Hair that is plugged
Permalink

Can anyone tell me if you can use the secrist mohair to repair hair on a doll that has been pluged?   I have a friend that has a very old doll.  she needs
to put hair on it, but the original hair was put in by plugs.  If  I can't use the
mohair from secrist, could you please tell me what would be the best way to
fix the hair on this doll?  I am very new to newborning and reborning so I hope
someone may be able to help with this problem.
Thank You so very much for your help.
I do appreciate it more than you know.

You pretty much have to use a wig for a doll like that.

I have an old doll from when I was a child and she also has plugged hair. I would have love to been able to use her plugs but in her case I couldn't even get rid of all her hair!

If you look inside of commercially made play dolls, you should see stitching holding the hair in the holes. This is because they use a special hair sewing machine and actually "sew" the hair into the head. If you cut the hair short on the outside of the head you should be able to go inside and pull or cut the threads and remove most of it. Sometimes I use sticky tape, balled up on a pencil or paint brush to help pull it out of there. Once that is done, wash the head inside and let it dry for a day or 2. Use something small to poke the stubborn hairs out of the holes and remove.

I took a friends handmade clown doll (actually it was her moms who was in a nursing home) and all it's hair fell out, I mean it just disintigrated in my hand! So I washed and scrubbed all the old hair out of it (inside and out). I then used a 34 or 36 guage 6 barb needle to root some mohair. It was difficult and time consuming as it kept wanting to come out with the needle. So I held my finger over the hole when I removed the needle. After I got it rooted I put a thick layer of glue in the head to secure it. IT WORKED GREAT!!

Thing of it was... her mom was old and dying and it was a favorite doll. My friend used to raise angora goats so that is the hair I used, from her goats. She cried when she saw that it worked and when she gave it to her mom (on her birthday) her mom cried cause she had thrown the doll away, thinking nothing could be done with it. She was sooooo happy to have it like new again (and with hair from her daughters goats which she loved)! She had no idea that her daughter had taken it out of the trash bin and had it repaired.

See! It never hurts to "try" something, so I say GO FOR IT!!!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

Your help means more than you know.  I was worried that it was a lost cause to try to root the hair in.  Now I can hopefully do it!  I am very very new to this so please keep me in your prayers as I jump into this
and give it a try.

I guess if it don't work I can always use a wig and that makes me feel
better.

Thanks so much for all the help.

Hmmmm. to my knowledge the only dolls with hair glued on the inside are done by individuals, not companies. Hmmmm, strange

With that one, to remove the hair (and glue) you can put really hot water inside the head, wait a minute or two, then pour out and use something inside to try to loosen the glue and pull it out. The hair should come out with the glue. If it doesn't, you can cut it short and try again.

She is a "Christy" doll from the 70's. I believe she was done by Vogue.
