I have just reborn two 17 inch dolls (my first dolls ever) and I am not at all happy with the mohair (bought the cheapest at first)or the look I got. Yes the mohair has been glued in with Aleen's tacky glue. Is it possible to totally remove all the mohair from the heads? Maybe re-root the hair again? Has anyone tried that? Hair is the hardest for me to get down to a nice baby whispy look. I am buying the Premium mohair now and have all the Secrist beginner paints and Beginners CD, the hair detangler. I do also have the 38 crowning needles. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks
I wouldn't redo. You should be able to use a solvent to remove the glue from the inside of the head. The reason I wouldn't is because if you are going for a wispy look it is going to be hard to cover the spots made from the needles. I would use a cute little hat to cover what you got and learn (like I did) that you get what you pay for when it comes to mohair. JMHO!
Thanks for the reply. Okay I will leave the dolls alone. Learn and Live HuH? I ordered another kit and will be careful this time. Also ordered a rooting CD and the best mohair. lol I love doing these dolls. I will eventually get it right. Thanks again.
You are quite welcome. You should find that you got through a lot less of the high quality mohair than the cheaper mohair. So an ounce will last longer.
I agree with Loves. Redoing isn't a great idea. Just make sure you use worthwhile mohair in the future--or try alpaca; it's even softer and frequently nicer.
If you want a sparce look without removing all your rooting work, remove the glue from inside the head. Next, if there is more than 1 or 2 hairs in a hole, take a tweezer and remove the ones that are extra. Just grab them with a pointed tweezer and carefully pull them out. That should give you more of a look like you want.
Then... As far as the price of the mohair meaning good or bad, that is not entirely true! I know several forums where the reborners said they paid over $50 and it was terrible mohair. Problem is most people who sell hair are not willing to give a refund or even attempt to take back what someone deams as bad mohair. It's mostly a live and learn deal.
Another factor depends on the number of the cut and age of the goat. Some people do shearing many times a year instead of just a couple. Mohair gets coarser the older the goat and the more shearings. It will probably be end of June or mid July before our ultra premium mohair becomes available but I have a sample and it is the best out there (IMHO). But get good pics, ask for more, some closeups, ask how it's dyed, cleaned, etc. then make your decision from there!
