i know its just a horrid term isn't it... however does it have the same connotation in the US as it does her in australia?? I mean you hear in movies and read in books about "rooting" for their fave sports team and such...

so you US gals (and those from other countries for that matter)... does "rooting" have a *ahmm* sexual double meaning? or is this an aussie slang/cultural thing???

No I have never heard rooting used as a sexual term. It is used for rooting for your team, like you said, and some animals root around in the ground and then there is rooting of plants. Oh and one more rooty toot toot, but I don't really know what that is in reference too. Since there are so many Aussie's selling and buying these babies, maybe we should think of another name. How about transplanting mohair, how does that sound? You girls are so bad!!!! LOL. Janie in the USA

*giggles* we are a naughty little bunch *hehee*

i think i said in another thead about my family making fun of me "rooting all day" etc... that you meantioned rooting in bed ... well ... giggles

i had a feeling though that the US members etc might not know why we find the term so *urm* susspect - given that you "root" for your fave sports teams and what not.

here is aust, its actually a very tacky/cringe-worthy term used to referr to things of an "intimate nature"!!! Of course we do still know of its actual meaning in reference to plant roots, hair roots etc.

But yeah one is alway careful how things are worded regarding me finishing the rooting of hair into one of my babies heads... of course this is what my family delight in voicing a little bit more loudly and without clarification when out in the yard!!! they are evil!!! LOL

hello All, now I,m back on the post tonight and I must take the blame for starting this off,Telling Naomi I was out to tea, and my husband used to tell everyone we were going home to make babies and they looked at us funny. But I couldn't come out and say the root... word,How would they understand ,two old fogies doing that at our age. Unheard of. Our kids think we only did it 5-6 times to get them. Untill they started rootin arround, I think we should use the term, transplanting hair. hows that sound. Not the same when we know the other term.weirdfaceJune M from Oz

Guess what my Dad did, he put 100s and 1000s on the wood heap and told us to go pick them up, then he put vaseline on the door nobs so our little hand would slip, this was when he came home from the army. That was our big treat.LOLweirdfaceJune M from Oz.

Oh gosh, call me naive, but I never knew rooting meant *that!* LOL

Here in the States, I think *rooting* most often is used for the word "nursing." It's when a brand new baby is "looking" for his momma's milk. see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooting_instinct
I think this reference to the word rooting is used far more often than say, "rooting for your team," although we do say that, too. This type of "rooting for your team" is also called "cheering," Hence, the term "cheerleaders." smile.gif

Another more common terminology for "rooting" is when you are propogating plants (instead of using seeds; you take a portion of the plant and try to grow roots). As you can see, here in the U.S. "rooting" means many varied things, but none of them sexual (I think... except for propogating plants, smile.gif). see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooting

Hello Your Royal Highness, That was the term I was thinking about also last night,Propogating, to plant a cutting to get roots to grow. Transplanting also means to transplant a cutting, as well as hair transplant. But if we all spelt how the word sounded, we would have a lot of children unable to use the dictionary, the same as I have to do at my age.LOL.weirdfaceJune M from Oz

I remember when I first met my British mother in law, she came out for our college graduation and then took us on a grand across country vacation. I remember we stopped at a motel for the night and she took one room and my husband and I got the room next door. We discussed plans for the next day and then she turned and said, "okay, I'll knock you up about 7." I know the look on my face must have been awful because my husband started to laugh and my mother in law looked confused. My husband took me inside and explained that term meant she would come and knock on our door in the morning to wake us up. (In America that term means to get someone pregnant!) To this day I still haven't figured out if a biscuit is a cookie, then what is a what we call a biscuit in America. I asked my mum in law that and she looked at me as though I had lost my mind. I still don't have an answer to that question!

LOL funny!!!! Knock you up... gee she must have been really keen for grandchildren LOL

Yeah what we call a biscuit is a cookie but i have no idea what the thing is that you call a biscuit - i don't think we have them... like i know a few americans that live here is aust and they said you can get something called a biscuit in Mcdonnalds on the breakfast menu that sounds somewhat like an engish muffin... but apparently you have english muffins too so what ever the thing is you call a biscuit i just think we don't have at all so we don't have a name for it!!!

termonology is funny when it gets mixed cross culter... even when both cultures speak english.

A biscuit here is round and raised and some are big enough to put some meat in them, probably what you are thinking of with McDonalds, but those look entirely different from our English Muffins. The EM are flat and round and have more of a yeast taste to them and they are filled with little holes from air bubbles so I am guessing they are yeast based. Biscuits are just flour, water, salt and a little baking powder and that's it. Our older generation in America as well as some southern states, are especially keen on biscuits and gravy, quite good but quit fattening!
I have learned that American English is not the same as the "Queen's English" as my mother in law would say. My father in law is Scottish, I gave up on understanding him a long time ago as when he gets excited or talks fast, I get completely lost in what he is saying.

Well I'm glad you like the term YOUR ROYAL HIGHNESS, I think it suits you.You know you could be called by anyother slang term we use here in Oz and you probabily wouldn't understand it either. But honestly I like the first one I gave you, don't you. But I realy am sick today, I,ve felt like chucking up all night, so that is why I'm on the comp. this early. Your Royal Highness.weirdfaceJune M from Oz
