I was just wondering how many on here actually make a profit off their dolls? I guess I am assuming that what you sell your dolls for just covers the cost of making the doll and then the rest of the money made is in turn reinvested into more doll kits and supplies? Is that how it goes, or do some of you guys actually make a profit from your dolls? Just curious :)

its taken a while - but i do actually make a profit now with my babies. I've finally had some going for $500- $600 my average is probably about $350-$400 each baby though.

I have only the one on ebay at present and he's really not getting any attention which is dissapointing. But i'm stock-piling at the moment as i have a show/exhibit that i'm doing at the Perth craft, quilt and stitch show on Aug 1, 2 & 3. I now have 18 babies finished for it which will all be for sale there, i'll also be showing the babies i've done for my mother (she has 5 now) and also have a big album done up of my other work as order examples. I've still got a couple more suclpt to work, all up (inclding my mother 5) i'm planning for about 30 babies to have for show and sale, I'm hoping to bring in a good profit.

I'm the only exhibitor that will be there at this show with the reborn dolls and the show organisers have bent over backwards for me. They had someone with reborns there a few years back and have had request ever since. They tell me that the woman sold out and had many orders placed when she was there. I'm actually about the only person in all of Western Australia doing them - i've only come across only one other person here in WA. So i really will have the manopoly with no other competition at this fair. They have even featured me in the show advertisment so i'm really excited about this being a big brake for me in building my name and reputation further.

I've only been reborning now 7 months, but i've been doing it full time since March. I've already won a first place in the only comp that i've entered, as well as having had the honour of doing a proto-type.

It does take time to build a name for yourself before you start actually making profit but it does happen. I have big dreams for the future and plan on really throwing myself into sculpting after the show.

Naomi, Just a thought , seeing you have so many dolls made and have been able to take such wonderful photo,s of them, Why dont you do a step by step in the processing and send it to The Austraian Dolls Bears and Collectable,s and get you name out there. You can also put your name in the back of the mag. To have your details listed in the web& email Directory contact Simmon Mullen. Ph. 0247338482 and tell them about the show.. adcopy@woodlandspublishing.com.au I think you have to type this in.weirdfaceJune

wow -- funny i just came back into my room to grab my camera, about to start work on "sparow" and was thinking i'd take photos step-by-step to show the process in visuals at the show.

So since i was about to do this anyway i'll have a look into the magazine also.

I don't make much money on my dolls. I usually get between $125 and $250 for a doll, depending on the doll. I have been reborning for about three years now, but I don't get much chance to do them because of my job and my health problems. Naomi has probably made twice as many dolls in seven months as I have made in three years. I think she is right that you need to spend time advertising and making a name for yourself if you want to make a profit doing this.

your right heather b/c i'm doing this all the time EVERYDAY 14-16hrs a day, I've definetly made many, many more than most would over the course of just seven months.

Also part of make a name for yourself is simply by constantly haveing babies listed for sale on ebay. the more time between your listings means that your name isn't going to constantly be out there and people forget you - but if you'r able to continually offer babies, then collectors are going to be faced with your name/nursery and start to keep track, notice and eventually look out for you.

I'm making progress with my sales but i am not yet in a huge demand - i have do have a number of return customers, but my babies still are not sort out to the extent that some other artisits are.

The biggest thing is perserverance and not getting too down when a baby doesn't sell as well as other ppls are, or as well as one of your own previous sales, and esp when ones doesn't sell at all.

I'm hopelessly obsessed though, to a dangerous degree - i have no idea what to do with myself on occasions when i've run out of sculpts and waiting for more deliverys. And i have to force myself not to speed when out and about, b/c all i want is to get back home as quickly as possible so i can get back to work.

i think i've passed obsession and adiction and entered the grounds of compulsion when it comes to these babies.

LOL I think reborning is a good obsession and one I share. If my job didn't interfere so much, I probably wouldn't do much else either. Unfortunately, my students take up quite a bit of my time. I actually have far more sculpts than time to do them, but I tend to buy the less expensive sculpts because I know that I am unlikely to get top dollar since I only sell on the Internet and I don't have that many to list. But I think that the Berenguer babies are pretty cute and the Secrist babies, though a bit more expensive are much easier to work with. Though I would like to try some of the more expensive kits, I worry about spending more than I make.

But I do love reborning and I find it therapeutic.
