Taking Paint off a doll
Permalink

Hi,
I am new to reborning and have a question.  I have gotten some dolls on Ebay that were store-bought dolls and they have factory paint on the faces.  I was thinking of using wigs to solve the hair problem--I don't want to get into getting the sculpted hair lines off the doll like they show in the videos.  It's just not something I want to work on.  But my real question is, is there anything that I can use to remove the factory paint from the face and limbs, other than ordering it from a dealer??  I was looking at Goo Gone Extreme, but I don't want to compromise the vinyl of the doll.  I would love any suggestions I can get.  Thanks,  Tami K

I used goof-off on the the two true reborns I did and the one enhanced doll (see my avatar). I also used it after heat setting a sculpt and not being happy with the painting. I tried the goo be gone but it didn't work for me. BE VERY CAREFUL with the goof-off. Make sure you are outside with plenty of ventilation! Read all the instructions/warnings, etc.

I agree with the wigging because I didn't on my reborns and I broke a ton of needles and their hair still looked terrible (partially my experience, partially the poor-quality of my mohair).

Goof-Off is a very nasty chemical and I agree... if you use it do so outside. Wash your parts immediately in hot detergent water to remove all the stuff. It does leave behind a residue. It also is carsinogenic and can cause nerve damage in the extremities (I know from personal experience) amongst other things. Google it and read the MSDS sheet on it. It is used as an automotive and aircraft parts solvent!

I have used nail salon acetone (at least this can be used on humans) but don't rub it. Just wet a cotton ball and go in small strokes. If you rub you may ruin the protective coating on the doll and the paint may not adhere.

Tami K & Loves Dolls, In Australia you can buy 750 ml bottle of Acetone from the hardware. It also has safty Directions, When I fist started in Oct last year thats what the teacher used and it works well. You can use a tooth brush to get into crevises. As for rooting the hair on the shop bought dolls here ,we use rice and heat it in the microwave for three minutes to soften the harder vynal. You can put a cup full in a cotton sock,or a knee high stocking, I prefere the cotton, or make a thin bag from a old tee shirt, make it loose so you can get it through the neck hole, when it starts going cold you need to reheat it or you will break your needles.weirdfaceJune M from Oz
