I had a little giggle this morning when i saw on one of our (australian) morning shows about the mistaken rescue of a reborn baby from a car.... they quote Vynett in the article but they don't actually say if she was the artist behind this baby's creation... would love to know who's work it was and what sculpt etc
Panicked police officers were forced to smash the window of a car in Queensland last week to save what they thought was an unconscious baby.
But the heroic deed, which took place in regional Gympie, became an embarrassing blunder when the baby rescued from the car turned out to be an uncannily lifelike doll, the Courier Mail reports.
The doll is believed to have been a "baby reborn" design, an increasingly popular type of doll manufactured to look like a genuine baby.
Gympie Sen-Sgt Phil Edwards told the newspaper the incident had been frightening for both police and members of the public who had really believed a baby was dying.
"It was incredibly lifelike," he said, adding that when the owners of the car were eventually tracked down they were "nonplussed and apologetic".
Vynette Cernik, a creator of baby reborn dolls, said the lifelike figures are often mistaken for the real thing.
A similar incident had occurred in the US when police smashed the window of a Hummer to rescue a "baby" that turned out to be a doll belonging to the owner's wife, she told the Courier Mail.
"People do have to be careful when they go out with themI tell them to hold them properly, not dangle them by one leg or something, because other people do think they are real babies and become alarmed," she said.
Baby reborn dolls can sell for up to $1000 and are usually painstakingly hand-painted with real hair and eyelashes.
"They're even weighted to feel like a baby's weight and they flop like a baby," Ms Cernik said.
OH those poor people, all the way around. What a way to get publicity! I have had the police called on me 2 times (and for the Apple Valley dolls, which are not as lifelike), and also campus security (at my college) who tried to convince the woman that they knew me, I make dolls, and that was a reborn doll! They knew because I worked for them for 3 years and brought in many babies for them to see.
Of course the woman would have had to make her face one with the glass window (face smooshed in till it was flat) of my vehicle as the only remote peice showing was 1" of the basket the doll was in. And I had everything covered up. I even had stuff on the top of the covered up basket.
I now have one of those bright yellow diamond shaped signs that says: Its a doll, not a baby... doll maker on board! and it hangs in my window!!!!
People are strange sometimes. Good thing they look, but they should LOOK! before they call someone.
i couldn't help but giggle though... i mean it would have been frightening for ppl not in the know (that it was a doll) but i can't help but find it all quite cute!!!
the owners of the car with the smashed window weren't mad and neither were the poliece so really i find it all a bit of a giggle.
its in queensland so my gues is it is vynette from vynettes bassinet im pretty sure she is in gympie hehe must admit i had to have a giggle reborning isnt as popular in aussie as it is in UK and USA so for some ppl this is all a very new expirience I was almost arrested once for carrying a newborn baby in a bag around the shopping centre mistreatment of a minor they call it I had two security guards excourt me to main office and sat there and showed them my latest reborn hehehe I got a few customs from that day :)

no, not many ppl do know about reborns here is Aust do they. Though there have been a few stories i've seen lately but i think this one has been the biggest nation wide expose on what reborns are, or that such life like babies exsist.
TinyEA- oops!! i have had a few ppl look twice when i've been at the post office and suddenly put my baby in a box for postage!!! lol The ladies that work there often ask to see what baby i'm sending off this time that i don't seal the boxes closed till they've had a look-see.
Ya, when you look back at it, it really is something to chuckle about. Silly really.
I got yelled at in walmart because some woman got her knickers in a twist over the fact that I had some "babies" in my car, still not even the reborns, just some Apple Valleys (2 large toddler Chris--toothy grins and even a large pricetag on them). She even went so far as to bring the greeting guy (says hello when you walk in the store). So the police were called and they both got yelled at by the cop. After he went away, they both started yelling at me and swearing & being very vulgar at me. So I told them "what do you do, go around peeping in peoples cars to see if some little girl left her baby doll in there?" "Did you call the cops on any poor little kids?" So their response was for me to cover my dolls! To which I told them to... well, it's a family forum people so I dare not say what I told them. They walked back into the store, still yelling at me. I saw the guy after that and when he came toward me I held up my hand in a "stop" motion and told him to get away from me.
Of course here in the US it makes things hard as we have had at least 2 infant/toddler deaths caused by people leaving them in the vehicle and NO ONE calling the police! One mother "forgot" her 6 month old was in the carseat in back of her and went to work. Left the baby there for 8 hours in the heat! Went to the daycare and said I'm here to pick up my baby. Well, they found the baby dead in the back seat still in her carseat. Now HOW can you be sooooo busy that you don't know you didn't drop the kid off at the sitter? And where were all those nosey people that call on our dolls hmmmm? You'd think someone would call! Then there was the dad that got his kid still in the carseat, put him in the back of the van, then left him there for about 6-8 hours and "forgot" he was back there. Baby again died. And not one person called the cops! Neither one of them did any time for their babies dying, cause "they were already in enough pain". Excuse me??? OHhhhhh it's a double edged sword!
But with me, even when I cover them all up so you can't see them, someone calls someone on me! lol funny creatures us humans!
I had a similar, but more plesant, experience a few months ago. One of the office workers in the English dept. at college was showing one of my babies to a few people when she spotted one of our elder statesmen of the dept. chatting with a young professor, smoking his pipe. When she approached with the baby the old dear took one look and quickly dumped out his pipe and then asked her why the baby didn't have a heavier blanket. It took a minute or two for him and the young professor to realize that the baby was a reborn and not a newborn.

I had a doll in a meeting at school and the presenter saw him and started talking quietly! LOL. I don't think he believed it was a doll until he touched it, even though it is my yawning baby!
I have had some problems with this too. When I am carrying one of my dolls, people get on my case for not carrying it right. My family has already warned me about leaving them in cars, but so far it hasn't been a problem. There aren't many people where I live and people don't generally nose around other people's vehicles.
I had to laugh at this, as I was in queensland when it happened AND I picked up a doll for the first time (borrowed from a friend)... it was a bit funny! I just laughed about it...

Wow what a story! Although I don't think reborns are all that well-known here in the US either (at least not in Washington State)! I've had two experiences just recently... I just went to visit my little sis in Spokane, WA (about an hours flight from Seattle), and was carrying my newest baby Ariella. When I had to go through Security, my husband who was not going with me was watching me go down the line & said I better put my reborn in the plastic tub with my purse and shoes, and so I did! The lady behind me said she nearly had a heart attack as it went onto the belt and through the x-ray! She had never seen a reborn!
And the week before... I left my twins(in my avatar) in the car as I went into the grocery store (just blocks from my house). I had a bit of shopping to do so I was in there about 20 minutes when I heard over the loudspeaker "will the owner of a 1997 Subaru outback pls come to the cust. service desk". When I got there, there were two agents from Child protective services there... They had a cop outside using something to unlock my car thinking I'd left real babies in the car. Didn't make the news I'm glad to say, but they were really really upset with me all round! I won't be doing that again any time soon (lol)!
