I dont know if this a common thing but I couldn't find anyone else asking about it..
I baked my first set of limbs for a 5" baby.
I was using super sculpey and my oven was set to the right temp and I think I put it in for the right time.
When they came out they had streaks all over them.
Is this normal? Did I do something wrong? How do I not have it happen again?
Thanks in advance

I don't think it's happened to me yet but what was the first thing you did with the limbs? Did you wash them? I can't think of anything that would cause them to leave streaks on them!...hmmmm

what is super sculpey? I don't think I heard of it.. but could that be what is causing your limbs to streak? Just a thought...

Hi Michelle,
I haven't tried sculpting myself yet but have read quite a bit on it and I seem to recall reading somewhere that streaks are a common problem with polymer clays The streaks you see in your clay (before and after baking) are the result of air pockets. I think anyway ;) Like I said I have tried it myself yet just educating myself first. Anyway there are few wonderful scultors on here that will be able to answer your question through experience.

Thanks for trying Tina. And those are "moonies" being the little pockets of air hun hehehe that was great! You are so cute.

The streaks can be caused by a few things...
Putting your clay through the pasta machine too many times
Using two different color batches of clay
But mostly dirt/dust...
Even when we think our hands and equipment are clean, our hands can still make our clay dirty by pulling the embeded dirt and oils out of our finger prints. Take some cheap babywipes and wipe your hands on them lots, especially in between modeling your clay. Or have a bit of clay and just roll it and squeeze it in your hands and only keep that bit for taking the dirt out of your hands and nails. You'll be amazed at how dirty that bit will become.

Now Secrist has "clay paint" so you can just paint right over those streaks and moonies.

Hope this helps hun. :)

Ha ha ha, Tina, Half right, you mean half left don't you? I can't comment on this one as I have only sculpted with clay, where you can use water and hand creams. I would love to give it ago one day. I did a class over here about a month ago making nomads out of fabric and some type of glue, we didn't get half enough fabric or glue to finish the project and no tuition. Just left to copy. I was so upset with mine, it is out in the shed. It is supposed to go in the Garden. OH WELL LOL> my expence. PS Pat did you get the Qld Paper I sent you. XXXXXXX June.

Yes I absoulutly did June! IT WAS SIMPLY SPLENDID! I was over the moon with your part of the interview! My husband was impressed... first with the fact that "I" got mail from Australia, second that I knew someone that was interviewed in a magazine. :)

I was looking for somewhere to post this comment and thought I might put it in misc chatter if I couldn't find you posting about it, and here you are!
Thank you so much hun! Can I keep it or do you want it back? I see someone drew on the back page hehehe.

No , You can keep it. I bought 12 papers, they where realy thick and that bit was in the centre of it. I thought they could have used pictures of everyone they interviewed though. But to get a mention, that was great. I'm off to judge reborns on the 16th of this month, so I hope I don't get booed. I have done so little lately, all we seem to be doing is going to hospitals again for Sam. He has to have more surgery to the roof of his mouth and all his top teeth taken out as there is another cyst or something, the same as he had removed in Nov last year, it has spread into the roof and they can't understand how. After that surgery, when it heals, a month later he has to have his nose broken and reset so I hope everything goes alright for him. I have lost interest in doing anytype of craft or doll making as I can't settle myself enough. The girl that is doing porcelain dolls with me is working full time for 2-3 mths. XXXXXX June.

WOW! 12? You sound like me. hehehe
When I graduated this past May we got booklettes with all the graduates in it and what award they got. So I walked around and picked up 10 more just because. Good thing I did as some people didn't go and wanted one.

Sorry to hear about Sam and more surgery. You two have quite the medical adventure. I'm praying that they get everything this time hun!

You'll get back to the dolls as soon as you are able. Keep the faith kiddo! I am :)

Try to leave a product in an oven before full cooling, try not to open a door once again. Sometimes it helps.

That's what I used to do too. I took them (heads) out when they were still fairly warm. They were ok but then about a week to 2 weeks later, I noticed a crack in the head on 1 and on the other one, the chin fell off at the mouth! I cried.
So now I wait till they have totally cooled off before removing them

With the new clay paint, probably a silly question but does it require baking? I just don't want to overbake! :/ also, how long do you bake a sculpt that has been painted by genesis? :)

Ok, I believe the clay paints are still Genesis heat set so yes you have to bake them to cure them. As far as baking on clay... hmmm... I know that with the clay you have to bake a certain time at temp per 1/4" or something like that for the clay to be cured... so if you paint it before you bake to cure the clay, you should be able to bake it at the clay temp and time. I believe there is a thread or 2 in forum here on baking clay and paint. Try using the search feature. :D

I have looked for the posts, but I can't find them it might be me not looking hard enough!

I have already cured my clay, so does that shorten the time for paint curing?

The paint curing always has to be the same hun. Even if we have already baked our clay, the paint is like another layer of clay and it won't be permanent till its done at the full time and temp. Let us know how it goes.
