.... I Have tried the German rooting needles and I don`t like them...they left holes in my heads and no hair!!! I`ve tried them on soft head and harder head... ..I am still trying to figure out the best needle !!
Thanks nateka. I just may try it. I'm just worried that it might mess up the mohair, melt the sealer glue, or damage the Genesis paints I used. Someone who has done it, can you tell me if it worked, or if it might mess something up? Thanks.

That technique will not harm the mohair, but you MUST make sure it is colorfast!!!! It will weaken the glue (or start it to come loose inside the head). It will not cause any problems with the Genesis if they have been totally baked/cured properly.
I have done this method many times and it does work but may not shrink all your holes or get rid of the dark marks left by some needles. All needles leave holes in the head when rooting, but some are more noticable, especially if you are using darker hair. Sometimes the needles leave a dark ring around the insertion hole. The 36 and 38 guage needles naturally leave a larger hole in the vinyl as they are larger needles than say a 40 or 42 guage needle.
I've been reborning for five years and find that the best needle is 40g Crown. If you're using the 'stab through the mohair' method of rooting, you will get more than 3 hairs with one 'stab' with the 36g. Try holding less mohair on the head. A half inch thick piece is more than enough.
