ROOTING HAIR HUMAN OR TRYING NEW THINGS
Permalink

Hi

I am new to reborning and working on third doll a Toddler and every doll I'm trying to use different  techniques and new things I want to learn and this next doll was a second toddler and it is for my daughter and debating on trying human hair and I did search on forum and got alot of useful hints on needles and tricks however my question is how long do you buy human hair and what do you look for when buying it?  I want the hair to be shoulder length and I am learning and have not done a wig yet either.  I have only worked with mohair so far.  I want to try all the different types so I can learn and see how each type works and on this doll it is for my daughter soo I really don't want to spend a fortune what do you recommend for my next hair type experiment?  I don't mind if it takes a long time I am going to try every kind of hair sooner or later.   If a wig has a braid can you take the braid out and restyle hair?  Thank you  Jackie

Hi JJ welcome to the forum family, I tried human hair on a practice doll when I first started reborning I did'nt like it, it was  bone straight it just did'nt look good for a newborn I used the shortest length that Sally Beauty supply had, it may look better on a older baby, at that time I found  it hard to work with, let me know how it works out for you.

Hi Jackie. Sounds like you have a plan there hun. That is probably what I would have done. I do remember ordering about 5 sizes of needles and breaking my way through almost all of them hahaha. Still have a few left of the old ones. Let us know how you get on with the human hair or if you decided to wig!

Hi Jackie

I have been reborning for over 7 years and have used human hair. Due to the coarseness/thickness, it is best used for your toddlers. Yaki hair is good, but Indian hair is a little finer. Rooting with a 38g crown is best. The higher the guage the finer the needle and the easier they break. Pack of hair will do about 3 or 4 heads depending on the length you make your baby's hair. Depending how thick you want it is how close you root each hair. Length for shoulder length cut 6 - 7 inches. Hope that helps you!!

Thank you soo much.  Please explain crown needle?  I have used fine needles and I learned the hard way they all broke.  I actually am done rooting the hair maybe need some touch-up couple bald spots and I ended up finishing with a 38 needle with 1 barb I'm not sure if that what crown means?  Thank you Jackie

I wanted to thank you all for your help and appreciate and just learned a secret from someone a aunt of mine who does sewing stuff.  To get needle to slide into vinyl easier use a bar of soap I took a wet bar of soap from bathtub and kept by me when rooting and would poke needle in soap when combing hair or stuck in bar of soap every now and then and yes the needle went in very easy and I still use rice socks.  I found it to work great!!!

That sounds like a great "secret" Jackie! Thanks for sharing that with us. :D
Glad you are still using the rice sock, that has helped me the most.

As far as a "crown needle" you may have to do a search in our forum at the top of the page. just type in crown needle and it should bring up any thread that has information. If that doesn't work, then you may have to contact Stephanie Sulllivan at Hunnybuns nursery as I know she sells them.
